Mitt Talking Points

For those of us talking to friends about why Mitt over Obama, I thought I’d compile a few talking points:

1. National Debt.

national debt

-Obama has significantly added to our now $16 trillion in national debt and has had over $1 trillion in deficits in each of his four years, after promises to cut deficit in half. Obama still has no plan, unless you count the glossy photo brochure with re-tread unfulfilled promises from 2008. Romney / Ryan do have a plan.

2. Bipartisanship.

-Mitt has been a model of bi-partisanship, which will be needed to reduce the deficit. Obama has blamed a GOP Congress for his failures.

3. Mitt’s a Model of Success.

-Mitt’s business, personal and government life are models of success. He’s actually done what Obama has promised: balanced budgets, turned broken enterprises around. Obama can’t seem to get past his own pride.

4. Four More Years?

-We have experienced 4 years of Obama. To expect better the 2d term is, by definition, insane. He knows he can’t change Washington from the outside.

5. Historically Low Employment.

-3.5 years of unemployment over 8%. If people hadn’t left workforce unemployment today would be over 10%.

6. Obama’s Work Ethic.

-Obama seems to show up about half the time (famously missing security briefings, unbelievable number of golf games). Mitt is already preparing just in case he wins the election, so he’ll be ready to hit the ground running.

7. Obamacare.

-This is our last chance to unwind Obamacare. Otherwise all the taxes, future healthcare rationing, lack of doctors and other problems will be permanent.

8. Supreme Court.

-Between 2 and 3 Supreme Court justices are likely to retire during the next 4 years, a liberal, a conservative and a swing justice. The next president will likely stack the court for a generation, either right or left.

9. Mitt Has a Plan.

-Mitt has a 5 point plan for economic success, Obama only attacks Mitt; does not have a real plan. Mitt’s plan: expand energy, build workers’ skills, cut deficit, focus on small business, promote fair trade. Obama’s: raise taxes, keep spending.

10. Stuff Obama Says (Odd Priorities; Egotism).

-Stuff Obama says: 4 deaths in Libya were a “bump in the road.” “If you have a small business, you didn’t build that.” Conservatives cling to guns and religion. He tells the Des Moines Register he has a plan to deal with immigration but wants to keep it off the record. Telling the Russian president he’ll have more flexibility when he doesn’t face re-election. I could go on.

11. Newspaper Endorsements.

-Reno Gazette Journal and a slew of other papers just endorsed Mitt.

12. Weak Foreign Policy.

-Obama’s foreign policy isn’t working; projecting an image of weakness has invited attack. First US ambassador to be killed in 30 years after security assistance was requested; the White House was alerted but did nothing while a drone watched. Stories out of the administration were inconsistent for weeks.

13. Twelve Million Jobs.

-Mitt has promised to create 12 million jobs in his first term.

14. President Biden?

-If anything happens to Obama, Joe Biden would be president.

I know there are others. My imagination tends to wane in the wee hours of the night. Add to comments what your talking points are…

It’s Now Time To Decide

If you had already made up your mind going into Monday night’s presidential debate, nothing said probably changed your mind. But for those who were undecided, there certainly was some food for thought.

But what was lacking on the part of the president was a vision for the future and credibility based on the past. The current commander in chief repeatedly accused Romney of reaching back into history for failed policies of the past both home and abroad. The president summoned images of President Herbert Hoover and others which history has deemed failures. In doing so, Obama tried to gloss over his own history of failed promises — on unemployment, on balancing the budget, cutting the deficit and — as we believe — earning the respect of our overseas allies.

Admittedly, Obama’s failures center mostly around domestic policy — Romney’s strength. But as Romney pointed out Monday night, in order to be strong and respected on the international stage, the United States must be strong economically.

As readers know, there is no doubt on the part of the editorial board here at Foster’s Daily Democrat new leadership is needed from the White House. We believe all three debates — but especially the first — support that notion. We believe that, on balance, the debates have shown Mitt Romney to be the more capable and with a vision for the future — a vision President Obama has failed to offer.

On Nov. 6, we urge voters to give Mitt Romney a chance to offer the nation real hope and change.

