America’s Trickster-in-Chief? The Obama You DON’T KNOW

Barack Obama

A relevant, but perhaps overlooked, aspect of President Obama’s character was briefly mentioned in the thought-provoking documentary film 2016: Obama’s America. While a young teenager, Obama made an enlightening discovery. He figured out a trick – that he had a “knack”. The trick was, if he smiled, was polite, and “didn’t make any sudden moves”, he could manipulate people. Not only that, he could get people to want to help him. It was a “knack” he carefully perfected through the years. It became a trick that would help put him in the White House…

Does America have a Trickster-in-Chief? Who is the real Barack Obama?

Today, The Washington Examiner published an in-depth article peeling back the layers of the Obama you don’t know. In a four-month research effort, many interviews were conducted with Obama supporters and non-supporters in Chicago and elsewhere. In an effort to separate myth from reality, court transcripts, government reports and other official documents were also referenced. I’ve only highlighted some of what was written and urge you to read the entire article.

Over the years and in two autobiographies, Obama has presented himself to the world as many things, including radical community organizer, idealistic civil rights lawyer, dynamic reformer in the Illinois and U.S. senates, and, finally, the cool presidential voice of postpartisan hope and change.

With his air of reasonableness and moderation, he has projected a remarkably likable persona. Even in the midst of a historically dirty campaign for re-election, his likability numbers remain impressive, as seen in a recent AP-GFK Poll that found 53 percent of adults have a favorable view of him.

But beyond the spin and the polls, a starkly different picture emerges. It is a portrait of a man quite unlike his image, not a visionary reformer but rather a classic Chicago machine pol who thrives on rewarding himself and his friends with the spoils of public office, and who uses his position to punish his enemies.

  • Chapter 1 – A childhood of privilege, not hardship:
  • First lady Michelle Obama told the Democratic National Convention that “Barack and I were both raised by families who didn’t have much in the way of money or material possessions.”

It is a claim the president has repeated in his books, on the speech-making circuit and in countless media interviews. By his account, he grew up in a broken home with a single mom, struggled for years as a child in an impoverished Third World country and then was raised by his grandparents in difficult circumstances.

    Uh, not so fast…

Obama’s step-father, Lolo Soetoro, had a coveted job in Indonesia as a government relations officer with Union Oil Co. They lived in Menteng, the most exclusive neighborhood of Jakarta, where economic elites resided. Obama would later live with his grandparents in Hawaii where his grandfather was in sales and his grandmother would become one of the first female vice presidents of a Honolulu bank.

The year Barack joined them, his grandparents moved to a “sleek new 10-story apartment building” close to the prestigious prep school Obama would attend for eight years. The school was one of the most expensive on the island and was a “lush hillside campus overlooking the Waikiki skyline and the Pacific Ocean.”

All the touting he’s done about his community organizing? Obama has never lived in a black neighborhood. He chose to commute 90 miles each way daily to the housing project where he worked.

  • Chapter 2 – The myth of the ‘rock-star professor’:
  • Time magazine gushed in 2008 about Barack Obama’s 12-year tenure as a law lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School, saying, “Within a few years, he had become a rock-star professor with hordes of devoted students.”

Time magazine put lipstick on a pig. Described by some faculty members as “disengaged” and “doing only what was minimally required”, Obama was the third-lowest ranked lecturer at the law school in 1999. Only 23 percent of his students recommended his classes.

The pattern of minimal performance at the Chicago campus was not an exception to the rule for Obama. In the state Senate during the same years he was lecturing, Obama voted “present” nearly 130 times, the most of any legislator in the chamber.

And during his lone term as a U.S. senator, according to Gov Track.us: “From Jan 2005 to Oct 2008, Obama missed 314 of 1300 recorded or roll call votes, which is 24.0%. This is worse than the median of 2.4%.”

  • Chapter 3 – The 1997 speech that launched Obama

Joe ‘Chains-Blunder’ Biden / Does Stephanie Cutter Really Want to Go ‘THERE’?

