Romney vs. Axelrod: A Tale of Two Pressers

I’m excited to mention that Rush read one of our MRC tweets on the air today. I’m not posting it here on the top because it’s part of this story. To see the tweet he read and hear the audio be sure to continue reading the story below. Thanks, Nate.

Very interesting news today has many heretofore Romney-doubting GOPers taking courage in the swift, hard-hitting capabilities of the Romney campaign. Two “surprise” press conferences were held today, by Romney and Axelrod, but only one ended up being an actual surprise. Both were dominated by the Romney camp. These events happened early enough today that they were actually discussed on Rush and Hannity today, and will certainly make your evening news.

Part One: The Axelrod press conference

  • A surprise visit by Chief Obama strategist David Axelrod to Boston was publicly announced just last night. Purpose of his “presser”: Dis Romney’s record as Governor.
  • Oddly, the short notice is somehow enough time for CNN to arrange to have a live feed available. Team Romney springs into action to round up a large group of protesters armed with big signs, and chants.
  • Romney supporters are waiting on the steps of the capital building as Obama’s advance Team arrives to set up. (Pics below)
  • Throughout the presser attention is obviously stolen by protesters as they run through a series of chants including: Solyndra, Five more months, We want Mitt, Where are the jobs, Broken record, and more. Axelrod actually responds to protestors at one point with the phrase “You can’t handle the truth.”
  • Big win for Team Romney as news reports focus on the protestors rather than Axelrod’s anti-Romney message.

Part Two: Romney holds surprise press conference in front of Solyndra

  • On the other side of the country Team Romney has the entire press corp on a bus with Mitt on board as well. The press are told only that they are going to a secret location and they will be there in one hour.
  • Less than an hour after Axelrod’s presser ends CNN (and others) break news that Romney will hold press conference at Solyndra.
  • Mitt highlights the failure of Solyndra as a symbol of Obama’s administration and calls it a huge conflict of interest by Obama.
  • Conservatives in the blogosphere and on twitter cheer Team Romney for being two steps ahead of the competition

This is one of those days that is great for following news events on twitter. I will enclose only a small number of the great tweets, pictures and videos coming from today’s events. More below the fold.

First, I’ve got to play for you the audio of Rush reading the following tweet on air today:

Ed Morrisey at Hot Air: Video: Famous Chicago political organizer … outorganized?; Update: Romney holds surprise presser of his own outside Solyndra

Word started leaking about the Boston event last last night, according to the NYT’s Michael Shear, while the campaign announced it this morning. Somehow — oddly — CNN managed to have enough planning time to have a live feed broadcasting over the network. As the video shows, though, that coup ended up backfiring on Axelrod, who stammered and looked rattled indeed, as Shear describes.

Yup … this ain’t 2008, that’s for sure.

Byron York at The Examiner: Combative Romney team hits Obama coast-to-coast

In the course of a couple of hours Thursday, the Romney campaign sent out unmistakable signals that it intends to fight the guerilla warfare of a presidential campaign with a new aggressiveness and combativeness.
First, word of the event leaked last night, and the Romney campaign quickly scheduled an event of its own at the state house about an hour before Axelrod’s. Then, when Democrats began speaking, a crowd of about 100 Romney workers, supporters, and volunteers showed up to chant, shout, and heckle the speakers every step of the way.
Shortly after the Boston event, Romney launched a sneak attack of his own, holding a news conference at the headquarters of Solyndra, the bankrupt solar energy company that received $535 million in loan guarantees from the Obama administration. According to reporters traveling with Romney, the campaign did not tell the press about the event until the bus was actually on its way to Solyndra.
The bottom line is, Thursday marked a new escalation in the day-to-day fighting between the Obama and Romney campaigns. And Team Romney hopes it has sent a very clear message that it will punch, and counter-punch, as hard as is necessary.

Particularly interesting to me is the mass of comments on the Hot Air post, and also numerous tweets throughout the day, by those who are in the the Anybody-But-Obama camp who are just now realizing they had misconceptions of what a Romney general campaign would look like. Gone are the notions that Romney would be wishy-washy, stale and boring, and would easily buckle to the whims of the left and the media. Team Romney has shown early that they are alert, savvy, and already thinking two-steps ahead of the competition.

Maybe a headline like: “Romney Schools Obama & Team in Gorilla Warfare”

Kidding aside, this tells me that given the same event of a SEAL mission and operation in which the Obama administration leaked classified information that compromised lives, methods, and sources, Romney would maintain disciplined secrecy and therefore protect the Constitution. Isn’t that what Mr. Obama is supposed to be sworn to do?

Axelrod will be fired. Mark my words. His days are limited. If not fired, he will be demoted or he will resign. The guy used to be good at the dance. Now he is stepping all over the feet of his partners and tripping himself up. I have never seen any person in politics as shifty and nervous as that man.

I think this day for the Romney Team is akin to three aces in a row in a championship tennis match.

How much time do we give Axelrod in national politics?

  3. AfricansforRomney says:

LOL! I wish i was there.
This is not 2008, Bozo. Chicago style bullying is not gonna work this time. Listen Mr, Axelord, the TRUTH, the Whole TRUTH, and Nothing but the TRUTH will follow you wherever you go.

    Obama=Desperate=Out of touch=a one time Prez=Carter

LOVED reading this! Let’s keep fighting the good fight, Romnites!

  6. Mike in LV says:

Very Great move. The Fact that the Romney Campaign is able to organize so quickly proves that this will not be an easy election for Obama, as some have thought. Remember back in Sept. the Kill Romney comments? Well Obama will have had 14 months to fight Romney. Romney being able to fight and win in his Parties Nomination, and fight back this quickly proves that They are really ready to take the white house.
Now that we know they can scramble, we will see how well they strategize. Not every comment and press conference needs to be bombed. So which ones will they allow to go and which will they jump on!?! This makes a strategist like myself giddy!

  7. ccr says:

Appreciate the tweets, the pics, the news! Mike in LV…….you’re making me smile, giddy strategist! I don’t see you chatting much since it’s gotten so busy but it’s surely been great seeing where we are from a year ago with Mitt!

Keep up the great Mitt strategists!! Great day……..great week!

  8. TimShawSr says:

I just love the way Romney’s team is fighting back and giving Obama’s people the garbage they have dealt out to Republicans for years. Brilliant move this morning to take over Axelrods Magical Mystery Tour while secretly springing the Solyndra pressed on them. Finally, Republicans have learned to beat Democrates at their own game. WAY TO GO MITT! This is the most strategically brilliant move I have seen in this campaign so far. Keep it up….!

  9. Jayde Wyatt says:

By the time Axelrod, arrived, the crowds were equal in size, and screaming at each other. Chants ranged from nebulous — the Obama supporters at one point yelling “Fired up and Ready to go!” while the Romney supporters moaned “Solyndraaaaaa”… with Obama’s supporters chanting “Forward!” and Romney’s supporters responding “Off a cliff!”

Love the “off a cliff” response and seeing Romney supporters actually take their posters and roll them into megaphones to ‘project’ better… Agile and quick thinking! Hats off to our fellow Rominators!

  10. Frozone says:

Hey Rush, if you’re reading this: welcome back to reality ;)

  11. Makeli says:

Anyone want to say Mitt will handle Obama with kid gloves after seeing this epic PWN? Axelrod and his supporters lacked the moral high ground to silence the protesters because of the nature of their own sneak attack. The Romney camp deserves major kudos for giving it back 10 fold to the Obama camp.

    Way to go Team Romney!