Romney’s The One

Four years ago the voters put their faith in a man who offered vague promises of hope and change at a time when any change looked like a good idea and hope was in short supply.

What this nation got in Barack Obama was a president who used an economic crisis to further his redistributionist agenda — and, not surprisingly, failed miserably at restoring American prosperity. Oh, he brought change all right — to a government-knows-best philosophy that has given us four years of high unemployment, higher gas prices, a $16 trillion deficit, and a job-killing regulatory environment.
..
Enough! This isn’t the kind of change anyone can believe in.

The other simple fact is that in Mitt Romney voters have not merely a safe and steady alternative but a proven leader and an extraordinarily skilled expert in the art of the economic turnaround.

He did that all over again for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

What Romney knows at the core of his being is that sometimes government must step aside and sometimes it must lead.

Last night the nation saw a man who in the area of foreign policy is prepared to lead, who knows that for the United States to remain safe it must reclaim its place on the world stage.

During the last four years the world has become a more dangerous place. We can’t afford four more years of a leadership vacuum.

Not when in Mitt Romney voters have the choice of a strong, smart hand on the helm, a decent, caring man, who lives his faith, who loves his country and would serve it well. For all of those reasons, the Boston Herald is pleased to endorse Mitt Romney for president.

Obama’s Pamphlet? Romney to Deliver Significant Economic Speech in Iowa

Photo - Eric Thayer / Getty Images

BIG News…

Governor Mitt Romney will deliver a significant economic speech this Friday in Ames, Iowa.

CNN:

His speech will be delivered in Ames, Iowa, and is aimed at “reinforcing the big choice in November,” a top campaign adviser told CNN.

At that rally in Reno, Nevada, Romney also underscored his argument that Obama is not advancing an economic plan.

“We’ve had four debates and he hasn’t been able to describe what his plan is to get this economy going,” the GOP candidate said. “You can boil what he’s saying down to four simple words, and that is: ‘more of the same.'”

Romney’s economic speech comes on the same day he and running mate Paul Ryan will rally supporters in Ohio.

Isn’t it telling that throughout all these months of Obama not drafting a budget, avoiding meetings with his security council, whacking the ball on the golf course, shooting hoops, throwing White House parties, appearing on late night talk shows, hanging out with Anna Wintour, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Eva Longoria, and more, and blah blahing about Big Bird, binders, and bayonets, he couldn’t put together a pencilled paragraph on what he plans to do, if elected, for the next four years.

Suddenly, after the lights on the last presidential debate were turned out, the very next morning in Delray, Florida, Obama was ballyhooing a booklet of 20 glossy pages he’d pasted together on how he plans to continue to destroy America undo the mistakes from his first four years. For all the fake noise he’s made these many months about Romney not having a plan (which Romney did and continues to have) Obama never mentioned a peep about NEW plans when they could have been discussed and examined and in a debate. But, hey. That’s his M.O.; think back on the way Obamacare slimed into being. Transparency and Obama are like a tomcat and a bubblebath. Ain’t gonna happen.

Shortly after word of Obama’s pamphlet sailed across the universe surrounded with the gilded halo of the mainstream media, I was pleasantly shocked when CNN’s Jessica Yellin declared Obama had nothing new; it was what he’s been saying for months, just old stuff in a glossy booklet.

It’s too little, too late, same ol’, same ol’, so sad, too bad.

From The Wall street Journal (Obama was speaking of his sudden, sparkly new plans):

I won’t be running the okey doke on you,” he [Obama] added.

Voters may okey doke themselves if they believe this document, which is heavy on backward-looking and discredited factoids and light on economic specifics.

Tune in, America.

On Friday, you’re going to hear a successful, proven leader, job-creating businessman expound even further on how we get out of this mess. You’ll see the difference between our okey doke, slowpoke President and masterstroke Mitt Romney.

Paul Ryan’s MUST-HEAR Speech in Cleveland: War on Poverty? Poverty is Winning

GOP V.P. candidate Congressman Paul Ryan gestures while speaking of the war on poverty during a speech at the Walter B. Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. Oct 24, 2021 (Photo - Tony Dejak/AP)

A packed auditorium awaited him…

Congressman Paul Ryan today was very warmly received today as he walked on stage at the University of Cleveland in Ohio. With his unique, clear capacity to speak succinctly on the enriching principles of our free enterprise system, Ryan delivered a powerhouse speech on upward mobility and the economy.