UPDATE: Jesse Jackson’s daughter, FOX News contributor Santita Jackson, said that Biden’s remarks were “profoundly insulting” and he should apologize. Former Democrat Governor of Virginia Douglas Wilder (first African-America governor since reconstruction) also blasted the Vice President (see end of article).

Our Vice President – Joe Biden.
    (Photo – Carolyn Kaster/AP)

While campaigning in Danville, Virginia on Aug 14, 2012, the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, rode in on his verbal backhoe to further dig himself and Obama into their seemingly bottomless hole. Watch the video (nearly half of Danville is populated by African Americans):

Later that same day, MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell got Stephanie Cutter (Obama’s Deputy Senior Adviser) to sit down with her to talk about ol’ Joe’s mouth and Mitt Romney’s denunciation of Biden’s statement. She squirmed and obfuscated:

Mitchell: “… [L]et’s get back to the question of when you said the president agrees with the sentiments, are you saying that the vice president went too far –“

    Cutter: “No, I’m not”.

Mitchell: “–and that the president does not agree with the words that he used?”

Cutter: “If you look at the entire context of what the Vice President was talking about, he was making a point that if we repeal Wall Street reform which is what Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want to do, we’re going to go back to the days where they’re writing their own rules, and we saw what happened. Taxpayers had to bail them out. We had to spend billions of dollars of taxpayer dollars bailing them out. Now I would think that that, you know, that is a problem for middle class taxpayers. That would hamper their ability to take care of their own finances.”

MITCHELL: “The bottom line that the President agrees with Joe Biden’s sentiments but not his comments?”

CUTTER: “The bottom line is that we have no problem with those comments.”

Governor Romney doesn’t want to “let Wall Street write their own rules” but Team Obama believes if they hamster-wheel this lie over and over, like all the other lies they spout, Americans will believe it.

Does “Romney-is-a-felon” Cutter really want to go there – talking about taxpayer bailouts?

Hmm. Let’s talk about GM – headed for bankruptcy again? Or, how about that $535 million of vanished taxpayer money Obama showered on Solyndra?

Have you heard about A123 Systems?

It’s a green company based in Waltham, MA, that makes hybrid/electric car batteries. In 2009, A123 was handed a quarter BILLION grant by Obama. The company also received another $135 million in grants and tax breaks from Michigan. A123 also sucked up another $30 federal million for a wind energy whim. Their stock peaked at $25.77 per share. It’s now at 45 CENTS per share. In July, company officials said they only had five months of operating cash. Get this: A Chinese auto parts maker, Wanxiang Group, is investing up to $465 million in the broke company – buying A123 (owning 80% of the firm) for pennies on our dollars. Obama used OUR money to bankroll green technology which has ended up in CHINA’s hands.

Other Obama green energy companies receiving taxpayer money who have stuck it to us: Tesla – $465 million, Fiskar Automotive – $529 million, Ener1 – $118.5 million, Beacon Power – $43 million, Abound Solar – $400 million, Amonix Solar – $15.4 million DOE grant plus another $9.5 million in federal tax credits, Energy Conversion Devices & United Solar Ovonic LLC – $13.3 million tax credit, Evergreen Solar – $125 million plus $58 million from Massachusetts, Mountain Plaza, Inc. – $424,000, Spectrawatt – $500,000, Azure Dynamics – couldn’t find exact amount, but MILLIONS lost, and Solar Trust of America – $2.1 billion.

Troubled green companies for which taxpayers could be on the hook:
    Ecotality
    BrightSource Energy
    Cogentrix Energy

A few other companies receiving Obama stimulus money or tax breaks:
    Babcock & Brown,
    Granite Reliable Power
    Johnson Controls
    NextEra Energy
    Nissan
    NRG Solar
    Olsen’s Crop Service
    Range Fuels
    Schneider Electric
    Thompson River Power LLC
    Willard & Kelsey Solar Group

What about all those “shovel ready” jobs Obama touted to help push through his stimulus bill? Well, the shovels weren’t ready.

