Romney Tells Touching Story of Navy SEAL Slain in Benghazi

Yesterday in blustery Iowa, Mitt Romney touchingly recalled a chance meeting of someone whose name has recently been in the news…

Self-deprecatingly, the Governor told of an incident regarding a humorous neighborhood Christmas party mix-up in 2010. Before that night was over, Romney would meet a memorable young man from his home state of Massachusetts. As he continued to tell the story he became somber, voice wavering, and he choked up as he revealed the identity of the man.

Who did he meet that made such an impression on him?

Glenn Doherty.

On Sept 11th of this year, when terrorists ambushed our consulate in Benghazi, Libya and Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed, former Navy SEAL Doherty was also murdered:

CNN:

“We had a lot of things in common,” Romney said of Doherty, recalling the two had skied at some of the same places, and that when they met Doherty had discussed his care and concern for people he had met working in the Middle East. “You can imagine how I felt when I found out that he was one of the two former Navy SEALs killed in Benghazi on Sept. 11th.”

Romney only recently learned for certain that Doherty was the same man he had met at a party in La Jolla, California, a campaign spokesman said.

Reminiscing on a windy Tuesday in Iowa, Romney cited reports on CNN International that Doherty had left a safe location to rush to the aid of the consulate under attack last month.

They didn’t hunker down where they were in safety – they rushed there to go help,” Romney said, tying that spirit to his candidacy. “This is the American way – we go where there’s trouble. We go where we’re needed. And right now we’re needed.”

The killings in Benghazi were horrific and tragic…

A decorated veteran, Doherty served in the SEALS for nine years which included multiple combat deployments. His sister, Katie Quigley, said of her brother, “He was really good at what he did. He was a sniper. When he was in the field, his main mission was intelligence gathering. He served in Iraq when the palaces came down after the capture of Saddam Hussein.” Doherty also served in Afghanistan. He left for Libya on Sept 5th.

At the time of Doherty’s death, he was contracted by the State department to provide security for the consular staff. He leaves behind his wife, Heather Doherty, and two children.

The Obama Administration scandal, in what some are now calling Libya-Gate, continues to unfold. It will surely be discussed at the next presidential debate on October 16th in Hempstead, New York, where foreign policy will be a topic.

UPDATE – Due a complaint by Barbara Doherty, Glenn Doherty’s mother, the Romney campaign announced Governor Romney will no longer mention the time he met Glenn.

Ms. Doherty’s comments:

“I don’t trust Romney. He shouldn’t make my son’s death part of his political agenda,” she told WHDH. “It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama.”

Note: Romney did not specifically mention Doherty’s name and did not use it to denigrate Obama.

Our thoughts and prayers continue for the Doherty family and the loved ones of those slain in the Benghazi attack.

Romney’s Foreign Policy Speech (VIDEO, full text): Confidence, Clarity, Resolve

In a sweeping critique of Obama’s lead-from-behind foreign policy, Governor Mitt Romney today delivered a powerful, robust foreign policy speech at the Virginia Military Institute. Speaking of the recent explosion of violence and upheaval in the Middle East, Romney said it is “time to change course in the Middle East.”

Punctuating his national security positions before his next presidential debate on October 16th with Obama (foreign policy will be the topic), Romney said, “That course should be organized around these bedrock principles: America must have confidence in our cause, clarity in our purpose and resolve in our might. No friend of America will question our commitment to support them… no enemy that attacks America will question our resolve to defeat them… and no one anywhere, friend or foe, will doubt America’s capability to back up our words.”

Foreign policy expert and columnist, K.T. McFarland, today on television program ‘The Five’ (FOX News) enthusiastically exclaimed, ”I’ve been waiting 20 years for this speech! He [Romney] was channeling Reagan!” She also went on to say Romney’s “speech was actually really phenomenal and I commend him for doing it!” (MccFarland served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs under President Ronald Reagan from 1982 to 1985 and speech writer for Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger.)

‘The Mantel of Leadership’:

Transcript:

I particularly appreciate the introduction from my good friend and tireless campaign companion, Gov. Bob McDonnell. He is showing what conservative leadership can do to build a stronger economy. Thank you also Congressman Goodlatte for joining us today. And particular thanks to Gen. Peay. I appreciate your invitation to be with you today at the Virginia Military Institute. It is a great privilege to be here at an Institution that has done so much for our nation, both in war and in peace.