War on Poverty? Poverty is Winning

FOX 8 Cleveland offers this preview:

WATCH Ryan’s entire speech here (begins @:37).

Transcript of Ryan’s compelling speech:

UPWARD MOBILITY AND THE ECONOMY

Thank you very much for that warm welcome – and thank you Jimmy, for that great introduction. I want to thank everyone at Cleveland State University for your kind hospitality. I especially want to thank President Berkman for his help in making this happen. And of course, none of us would be here today without the extraordinary work of Bob Woodson and the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise. Thank you, Bob, for bringing us together today.

We are here in partnership on behalf of an idea – that no matter who your parents are, no matter where you come from, you should have the opportunity in America to rise, to escape from poverty, and to achieve whatever your God-given talents and hard work enable you to achieve.

In so many ways, our nation’s history has been a long struggle to bring opportunity into every life. Our nation was founded on the creed that “all men are created equal” – that we all possess equal rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But, of course, equality of opportunity hasn’t always been a fact of life in our country – it’s been something we’ve had to constantly fight for. It’s a cause that continues to this day.

Even though so many barriers to equality have fallen, too many old inequities persist. Too many children, especially African-American and Hispanic children, are sent into mediocre schools and expected to perform with excellence. African-American and Hispanic children make up only 38 percent of the nation’s overall students, but they are 69 percent of the students in schools identified as lowest performing.

That’s unacceptable. We owe every child a chance to succeed. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, we owe them “an unfettered start and a fair chance in the race of life.” Upward mobility is the central promise of life in America. But right now, America’s engines of upward mobility aren’t working the way they should.

Mitt Romney and I are running because we believe that Americans are better off in a dynamic, free-enterprise-based economy that fosters economic growth, opportunity and upward mobility instead of a stagnant, government-directed economy that stifles job creation and fosters government dependency.

There is something wrong in our country when 40 percent of children born to parents in the lowest fifth of earners never know anything better. The question before us today – and it demands a serious answer – is how do we get the engines of upward mobility turned back on, so that no one is left out from the promise of America?

Romney/Ryan: Resounding, Resolute Support at Red Rocks, CO!

Thousands upon thousands came to hear Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan speak last night at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, near Morrison, Colorado. NM Governor Susana Martinez, and entertainers Kid Rock and Rodney Atkins, also shared the stage with Romney and Ryan. Click on image to enlarge.

What a night!

In spite of gridlocked traffic hours before the event began, from near and far, they pressed forward. Driving up mountain roads, through the rocks they came…

As far as the eye could see, thousands of Romney/Ryan supporters made their way to magnificent Red Rocks Park, Colorado, for a chance in a life-time to see Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan - together for the first time in the beautiful Centennial State. The venue filled to capacity; many were turned away.

Sarah Hoyt at Instapundit.com writes:

Romney Ryan Rally at Red Rocks: [W]e left our home in time to get there just before five under normal conditions. About thirty miles out, the highway became a parking lot, where we got stuck for the next two hours. The freaky thing was the lines extending behind us at least as much. The highway exit was closed, but we’re conservatives/libertarians, we find ways. So we went back roads, parked in way outlaying parking lot (for another facility) and tried to walk. Only the people ahead of us were getting turned back at the door, so we all walked back to our cars shouting stuff like “Romney” and “Soon a real president.” Look at those pictures and let me tell you, at least that many of us were turned away or prevented from approaching.

See 360 photo posted here (scroll in/out, click two circles at top for 360 degree views).

As the enormous crowd waited to hear Congressman Ryan and Governor Romney (who, by the way, was fresh off his third and final well-executed debate with Obama), entertainers Kid Rock and Rodney Atkins wowed them.

Up-and-comer New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez - the first female Hispanic governor in the history of the United States - was also on hand to rev up the massive audience. (Remember her terrific GOP Convention speech?!)