The half of America that actually pays taxes are on the hook for Obama’s $787 BILLION Recovery Act Bill – better known as the Stimulus Stinker DUD. He did that to us. And don’t forget, in January 2011, Obama whined and pouted for another $447 BILLION – which, thankfully, he didn’t get.

    But, I digress…

Back to ol’ Joe. American Crossroads Super PAC reminded us today why Biden is good for the Romney/Ryan ticket:

    Run, Joe. Run

It’s been a bad week for Team Obama.

Romney Ruffles Obama’s Feathers: “Sauce for Goose is Good for Gander”

“Sauce for the goose is good for the gander.”
    - Mitt Romney (responding to Obama campaign tactics)
    Illustrator/Rahul Vyas

    We’re not surprised…

    Mitt Romney is no namby-pamby.

All the distractions being slung at Romney by Team Obama – from dogs, to misogynism, to the p.u. of private-equity, to The Gov’s good refusal to dump Trump – has voters taking notice.

The Gov’s deft ruffling of the Obama/Axelrod feathers proves he’s more than ready for the challenges from our Choomer-in-Chief.

From Victor Davis Hanson, National Review Online (NRO):

    Romney Fights Back
He has no intention of running a model, but losing, campaign.

What to make of the puerile back and forth? It would be easy to tsk-tsk the shallowness of such kindergarten name-calling, which diverts attention from domestic and foreign policies. Or political observers could argue that the Obama campaign is successfully creating all sorts of diversions from a dismal economic record; in each instance Romney’s handlers are forced to take their eyes off 40 months of 8 percent–plus unemployment or 50 million people now on food stamps.

But there is a far better lesson from the Romney counterpunching: Apparently his campaign is not going to be a repeat of Mike Dukakis’s smiley-face efforts when knocked silly by the late Lee Atwater’s no-holds-barred management of George H. W. Bush’s 1988 campaign. Nor will 2012 prove anything like 2008, when John McCain took all sorts of issues off the table — from Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers to scrutiny of Obama’s memoirs. Note in this regard the frequency with which an increasingly desperate Obama is now praising the McCain campaign, in contrast to the supposed extremism of Romney — as if an incumbent president George H. W. Bush would have admonished a “war room” Bill Clinton to emulate the more noble tone of Dukakis’s failed effort.

Romney’s ostensible point, of course, is not to allow scurrilous stories to linger in the press. And he probably wants to create deterrence by warning the Obama campaign that for each petty story of a teenager pushed down by Romney a half-century ago, there will be a middle-school girl whom a younger Obama rudely pushed away — and that was according to Obama’s own telling.

Anyone who doubts Romney’s capacity to fight has foolishly underestimated him (and we heard plenty of that during the primaries):

But the real significance of firing back is not just to balance impressions with the general public or to warn Team Obama of the boomerang effect each time they offer up a new diversion. Instead, it is to remind the Republican base that Romney intends to go all out, and would rather win a bloody fight than lose in noble aloofness.

Yes, “sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.“ “Where are the jobs? Where are the jobs?” “Solyndra! Solyndra!

So when Romney refused to disown the mercurial Trump, he sent quite the opposite message from McCain’s or Dole’s — something like “I don’t need the associate of Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, and Tony Rezko to tell me with whom to appear.” Apparently, each time Obama issues a “How dare you?” Romney is not going to point fingers at his own backers, but rather will fire back with a “How dare you dare me?”

Romney is taking the gamble that whatever damage may be done by his overzealous supporters is hardly commensurate with the damage of sanctimoniously castigating them in order to win approval from the press and the Obama campaign. In other words, Romney would prefer winning in 2012 to being praised by liberals in 2016 for running a model, but losing, campaign.

That fact alone — not litmus tests of his conservatism or assessments of his style — will be the dominating factor in the Romney campaign, and it will make 2012 quite unlike 2008.

Obama is realizing Romney won’t be goaded into responding to his team’s Alinsky honks and hisses.

He doesn’t go on wild goose chases.

    Romney is no namby-pamby.

He knows when and how to launch some flight-stopping sauce on the squawking high-flying goose.

