Romney: Obama’s Comments To Medvedev Are Very Troubling (Video), Open Letter / More Questions

Obama bared his soul in Seoul yesterday.

Except, he didn’t mean to.

It was a flub.

A big one.

Speaking to soon-to-be-booted-out Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, a hot mic caught Obama revealing a secret agenda for Russia (after claiming he’ll be re-elected this fall):

Obama: “On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him [Putin] to give me space.”
Medvedev: “Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you…”
Obama: “This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.”
Medvedev: “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir, and I stand with you.”

(Did you catch the body language between the two presidents…?)

Obviously, Obama and Medvedev didn’t know the world would hear their exchange. By the way, Putin (recently elected under dubious procedures) is expected to appoint Medvedev as Russia’s Prime Minister.

Governor Romney addressed Obama’s telling revelation yesterday while speaking to an audience in San Diego, CA and talking to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. Hugh Hewitt also got The Gov’s take on it. LISTEN TO AUDIO of Hewitt’s interview here.

HH: So the President says, Governor Romney, this is my last election, after my election I have more flexibility. And President Medvedev says I understand, I will transmit this information to Vladimir. Your reaction, Governor Romney?

MR: Well, it is revealing, it is alarming, it’s troubling, it suggests that the President has a very different agenda with the Russians than he’s willing to tell the American people. And for that reason alone, we ought to vote him out of office. This is a very disconcerting development.

HH: What do you think he has in mind, Governor, when he says I will be flexible? Is it missile defense? It is the number of our warheads? Is it Iran? What is he talking about?

MR: Well, he says missile defense, but we’re talking about one of those two issues, either missile defense or warheads. What he’s done on warheads, of course, with the new START Treaty, he took warheads down to 1,500 on strategic nuclear weapons. Of course, the Russians were already at 1,500. They didn’t have to have any reductions. We were at 2,200. So the only reduction in his missile defense treaty was a reduction at the U.S. level. And of course, he ignored the tactical nuclear weapons, which are of course the same nukes. They’re just on smaller rockets. He ignored that, where Russia has an advantage of five or ten to one over us. So this is a president who continues to try and appease and accommodate, and believes that the best interests of America are to bow to the interests of Russia. And it’s very, very troubling, and I mean, I’m very disturbed by this. I hope the American people understand that what we heard from the President is revealing about his character in terms of what he tells the American people, and revealing about his direction and sentiment with regards to Russian, which is after all our number one geopolitical foe. They don’t represent a military threat to us at the present, but they oppose us at every turn in the United Nations, and oppose us in every one of our efforts, whether in Iraq or Iran, North Korea. They’re on the other side. And for him to be cozying up with them with regards to missile defense is simply unacceptable.

HH: How do you expect this aside from the President will be understood in Poland and the Czech Republic, and Ukraine, and Georgia, and other front line states facing a newly-expansive Russia?

MR: Well, I think our friends around the world have been reevaluating their relationship with the United States, in part because of this president’s treatment of friends relative to the treatment of enemies. I’ve heard from more than one foreign leader that it seems to be preferable to be an American foe than an American friend to this president.

HH: Now Governor Romney, the press will of course attempt to dismiss this as not a big issue. Will this remain a front line issue? And do you think that the President has got to spell out with great detail what he has in mind here?

MR: You know, I don’t think he can recover from it, to tell you the truth. I mean, I think he will try and spin something. But I don’t know how you spin from an open mic, where you’re talking about having more flexibility after the election, which means quite clearly that you don’t want the American people to hear what you’re really planning on doing, and that you’re going to be able to do more when you no longer are accountable to the American people. You know, the mainstream media may try and put this to bed, but we’re going to keep it alive and awake. And we’re going to keep hammering him with it all the way through November.

Floodgates Open: Support for Romney from Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Alaska

Floodgates of support are really opening now for Mitt Romney…

Today, social and fiscal conservative Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn penned a strong op-ed supporting Romney. GOP Representatives (32 of them!) in Massachusetts and Alaska Lt. Gov Mead Treadwell also issued well-muscled letters of support. Eric Cantor also stepped up to the plate for Romney.

It’s clear.

They all believe Romney’s years of private sector work and leadership skills seal the deal. Unquestionably, they feel Romney is ready to be wrapped in the presidential mantle.