Martinez:

Now, President Obama rattled off a “cute” joke last night about defense planning not being a game of Battleship. Well Mr. President, our BUDGET isn’t a game of Monopoly, either! Attacking Mitt Romney is NOT an agenda. Four more years, like the last four years, is NOT a solution.”

You see, this election, we’re not just picking the next president for four more years. WE are picking the direction and course of our country for a generation. It doesn’t matter which generation you come from - this is the most important election in YOUR generation!

Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton also popped on stage to voice strong support for Romney and Ryan. (*See press release below).

If there would have been a roof to raise, this Romney/Ryan rally would have blown it clear up to the moon shining down on them.

UPDATE - Highlights not included on above video:

Romney supporter: “I have been at Red Rocks because I’ve lived here and I have never seen a crowd like this!

Another supporter: “It’s on fire! Red Rocks is on fire because Mitt Romney is here. And, we are thrilled to be a part of it.”

A view from the top… “More people came than the amphitheater could hold. Momentum grows even more!” (Photo and comments from @dmitchell624)

For President

After nearly four years of economic stagnation, massive unemployment, record-setting debt and government intrusions into the economy that have paralyzed the private sector, the United States needs a new direction. For this reason, The Dispatch urges voters to choose Republican Mitt Romney for president in the Nov. 6 election.

Four years after promising hope and change, and after a deficit-driving $787 billion stimulus program, here is the result:

• 12.1 million unemployed, with an unemployment rate above 8 percent for 43 of the past 44 months.

• 8.6 million working part time because they can’t find full-time work

• 2.5 million who wanted to work, but have stopped looking for jobs.

• In 2009, real median household income was $52,195. By 2011, it had fallen to $50,054

• In 2009, the U.S. poverty rate was 14.3 percent. By 2011, the poverty rate climbed to 15 percent.

• On Obama’s watch, 12 million more Americans joined the food-stamp program, which has reached a record of more than 46 million enrollees.

• Annual federal budget deficits above $1 trillion for the past four years, increasing the national debt to an all-time high of $16 trillion.

Obama has failed. That is why Mitt Romney is the preferred choice for president. Romney’s adult life has been spent turning around troubled private and public institutions. These turnarounds include scores of companies acquired and restructured by Bain Capital, the investment firm he founded in 1984. Not all were successes, but that is because to a significant degree, many of the companies Bain took on were high-risk. In 1999, he was asked to take over the scandal-plagued and fiscally mismanaged 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. He quickly streamlined its management, fixed its finances and guaranteed its security, turning it into a success. As governor of Massachusetts, he made tough decisions to lead the state out of a budget deficit, and he did so in a state dominated by Democrats.

As a career businessman and former governor, Romney brings a wealth of executive experience in the private sector and the public sector that dwarfs that of Obama. From working both sides of the government/private-sector equation, he understands how that relationship can aid or impede prosperity. His election would be an immediate signal to the private sector that someone who knows what he is doing is managing the nation’s economic policy. The effect on business confidence would be dramatic and immediate, and business confidence is the vital ingredient needed to spur investment and hiring, the two things that the United States so desperately needs.

In 2008, Americans made a leap of faith when they elevated the inexperienced Obama to the White House. That faith was not rewarded. This time, voters should place their hopes for change in experience, by electing Romney.

Our Pick For President: Romney

Two days after his lackluster first debate performance, President Barack Obama’s re-election hopes got a timely boost. The government’s monthly jobless report for September showed the nation’s unemployment rate fell below 8 percent for the first time since he took office.

If that were the only metric that mattered, the president might credibly argue that the U.S. economy was finally on the right track. Unfortunately for him, and for the American people, he can’t.

We have little confidence that Obama would be more successful managing the economy and the budget in the next four years. For that reason, though we endorsed him in 2008, we are recommending Romney in this race.

Now the president and his supporters are attacking Romney because his long-term budget blueprint calls for money-saving reforms to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, three of the biggest drivers of deficit spending. Obama would be more credible in critiquing the proposal if he had a serious alternative for bringing entitlement spending under control. He doesn’t.

[T]he core of Romney’s campaign platform, his five-point plan, at least shows he understands that reviving the economy and repairing the government’s balance sheet are imperative — now, not four years in the future.