For more than 170 years, VMI has done more than educate students. It has guided their transformation into citizens, and warriors, and leaders. VMI graduates have served with honor in our nation’s defense, just as many are doing today in Afghanistan and other lands. Since the September 11th attacks, many of VMI’s sons and daughters have defended America, and I mourn with you the 15 brave souls who have been lost. I join you in praying for the many VMI graduates and all Americans who are now serving in harm’s way. May God bless all who serve, and all who have served.

Of all the VMI graduates, none is more distinguished than George Marshall—the Chief of Staff of the Army who became Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, who helped to vanquish fascism and then planned Europe’s rescue from despair. His commitment to peace was born of his direct knowledge of the awful costs and consequences of war.

General Marshall once said, “The only way human beings can win a war is to prevent it.” Those words were true in his time—and they still echo in ours.

Last month, our nation was attacked again. A U.S. Ambassador and three of our fellow Americans are dead — murdered in Benghazi, Libya. Among the dead were three veterans. All of them were fine men, on a mission of peace and friendship to a nation that dearly longs for both. President Obama has said that Ambassador Chris Stevens and his colleagues represented the best of America. And he is right. We all mourn their loss.

The attacks against us in Libya were not an isolated incident. They were accompanied by anti-American riots in nearly two dozen other countries, mostly in the Middle East, but also in Africa and Asia. Our embassies have been attacked. Our flag has been burned. Many of our citizens have been threatened and driven from their overseas homes by vicious mobs, shouting “Death to America.” These mobs hoisted the black banner of Islamic extremism over American embassies on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

As the dust settles, as the murdered are buried, Americans are asking how this happened, how the threats we face have grown so much worse, and what this calls on America to do. These are the right questions. And I have come here today to offer a larger perspective on these tragic recent events—and to share with you, and all Americans, my vision for a freer, more prosperous, and more peaceful world.

Foreign Policy #ObamaIsntWorking

If President Obama did as bad as he did in the debate on domestic policy, what is going to happen when the debates turn to the topic of foreign policy?

What the Media Doesn’t Want You to Know: Obama’s Follies

Below is an historical perspective that the media will diminish and distort, or not even disclose or discuss with America as they strive to protect and promote Barack Obama. Why? Whether in ideological alignment with Obama or striving for relevance and power in our society, the media is wont to attack or undermine Mitt Romney and the conservative movement, at any price without boundary, integrity or principle. What Obama and the media fail to realize in their blindness and pandering for relevance and power, is that they only become relevant and important unto themselves. By and through their misguided actions to become relevant, they become irrelevant. Never before in our history has the media, or our President for that matter, been so irresponsible and caught up in their own self-importance; never before have they been so blatant in their wants and posturing to America’s discredit; never before have they revealed who they really are and abandoned all ethical boundaries; never before have they exposed themselves with reckless and irresponsible abandon. The battle lines have been drawn and the media has joined the opposition. Their insidious lack of integrity and public profile is undermining the very fabric of our society, and all in the name of their principal advocate, Barack Obama. The same could be said for the liberal thinkers in our center-right society. The liberal thinkers and the media have aligned with one another and through their protestations convinced themselves that they are a reflection of American society; again, at the behest of their leading advocate, Barack Obama. They are not a reflection of the majority of American’s, yet - and hopefully they never will! Surely, they and Obama represent some in America, but clearly, truth and ideology be told, it is the minority. By and through their public pulpit each are convinced if they shout loud enough we will be equally convinced. What is tragic is the blatant lies and manipulations in play; with stories suppressed, polls manipulated, and lies promulgated - the media and Obama are trying to sell what is good as bad and what is bad as good. This deception has to stop! History has proven when the majority in society remain silent to the protestations of the extremes, lives and freedoms are lost - Not here, and not in America!

Intentional as the media may be to try and diminish and suppress conservative voter turnout by skewed and distorted polls, deceitful attacks on conservative values and Mitt Romney, or collusion to suppress information and deviate from substance - they will not succeed. I believe the efforts of deception will diminish Democratic turnout and elevate the Conservative turnout!

Noted in the recent post by Vic Lundquist, voices are being raised in opposition and standing on principles, gratefully!

The historical aggregation of some of Obama’s follies without sufficient media disclosure and publication is distressing for many reasons, not the least of which are the lives and freedoms lost.

1) Barack Obama’s failure to act on advance intel to protect our Libyan Ambassador and his colleagues; and his subsequent cover up of known intelligence reports conjunctive with his recent dismissiveness and failure to address and acknowledge terrorism on US territory in Libya and 20 embassies around the world.