President Obama’s ‘Closer’ Came Out of the Bullpen Too Early

I love baseball. I love the strategy employed by managers to attempt to control every facet of the game. I love it when things work out in their favor thinking that somehow their decision to pitch their ace right hander against the pinch hitter that hits .106 against righties works out in their favor. Maybe I just like having the odds in my favor.

    Leland Bruce

I recall as an aspiring Little League all-star my father taking me out to the school yard daily to throw painted hard balls at me and command that I scream the color of the paint as I swung at his mighty fastball. Try having a dad that is 6’6” and throws a fastball at 80 mph at you when you are still finger painting in 4th period and have feelings of exhilaration for 6th period Spelling Bee’s. Talk about strategy! My dad was just putting the numbers in his favor to ensure that his son could hit a fastball. Excellent execution of a flawless strategy except for the night sweats that I have had for the past 40 years as I see orange, red and blue colored Rawlings hardballs flying past my head while my feet are cemented into the batter’s box!

Yes, I love baseball because one of the key concepts in baseball is to keep your eye on the ball. This artful concept works in politics as well, but since campaign managers wish to employ strategy to control the outcome of the game, oftentimes we are led to take our eye off of the ball. President Obama and his legion of campaign managers, media hacks and public puppet followers are doing all within their power to divert our eyes from the ball and maintain our focus on the pretty new uniforms, the front office, the visiting team and most of all ‘free cap’ night. Free caps for everyone! Hey, that guy has 2 caps! Give me one of yours! Pay your Fair Share! But I bought this one with my own money yells the capitalist fan. Your money is my money comes the reply.

I realize that I am 5,500 miles from home plate, but I cannot believe what I read on print media and what I hear on news outlets. Talk about taking your eye off the ball. Bain Capital? Hey Axelrod, get that one out on our news outlets and see if it sticks. Sorry Barry but Bill Clinton just praised the private equity industry! If that’s his ploy for Hillary 2016 I’ll have his head he screams from Honeywell. OK, retraction, Bill just said you will win by a landslide…. Ann Romney’s blouse? Governor Romney’s record as Governor? The Republican war on women? Dog vacations? 50 year old high school pranks? Willard Romney’s birth certificate? Donald Trump visits? Pay your fair share? Romney doesn’t relate to the middle class? I have eaten cotton candy at the ballpark before but the hyperbole spewing forth from these minions has more air and artificial syrup in it than you could fit into the San Onofre nuclear power plant. Don’t say nuclear Jay Carney, the Left hates that word. I cannot wait for the religious barbs, the man is too handsome, he was a draft dodger, his boys served “Mormon” missions, Ann doesn’t work (Oops, already floated that one and got slammed…… “I know three Hilary Rosen’s; to which do you refer” says Jay Carney… Seriously Mr. President, you didn’t see that question coming?). Mark my words, these curve balls will be forthcoming and will not strike home. Unfortunately for Mr. Obama, the Romney camp and most Americans have their eye on the ball. And I don’t really care what color that Rawlings is painted or how fast it is hurling toward home plate. The message on the ball is simple:

    The Economy.

I have to hand it to the Obama administration. They play smart. When your middle relief pitching breaks down you have got to go to your closer and put strategy back in your favor. For those of you who don’t know, this administration only has one closer. It’s called the Bureau of Labor Statistics (“BLS”) and this supposed non-partisan group holds in large part the future of Sir Debt Accumulator in their hands. You see it’s this group that produces the unemployment figures every month as we all anxiously hold our breath to see what falsified number they will actually produce. Unfortunately for Team Obama, the BLS has been more like Mitch Williams of the 90’s as a closer than Mariano Rivera of the 00’s. And much like Rivera’s torn ACL which will impact the Yankees run for the pennant this year, the BLS could become Obama’s Achilles Heel before November. Not that he hasn’t tried to pay off the umpires, hide sandpaper in his mitt (wow what a play on words) or pray for a rain out because he has. Well, maybe not the pray part because he usually golfs on Sundays. Sorry I digress. But yes it’s true, the BLS has been warming up in the bull pen for the past several months and you can bank on the idea that Team Obama will give them the ball at the end of the game. It’s really the only way that they have any chance to win the game. Let me explain…. (more…)

Romney vs. Axelrod: A Tale of Two Pressers

I’m excited to mention that Rush read one of our MRC tweets on the air today. I’m not posting it here on the top because it’s part of this story. To see the tweet he read and hear the audio be sure to continue reading the story below. Thanks, Nate.