Romney has a strong record of leadership to run on. He built a successful business. He rescued the 2002 Winter Olympics from scandal and mismanagement. As governor of Massachusetts, he worked with a Democrat-dominated legislature to close a $3billion budget deficit without borrowing or raising taxes….

But after reflecting on his [Obama’s] four years in the White House, we also don’t think that he’s the best qualified candidate in this race.

We endorse Mitt Romney for president.

Gov Christie Inspires Voters: “Romney/Ryan Are The Way to Fix This Broken Country”

Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ) is pictured showing his support for Mitt Romney while campaigning with the former MA Governor and his wife, Ann Romney, in Iowa, December 29, 2011. (Photo - Jewel Samad/AFP/Getty)

What a powerhouse!

New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie flew yesterday into crucial swing-state Virginia to rock the vote for Romney/Ryan. The crowd gathered at Ball Office Products in Richmond were given a walloping treat. After Romney’s VA campaign manager, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling warmed up the crowd, Christie owned the lectern.

A few highlights (and there were many!):

Christie said the message he got coming out of the Democrat’s National Convention was - their words - “Government is the only thing we all belong to.” He replied that even in blue state New Jersey, “We were taught we don’t belong to government; the government belongs to us.”

The New Jersey Gov also reminded listeners of another recent belief Obama revealed: “You can’t change Washington D.C. from the inside.” Christie asked, “If he really believes that, then what the he*# is he doing asking for another four years?” He says Obama is asking for another four years to figure it out. His response to Obama’s plea? “You know what, Mr. President? I’m tired of waiting for you to figure it out!

@9:04:

He’d [Obama] never run anything in his life. And so the President doesn’t know how to lead. I mean watch what he’s been like for the past four years. He’s like a man wandering around a dark room, hands up against the wall, clutching for the light switch of leadership, and he just can’t find it. And, he won’t find it in the next 18 days! Blindly, blindly, walking around the White House… looking for a clue – looking for a clue.”

And you, know, the unfortunate thing for the President is this - is that there are clues everywhere - if he’d just open his eyes.

America, are you listening? Kick back and SOAK THIS UP:

@11:50:

I heard the President the other night in the debate say “Governor Romney says that I want a bigger government and that’s just not true. (laughter) Well, Governor Romney is not the guy who has run up SIX TRILLION dollars in new debt in four years as president. Governor Romney is not the one that has created new boards, commissions, czars, all over government that he’s paying millions and millions and millions of dollars to of our money to try and manipulate more and more things in the private economy, to try to get his desired result. And let me tell ya, Mitt Romney is not the guy who is looking to take money away from hard-working Americans and redistributing it across the country based on the government’s plan. He thinks the American PEOPLE should be able to decide how to spend their own money – not the government.

@ 12:42:

A few Sundays ago, before the first debate, Governor Romney asked me to go on all those Sunday morning shows for him. And you might remember back then, a couple of days before the first debate, the campaign wasn’t flying high. People were feeling a little nervous about how the campaign was going and what the last month of the campaign would look like. So they asked me to go on all those shows and deal with all those feisty hosts. (laughter) I don’t know why they picked me. (laughter and applause) And, so they asked me - Bob Schieffer, George Stephanopoulos, David Gregory - they all asked me “Well, what’s gonna happen, Governor Christie, on Wednesday at the debate, what’s gonna happen at Governor Romney’s campaign? How can it possibly turn around? Isn’t the race really over?” And I said to them, “You wait. You wait until Wednesday night ‘cuz Mitt Romney is gonna win that debate and turn this race UPSIDE DOWN. “

Mitt Romney is better prepared, smarter, and more ready for the presidency , and I knew he’d show ‘em that in those debates and he sure did!

NJ Gov Chris Christie ditched his suit jacket and launched into facts about Obama’s lack of leadership and praise for Mitt Romney in front of the crowd at Ball Office Products in Henrico county, Richmond, VA. Oct 19,2021 (Photo – Jim Nolan:Time)

@21:48 Christie quotes John Adams:

John Adams was near his death and this is what he wrote in his diary - and he wrote it for us, he wrote it for us. And, this is what he said: “You shall never know the sacrifices that we have made to secure for you your liberty. Make a good use of it. For if you do not, I shall repent in heaven for ever having made the sacrifices at all.”