2) Lives were lost because of Obama’s failed leadership and inattentions in the Middle East. Today our military is under severe threat because of the undermining attitudes and policies of Barack Obama. Each day we are losing men and women because of political posturing by Obama in Afghanistan - our enemy has infiltrated our ‘allies’ and are killing our soldiers, and nothing is said or done to stop it.

3) Barack Obama’s compromising leaks of national security matters to bolster his foreign policy bona fides, and put our nation at further risk.

4) Barack Obama’s foreign policy priorities to appease and accommodate our enemies; his foreign policy priorities to advocate the LGBT agenda as a condition of American aid, ‘cultural imperialism.’

5) Obama’s abandonment of world leadership; abandonment of Israel; accommodation to a soon-to-be nuclear Iran; accommodation to an Arab Winter and radical Islamic leadership that has put in play a conflagration in the Middle East.

6) Barack Obama’s willful taxes on the poor and middle class when he stated the contrary. (a) Obama stated he wouldn’t raise a dollar of tax on the middle class; and yet, he clearly stated he would wage a war on energy and bankrupt certain industries, including the coal industry. Consequentially, we have seen gasoline prices and home fuel costs more than double in 3 years. American’s are paying at least $1,200-$4,000 more per year in fuel costs because of Obama’s stated policies which is an egregious tax on all. (b) Obama’s debt agenda has imposed a principal borrowing of nearly $6 trillion, plus interest, on all Americans! His spending is one of the most significant taxes he can impose on this and future generations. What isn’t discussed is the cost of interest on this debt when interest rates go up, and they will go up. (c) Obamacare will further impose a minimum tax on all American’s of at least $4,000 per year and in the years to come, and so much more. Additionally, under Obamacare our seniors have to pay an added Obamacare tax on the sale of their homes.

41 Medal of Honor Recipients Endorse Mitt Romney

There are many reasons Mitt Romney is receiving enormous support from active duty military service members and veterans.

Governor Romney announced yesterday the endorsement of 41 Medal of Honor recipients:

“Of all the heroes that have served in our armed forces, only a few have had the great privilege of receiving the Medal of Honor,” said Mitt Romney. “They are the best of us all, and their dedication to our freedoms and their fellow servicemen and women serves as a shining example to every American. I am deeply honored and grateful to have the support of so many of these brave men, but my deeper thanks is for their service to this nation.”

“I have dedicated much of my life to the service of my country, and I want it to be in good hands for the next four years and beyond,” said Medal of Honor recipient Leo Thorsness. “In Mitt Romney, I believe we have a leader who can address the problems we face, while restoring America to its place on the world stage. Governor Romney understands the needs of our servicemen and women, and he will ensure that those who have fought for us abroad will not have to fight for a good job and good healthcare when they come home. We need that sort of leadership in the White House.”

An Iowa newspaper briefly described two Medal of Honor recipients who gave their support to Mitt Romney yesterday: Salvatore Giunta and George Day (the Iowa newspaper inappropriately used the term “winner” three times instead of the correct usage of “recipient”). Note: According to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society there are currently 81 living recipients.

Mitt Romney: Remembering National POW-MIA Recognition Day

Until they are home

The Pow-MIA flag features a white circle bearing a soldier’s silhouette, a watch tower with a guard on patrol, and a strand of barbed wire. White letters ‘POW’ and ‘MIA’, with a white five-pointed star in between, are placed above the circle. A black and white wreath displays the motto “You Are Not Forgotten”.

The POW-MIA flag is flown on the third Friday in September as well as Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day.

Far too many forget today is the United States’ National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Observed across the nation on the third Friday of September each year, Americans take this time to remember our prisoners of war (POW) and recognize those who are still missing in action (MIA).

Mitt Romney today paid his respects to America’s prisoners of war and missing in action. Following is his statement on National POW/MIA Recognition Day:

“As we mark National POW/MIA Recognition Day, I am mindful that when America goes to war, we run the risk of losing our servicemen and women to enemy capture. I’m proud to call John McCain, who endured captivity in Vietnam, a friend. He exemplifies those Americans who deserve all honor and respect for enduring hardship and for making sacrifices that we cannot readily imagine. My heart goes out to the families of those who remain missing, often for decades. They deserve to be remembered. And the best way to show our remembrance is by never ceasing in our quest to find them.”

Read about Senator McCain’s horrific ordeal as a Vietnam POW here and here.

More than 83,000 Americans are still missing from past conflicts. National POW/MIA observances will be held across the country today on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, and veterans’ facilities.