    —————————————————————————

Very interesting news today has many heretofore Romney-doubting GOPers taking courage in the swift, hard-hitting capabilities of the Romney campaign. Two “surprise” press conferences were held today, by Romney and Axelrod, but only one ended up being an actual surprise. Both were dominated by the Romney camp. These events happened early enough today that they were actually discussed on Rush and Hannity today, and will certainly make your evening news.

Part One: The Axelrod press conference

    • A surprise visit by Chief Obama strategist David Axelrod to Boston was publicly announced just last night. Purpose of his “presser”: Dis Romney’s record as Governor.
    • Oddly, the short notice is somehow enough time for CNN to arrange to have a live feed available. Team Romney springs into action to round up a large group of protesters armed with big signs, and chants.
    • Romney supporters are waiting on the steps of the capital building as Obama’s advance Team arrives to set up. (Pics below)
    • Throughout the presser attention is obviously stolen by protesters as they run through a series of chants including: Solyndra, Five more months, We want Mitt, Where are the jobs, Broken record, and more. Axelrod actually responds to protestors at one point with the phrase “You can’t handle the truth.”
    • Big win for Team Romney as news reports focus on the protestors rather than Axelrod’s anti-Romney message.

Part Two: Romney holds surprise press conference in front of Solyndra

    • On the other side of the country Team Romney has the entire press corp on a bus with Mitt on board as well. The press are told only that they are going to a secret location and they will be there in one hour.
    • Less than an hour after Axelrod’s presser ends CNN (and others) break news that Romney will hold press conference at Solyndra.
    • Mitt highlights the failure of Solyndra as a symbol of Obama’s administration and calls it a huge conflict of interest by Obama.
    • Conservatives in the blogosphere and on twitter cheer Team Romney for being two steps ahead of the competition

This is one of those days that is great for following news events on twitter. I will enclose only a small number of the great tweets, pictures and videos coming from today’s events. More below the fold.

Romney Ad: “Obama Gives Taxpayer $$ to Big Donors, Watches Them Lose It”

In an unprecedented action from a sitting president, President Obama lurched straight out of the campaign gate a few weeks ago with a barrage of negative ads against Mitt Romney. At every opportunity, he headbutts private equity/venture capitalists and Romney’s 80% success rate at Bain Capital. Obama says this is his reelection focus. (Don’t look America… Obama raised funds from a private equity group he previously attacked.) The once-resounding Obama message of hope and change isn’t even whispered anymore.

You know it’s bad when even left-leaning ‘Face the Nation’s’ Bob Schieffer notices Obama’s negativity.

Romney’s new web ad, released today, shows he’s noticed, too. It targets the real cause of Obama’s headaches – his borrow-and-tax policies which have lead to… nowhere: Solyndra, First Solar, ECOtality, and SunPower.

    Not Even Half

    The facts, Ma’am:

The Obama Administration Loaned Over Half A Billion Dollars To Solyndra – Which Later Went Bankrupt And Laid Off 1,100 Employees.

“In a blow to the Obama administration’s efforts to create green jobs, solar-cell maker Solyndra announced Wednesday that it will close its remaining Fremont factory, layoff its 1,100 employees and file for bankruptcy. The news marked an abrupt end for a company once considered among the most innovative in a fast-changing industry. The bankruptcy also represents a high-profile failure for a federal stimulus program that gives loan guarantees to green-tech manufacturers. Solyndra was the first company to win one of the guarantees, receiving $535 million in 2009 to build its second factory in Fremont less than a mile from the company’s original plant.” (David R. Baker and Carolyn Said, “Solyndra Closes Fremont Plant – Stimulus Hopes Dim,” San Francisco Chronicle, 9/1/11)

The Obama Administration Provided More Than $3 Billion In Loan Guarantees That Benefitted First Solar – A Company That Recently Announced Layoffs And Hit Record Lows In Stock Value.