Very inspiring!

Christie challenged voters in Virginia to to give an hour a day for the remaining days leading up to and including November 6th to preserve our constitutional freedoms and help Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan win. Contact Romney Campaign Headquarters in Virginia. Christie’s call to take our country back applies to all of us. Will YOU give an hour a day to preserve liberty? Can you do more? Get yourself in gear here!

THANK YOU, Governor Christie!

Obama Just Doesn’t Understand

November’s election will likely come down to how people feel about the candidates…what their gut tells them.

Unfortunately for the president, jobs numbers and anemic economic growth continue to be, as Mitt Romney has put it, a continual “kick in the gut.” Despite finally pulling to even compared to when he came into office at 7.8% unemployment, after taking into account everyone who stopped working due to Obama discouragement, the unemployment rate would now be over 10%. Not acceptable.

In addition, it’s clear Obama just doesn’t get it when it comes to job creation. At Tuesdays’ debate he kept incredulously saying Mitt’s tax plan didn’t work because it contained trillions in cuts (that Mitt says aren’t even accurate), and he doesn’t understand how they’re paid for. Is anyone surprised Obama just doesn’t understand? It’s clear from his record. Why should we be surprised he scratches his head when looking at Mitt’s plan? Mitt knows: cutting taxes will help create jobs. It worked for Reagan. Paul Ryan pointed out it worked for Kennedy. It’ll work for President Romney.

If you think President Obama is a friend to the middle class, and you have a job, congratulations, you’re in better shape than many. But you need to watch this video from back in April to understand just what will happen to you under Obama’s planned tax increases. Not just for the wealthy, but everyone.

President Obama’s response to anemic job growth? Raise taxes. Apply leaches to the patient of the economy. As the growth of the economy has been slower the longer he’s been president, he’s still said he’s taken “step[s] in the right direction.” Tiny steps, getting shorter.

It makes me wonder, after all of President Obama’s attempts to label Mitt Romney as a job outsourcer or out-of-touch rich guy, who is the real friend of the middle class? Even if President Obama is really trying, nothing he’s doing is working. Past reports have said the Obama recovery ranked dead last in modern times, at that time ten out of ten for both jobs and economic growth. I haven’t found an updated report, but I understand growth has slowed, not improved, since. During the period measured, jobs had grown only 4.1% since the recession’s low point. Reagan’s record during the same period was 10.7%. So it’s not like it can’t be done. It’s been done before.

Michigan, are you listening? Debunking Obama’s Bankruptcy Spin on Auto Bailouts

Obama’s auto bailout ‘success’ is a disaster for taxpayers.

Like a toddler who likes to continually jabber a new phrase, Obama keeps blabbering “Romney said let Detroit go bankrupt! Romney said let Detroit go bankrupt!”

Here’s what our prattling President doesn’t want Americans to know:

Deceitful, smoke-‘n-mirrors Obama ADOPTED Mitt Romney’s idea of a managed bankruptcy for American car makers. BUT, Obama’s mishandling of the process has proven very costly.

Romney Press - Oct 16, 2012:

Mitt Romney Will Help Our Auto Industry Become Stronger And More Competitive

As a Michigan native and the son of a car guy, Mitt Romney has always believed that a strong auto industry is an essential component of the nation’s economy. He has a plan that will help the auto industry move forward into a new era of innovation and dominance.

  • Domestic Energy Production That Aids Manufacturing: We are on the cusp of a manufacturing renaissance in the United States, and it will be made possible by an abundant supply of cheap, reliable energy within our borders. Mitt Romney will have a true all-of-the-above strategy that includes coal, natural gas, oil and other resources.