Mitt Romney Central joins Governor Romney in remembering and honoring these heroes and their families.

In the days after the Republican National Convention, we’ve heard liberal politicians and Obama’s media doing their best to portray Mitt Romney as somehow unpatriotic or anti-military because he didn’t specifically mention the military in his convention speech. What they sneakily fail to mention is that Governor Romney took the time out of his convention preparations - the day before he was to deliver his acceptance speech for the GOP nomination - to fly to Indianapolis, Indiana to meet and speak to over 10,000 Legionnaires about the challenges facing veterans. He spoke at their 94th American Legion National Convention.

A Frightening Moment For Our Nation …

Let’s review things for a moment . . .

A fresh-faced optimistic Democratic nominee (and future winner of the Nobel Peace Prize) is swept into office after a surprise win in the lead-off Iowa caucuses …

As this new President takes office, the economic crisis and national recession intensifies …

An iconic American automobile giant, on the verge of bankruptcy, receives a federal bailout and is “saved” …

Energy costs and inflation soar to historic levels …

Middle East relationships become tense and the US Ambassador to an Islamic agitator nation is murdered by Jihadist Muslim terrorists

The Islamic world isn’t frightened by obvious US military superiority, for they know this President wants to be loved and leave a legacy as a peace-maker …

The Republican Nominee is accused of a “shoot from the hip”/”shoot first; aim later” approach to foreign policy …

Russia is on the rise and emboldened by America’s decreased standing and respect in the world …

Against all reason (but with the help of a complicit media), this incumbent President leads his Republican challenger, a former Governor of a liberal state, in post-convention/pre-debate Gallup polls by close to double digits …

Many strong Republicans are disheartened by their prospects of winning the White House, thereby seeing their great country sink further into decline and disrepute …

The year? The President?

… none other than 1980 and Jimmy Carter my friends (or the present with Obama if you prefer …).

Russian Warships used by Democrats as Backdrop at DNC

We’re not making this up! This photograph of Soviet-era combatants used at the DNC is a composite. As such, I find it impossible to believe that the inclusion of not one, not two, not three, but four Russian warships as the central figures of military power was a mistake. Right… Whoever compiled the different images into one photograph had to know the source of the warships photo. This was no mistake! Don’t let them tell you it was.

Retired Admiral John Nathman speaks on stage with military veterans during the final day of the Democratic National Convention on Sept. 6 in Charlotte, N.C. Experts say the ships in the background are Russian.

Sam Fellman of Navy Times wrote:

While retired Adm. John Nathman, a former commander of Fleet Forces Command, honored vets as America’s best, the ships from the Russian Federation Navy were arrayed like sentinels on the big screen above.

These were the very Soviet-era combatants that Nathman and Cold Warriors like him had once squared off against.

“The ships are definitely Russian,” said noted naval author Norman Polmar after reviewing hi-resolution photos from the event. “There’s no question of that in my mind.”

Naval experts concluded the background was a photo composite of Russian ships that were overflown by what appear to be U.S. trainer jets.
[…]
“I was kind of in shock,” said Rob Barker, 38, a former electronics warfare technician who left the Navy in 2006. Having learned to visually identify foreign ships by their radars, Barker recognized the closest ship as the Kara-class cruiser Kerch.
[…]
But the fact they are Russian ships is not in doubt. In addition to the ship’s radar arrays and hulls, which are dissimilar from U.S. warships, the photo features one more give-away: a large white flag with a blue ‘X’ at the ships’ sterns.

Polmar, who authored “The Naval Institute Guide to the Soviet Navy,” recognized the blue ‘X’-mark: “The X is the Cross of St. Andrew’s, which is a Russian Navy symbol,” Polmar said. (An anchored U.S. warship, by contrast, flies the American flag on its stern.)

[emphasis added]

There is no way this is a mistake. The joke is on the American people! The photograph of Russian naval ships is obviously a stock image and as with any stock photograph, rights have to be purchased in order to use the image in any public forum. The person that procured the license to the image would have been completely informed of the source of the image. That is a fact. There is no doubt about that. Let’s watch how Obama’s team dances around this one! They are probably laughing about this.

Presidents Obama & Clinton Rebuked by Parents of Fallen Warrior

As a father of five, it is unimaginable what it would be like to lose a son or daughter in death. Billy and Karen Vaughn lost their son Aaron Carson Vaughn a little over a year ago in Afghanistan while he served our nation during Operation Enduring Freedom. Aaron enlisted in the Navy in 2002 and became a SEAL in 2004. Relatively few SEALs earn a place in the highly secretive counter-terrorism and Special Mission Unit DEVGRU (SEAL Team Six); Aaron earned a place in the squad in 2010.