“First Solar. The Obama administration provided First Solar with more than $3 billion in loan guarantees for power plants in Arizona and California. According to a Bloomberg Businessweek report last week, the company ‘fell to a record low in Nasdaq Stock Market trading May 4 after reporting $401 million in restructuring costs tied to firing 30 percent of its workforce.’” (Marc A. Thiessen, “Forget Bain — Obama’s Public-Equity Record Is The Real Scandal,” The Washington Post, 5/24/12)

After Receiving Approximately $126 Million In Taxpayer Money, ECOtality Has “Incurred More Than $45 Million In Losses.”

The Obama administration gave ECOtality $126.2 million in taxpayer money in 2009 for, among other things, the installation of 14,000 electric car chargers in five states. Obama even hosted the company’s president, Don Karner, in the first lady’s box during the 2010 State of the Union address as an example of a stimulus success story. According to ECOtality’s own SEC filings, the company has since incurred more than $45 million in losses and has told the federal government, ‘We may not achieve or sustain profitability on a quarterly or annual basis in the future.’” (Marc A. Thiessen, “Forget Bain — Obama’s Public-Equity Record Is The Real Scandal,” The Washington Post, 5/24/12)

ECOtality Is Currently “Under Investigation For Insider Trading.” “Worse, according to CBS News the company is ‘under investigation for insider trading,’ and Karner has been subpoenaed ‘for any and all documentation surrounding the public announcement of the first Department of Energy grant to the company.’” (Marc A. Thiessen, “Forget Bain — Obama’s Public-Equity Record Is The Real Scandal,” The Washington Post, 5/24/12)

“A Company Called SunPower Got A $1.2 Billion Loan Guarantee From The Obama Administration…”

“This is just the tip of the iceberg. A company called SunPower got a $1.2 billion loan guarantee from the Obama administration, and as of January, the company owed more than it was worth.” (Marc A. Thiessen, “Forget Bain — Obama’s Public-Equity Record Is The Real Scandal,” The Washington Post, 5/24/12)

In 2011, SunPower Lost More Than Half A Billion Dollars And Announced Layoffs.

“Now, San Jose’s SunPower, another solar panel maker, has hit rough waters — a $370 million quarterly loss — which will trigger layoffs and the exit of two top executives. SunPower CEO [Werner] thinks a turn-around won’t happen overnight. ‘We see this as a year to maybe two years, and then we see significant demand, a resumption in significant demand growth,’ Werner said. But the slowdown in sales and a flood of low-cost panels coming in from China have extended SunPower’s losses this year past a half-billion dollars.” (David Louie, “CA’s Solar Industry Continues To Show Signs Of Distress,” KGO-TV [San Francisco, CA], 11/4/11)

► Does Fisker ring a bell? (updated)

Does the Fisker investment seem like a terrible investment? Absolutely. Is this a clear cut case of “crony capitalism” as Romney says it is? Let’s investigate.

    Read about it here.

“$16.4 Billion Of The $20.5 Billion In Loans Granted As Of Sept. 15 Went To Companies Either Run By Or Primarily Owned By Obama Financial Backers.”

“In the 1705 government-backed-loan program, for example, $16.4 billion of the $20.5 billion in loans granted as of Sept. 15 went to companies either run by or primarily owned by Obama financial backers-individuals who were bundlers, members of Obama’s National Finance Committee, or large donors to the Democratic Party.” (Peter Schweizer, “Obama Campaign Backers And Bundlers Rewarded With Green Grants And Loans,” Newsweek, 11/12/11)

The Energy Department’s Inspector General Found That Contracts Were Steered To “Friends And Family.”

“The Department of Energy’s inspector general, Gregory Friedman, who was not a political appointee, chastised the alternative-energy loan and grant programs for their absence of ‘sufficient transparency and accountability.’ He has testified that contracts have been steered to ‘friends and family.’” (Peter Schweizer, “Obama Campaign Backers And Bundlers Rewarded With Green Grants And Loans,” Newsweek, 11/12/11)

Romney’s Op-Ed: Obama, Green Jobs, Cronyism / End American Decline With Romney’s 59!