  • Trade That Works For Our Auto Industry: Our workers make the best cars in the world. We must develop markets abroad where our cars can be sold. Mitt Romney will open new markets to American automakers far more aggressively than this President has.
  • Stand Up To China And Level The Playing Field: Mitt Romney will stand up to countries like China that don’t play by the rules. Starting on day one, Mitt Romney will make clear to China that they must respect the intellectual property of American manufacturers and open their markets to American products.
  • Lower Our Corporate Tax Rate To Boost Competitiveness: Mitt Romney will reduce the corporate tax rate, so that our carmakers can compete on a level playing field both at home and around the world, and can afford to invest more in breakthrough products. He will also stop the foolish practice of imposing an extra tax on our automakers when they sell cars overseas so they can reinvest the profits here at home.
  • Get Government Out Of The Car Business: President Obama has told Detroit what kind of cars to build, implemented extraordinarily onerous regulations that will drive up the cost of each car by thousands of dollars, and to this day owns more than one quarter of General Motors. Mitt Romney will get the federal government out of the auto industry and eliminate regulations that distort the market and drive up costs.
  • A Reminder – Mitt Romney supported a managed bankruptcy process for our automakers, which is what President Obama ultimately agreed to support:

Months After Taking Office, President Obama Finally Arrived At The Conclusion That Managed Bankruptcy Was Preferable To His Initial Strategy. “The Obama’s administration’s leading plan to fix General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC would use bankruptcy filings to purge the ailing companies of their biggest problems, including bondholder debt and retiree health-care costs, according to people familiar with the matter. … President Barack Obama’s task force has told both companies that the administration prefers this route … rather than the prolonged out-of-court process that has thus far frustrated administration officials.” (The Wall Street Journal, 3/30/09)

The Obama Administration Ultimately Found Bankruptcy To Be The Only Way Forward. “The administration says a ‘surgical’ structured bankruptcy may be the only way forward for GM and Chrysler, and President Obama held out that prospect Monday. ‘I know that when people even hear the word ‘bankruptcy,’ it can be a bit unsettling, so let me explain what I mean,’ he said.” (The Wall Street Journal, 3/30/09)

What did Governor Romney NOT support? Labor Union handouts, giving American companies to foreign owners, ill-considered dealership closings, and keeping government in the car business:

President Obama’s Handling Of The Bailout Gave The United Auto Workers Union A Majority Ownership Stake In Chrysler. “The Obama administration’s decision to bail out Chrysler gave the union trust what was initially a majority ownership position of 55 percent of its shares.” (Reuters, 6/3/11)

The Obama Administration Handed Over Control Of Chrysler To Fiat, An Italian Automaker. “Chrysler LLC, for years America’s third-biggest automaker, survived perhaps the most dire of its periodic near-death experiences in 2008 and 2009, when the federal government forced it into bankruptcy, pumped in $10 billion in taxpayer funds and put it under the control of the Italian automaker Fiat, with the auto workers union as the company’s biggest shareholder.” ((The New York Times, 7/30/12)

U.S. taxpayers kept the nation’s largest auto maker by sales afloat with a $50 billion bailout in 2009 and now own 26.5% of the Detroit company. But GM executives have grown increasingly frustrated with that ownership and the stigma of being known as ‘Government Motors.’” (The Wall Street Journal, 9/17/12)

Things are jumping in swing-state Ohio!

For the first time this campaign season, Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice hit the campaign trail yesterday for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. At a packed college sports stadium in Berea, Ohio, just outside of Cleveland, Senator Rob Portman pumped up the crowd while introducing Rice. She spoke of the pivotal crossroad our country is now at and, how her service as Secretary of State enabled her to see how important America’s role is in the world. Following her inspirational remarks, VP candidate Paul Ryan gave a rousing speech to the enthusiastic crowd.

    Here’s video:

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice:

I’m here because I want, like you, to see this country prosper, to see this country continue to be a place of unlimited opportunity, to see this country lead the world toward prosperity, and liberty, and peace. And so, I’m here to support Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in this quest.”

This is a pivotal time in our country’s history.”

The last four years have been very tough on folks who just want to work hard and make a living. … Many Americans out of work wonder if they’re ever going to work again and, you know, they have reason to [worry] because the longer you’re out of work, the less likely you are to find a job. And so, when Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan say they’re going to put this country back to work - THIS IS AN URGENT CALL - not one for which we can wait another four years.”

After the event, Ryan, Rice, and Portman toured the Cleveland Browns football training facility.