We of the MRC team extend our most sincere condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn in their time of grief and pain.

This week, Karen Vaughn expressed her outrage at Presidents Obama and Clinton for their “audacity” to create a political ad to state how Mr. Obama would have been politically damaged had the Osama bin Laden raid gone south in some way.

Quoting Aaron’s mother Karen Vaughn (referring to Obama and Clinton):

“How out of touch can a human being be?

“He is so out of touch with his insanity!”

“Disgusting insensitivity to the families that have lost warriors on the battlefield!

Clinton: “The downside would have been horrible for him.” [Obama]

President Obama is not much more than a politician that will do or say anything to retain power as President of the United States of America. He will be fully revealed in the next 60+ days and as he is, voters will quickly realize that Mitt Romney will do everything in his power to honor those who serve our country and never with an eye to retaining power.

Obama Cuts Military Support to Israel & Receives Near Silence during Speech at Fort Bliss

Israeli F-15C (Eagle) Fighters (Photo: Israeli Military)

In an exclusive article published yesterday, TimeWorld reported (Exclusive: U.S. Scales-Back Military Exercise with Israel, Affecting Potential Iran Strike) that the U.S. government has been attempting to quietly cut support of Israel militarily, providing the excuse of “budget restrictions.” What budget? This excuse is laughable and is nothing more than an excuse. And spending restrictions? When has the Obama administration ever “restricted” its spending? President Obama is going to start to cut spending now by doing so with Israel? The entire article is a must-read. [Hat Tip to Kevin Anderson for sending over the Fort Bliss article] Excerpts:

Seven months ago, Israel and the United States postponed a massive joint military exercise that was originally set to go forward just as concerns were brimming that Israel would launch a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The exercise was rescheduled for late October, and appears likely to go forward on the cusp of the U.S. presidential election. But it won’t be nearly the same exercise. Well-placed sources in both countries have told TIME that Washington has greatly reduced the scale of U.S. participation, slashing by more than two-thirds the number of American troops going to Israel and reducing both the number and potency of missile interception systems at the core of the joint exercise.

“Basically what the Americans are saying is, ‘We don’t trust you,’” a senior Israeli military official tells TIME.

Photo: JewishCenter.org

The reductions are striking. Instead of the approximately 5,000 U.S. troops originally trumpeted for Austere Challenge 12, as the annual exercise is called, the Pentagon will send only 1,500 service members, and perhaps as few as 1,200. Patriot anti-missile systems will arrive in Israel as planned, but the crews to operate them will not. Instead of two Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense warships being dispatched to Israeli waters, the new plan is to send one, though even the remaining vessel is listed as a “maybe,” according to officials in both militaries.
[…]
In the current political context, the U.S. logic is transparent, says Israeli analyst Efraim Inbar. “I think they don’t want to insinuate that they are preparing something together with the Israelis against Iran – that’s the message,” says Inbar, director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University. “Trust? We don’t trust them. They don’t trust us. All these liberal notions! Even a liberal president like Obama knows better.”

[emphasis added]

Mr. Obama’s support from active duty military service members and veterans alike has fallen substantially over the last year amid constant reports of intentionally leaking of classified intelligence including well placed assets, methods of operation, numbers of special operations personnel involved in missions, etc. His support for re-election continues to slide among those in the military. Could it be because our active duty service members have been well aware of Mr. Obama’s weakening partnership with one of America’s strongest allies? Consider as evidence the speech he gave yesterday at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Several articles reported the event with all of them mentioning the lackluster reception received by their commander in chief. One article (Obama speech to soldiers met with silence) by The Daily Caller provided a point by point account of the speech that fell flat throughout:

President Barack Obama was greeted with fleeting applause and extended periods of silence as he offered profuse praise to soldiers and their families during an Aug. 31 speech in Fort Bliss, Texas.

His praise for the soldiers — and for his own national-security policies — won cheers from only a small proportion of the soldiers and families in the cavernous aircraft-hanger.

The audience remains quiet even when the commander-in-chief thanked the soldiers’ families, and cited the 198 deaths of their comrades in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The audience’s reaction was so flat that the president tried twice to elicit a reaction from the crowd.

“Hey, I hear you,” he said amid silence. Click here to continue reading