Mitt Romney’s op-ed, published a couple of days ago in The Orange County Register, takes a specific look at Obama’s penchant for spending huge amounts of our hard-earned money on losers – specifically, green jobs. He basically writes that the United States government is a rotten venture capitalist – fostering crony capitalism and “outright corruption”.

Gov Romney also points out that, among other things, his own jobs creation plan “reduces the burden imposed by government” and makes our tax code “simpler, flatter, and fairer.”

His plan makes the USA competitive again.

We need an environment for jobs
Obama’s ill-starred support for green jobs shows why government shouldn’t be a venture capitalist.
    By Mitt Romney
    Oct 24, 2011

First, the good news: President Barack Obama has finally created some “green jobs.” Now for the bad news: They are not in the United States, but in Finland.

The creation of environmentally friendly jobs has been at the top of Barack Obama’s policy agenda since coming into office. With the first of his now many jobs plans, the President set out to fulfill his campaign promise of spending $150 billion to create ten million green jobs. Alas, things didn’t quite worked out as planned.

First came Solyndra, the solar-panel maker backed by a major Obama campaign-funds bundler, which President Obama hailed as a “true engine of economic growth.” It turned out to be a true engine of bankruptcy. Even as the administration trumpeted its accomplishments, the firm was careening toward insolvency. Taxpayers were left holding a $500 million bill, and the firm was left facing an FBI investigation. Nonetheless, at least one Solyndra-linked fundraiser is helping to organize Tuesday’s presidential cash call in San Francisco.

Now we may be in for more of the same. The Obama administration has shoveled $1 billion out the door to two California-based electric car manufacturers. Fisker Automotive got a $529 million loan from the Department of Energy; Tesla got $465 million. President Obama has hailed such subsidies as a “historic opportunity to ensure that the next generation of fuel-efficient cars and trucks are made in America.”

Alas, like Solyndra, these loans are turning out to be historic opportunities to line the pockets of major campaign fundraisers. Fisker investors, including Al Gore himself, have donated more than $1 million to political campaigns – primarily Democrats. Tesla, for its part, has financial backing from a fundraiser who bundled hundreds of thousands of dollars for the President’s campaign; Tesla’s CEO is also a major Democratic donor who has poured money into Obama’s campaign coffers.

Tesla’s next vehicle is expected to list for $57,400. Fisker’s car, already a year behind schedule, will cost $97,000. “We have a history of losses and we expect significant increases in our costs and expenses to result in continuing losses for at least the foreseeable future,” says Tesla’s most recent quarterly filing.

And neither firm has created many jobs. So far, approximately 100 workers are employed by Fisker in Wilmington, Del., while an additional 500 are actually assembling the cars in Finland. Tesla’s record is only slightly better. Even these few jobs may be illusory: studies of Europe’s green job experiments have found that each new green job destroys several other jobs elsewhere in the economy.

Last summer, the Government Accountability Office, Congress’s investigative arm, sounded alarm bells about potential abuses in the issuance of green-job loans, warning that the Obama administration’s Department of Energy had “treated applicants inconsistently, favoring some and disadvantaging others.” Congress should investigate carefully how so much taxpayer money was spent so poorly on behalf of so many donors.

But there are larger lessons from this sorry story. First, the U.S. government shouldn’t be playing venture capitalist. It’s not merely that government bureaucrats are bad at picking winners. The very process invites cronyism and outright corruption.

Second, as Fisker’s decision to manufacture in Finland makes clear, the U.S. economy is not struggling for lack of government spending. It is struggling for lack of competitiveness. Instead of President Obama’s doomed strategy of creating jobs that are good for the environment, we need a strategy to create an environment that is good for jobs.

My plan for jobs and economic growth does just that with the goal of ensuring that no advanced manufacturer ever sees Finland as a better place than the United States to set up shop.