UPDATE - Add former First Lady Barbara Bush’s name to the list. She recorded a robo call message for Mitt that is playing throughout Vermont:

Senator Coburn:

I’m proud to support Romney because he is a leader. What Romney has done in his 25 years in the private sector is precisely what we need a president to do in Washington. Romney has done hard things. He has turned businesses around, told people hard truths about what needed to be done, inspired confidence and overcome excuses.”

Mitt Romney Best Equipped To Solve Problems Facing Our Nation
By Sen. Tom Coburn
The Oklahoman
March 4, 2012

Sen Tom Coburn

America faces the greatest challenges of any in my lifetime. Our debt is now the size of our entire economy. If we don’t change course in the near future, we will face an economic catastrophe far worse than our recent recession.

At the same time, we’re facing a crisis of leadership in Washington. The problems and solutions are widely understood — and far from impossible to implement — yet our so-called leaders have shown little interest in solving problems. President Obama campaigned as a transformational leader, yet he has rejected transformational solutions such as the Simpson-Bowles plan that gave Washington a framework for averting a debt crisis.

Elections are about choices. This November, the most important choice facing the American people will be whether we will demand a solution and avert a debt crisis or whether we will continue to accept the status quo and hope for the best. I’m confident the vast majority of Americans on both sides of the aisle want a solution. The next choice, then, is deciding who is best qualified to enact a solution.

In life, and especially politics, our choices are seldom perfect and often difficult. But it is critically important to make a choice and support the person who is best equipped to solve the urgent problems before us. In my view, that person is Mitt Romney.

From my experience, Washington tends to be divided between two groups — leaders and career politicians. Leaders tend to have a wealth of real-world experience outside of politics and are in office to give rather than take something from their position. Career politicians, on the other hand, mean well but are ill-equipped to solve problems. Their greatest skill is getting re-elected.

From Romney’s Press Office – MA Republican Reps (32 signatures!):

If Mitt gets to the White House and has a chance to do for the country what he did for Massachusetts, we will see a turnaround in this country unlike any we have seen before.

Massachusetts Republican Representatives Stand with Mitt

Click on map to enlarge.

Over the course of this election season, we members of the Massachusetts Republican Legislative Caucus, have watched and listened as our former Governor’s record has been scrutinized by his rivals and by the national media. Now it is our turn to speak.

Republicans in Massachusetts never had a stronger leader, a greater defender, or a better friend in the State House than Mitt Romney.

Let’s start with the economy. When Mitt was elected Governor, Massachusetts was on the verge of financial disaster. Workers across the state were being laid off at the rate of thousands a month.

Our state budget was bleeding red ink, and Democratic politicians were proclaiming that only tax increases could fill the gap. Raising taxes, of course, was not Governor Romney’s way. Quite the opposite. With the same energy and intelligence he brings to every challenge he faces, he brought efficiency to our state government. He streamlined our budget and cut unneeded programs.

Without raising taxes—indeed, he cut taxes nineteen times—he balanced the budget every year of his term. By the end of four years, he had turned a $3 billion deficit into a $2 billion rainy-day fund. With the state government’s finances in order, the economy picked up steam. Unemployment at the end of Mitt’s term was 4.7 percent, a rate the state envies now.

But the economy was not the only realm where Mitt was a leader. He cracked down on illegal immigration by vetoing an in-state tuition bill and by authorizing state troopers to detain people who had entered the country illegally. When Democrats caved to the teachers unions and sought to impose a one-year moratorium on publicly-funded charter schools, Mitt successfully turned back their efforts.

Guest Submission: Regarding Newt Gingrich

I have not personally written much here on this blog about Speaker Gingrich, be he is one that has from the beginning been on the bottom of my list of candidates I would support. My reasons for not supporting him have been my own and I never felt to share them since I never thought Gingrich would surge as high as he has in the national polls. While it is true that his support is currently waning, it’s my belief that he still has the greatest potential against Romney due to his strong support in South Carolina.

The following letter came to me in an email from Grant Hallstrom of Southern California. Though I didn’t write it encapsulates very well my personal thoughts and feelings on Speaker Gingrich, so I thought I’d post it here. Before this came to me Grant had sent it out to more than 1000 of his contacts and received many positive responses for his letter. I’d like say thanks to Grant for reaching out to so many people to help Mitt Romney, and for letting us post the letter here on our site.

I do not know your political affiliations, and do not want to offend anyone, but I feel the need to speak up. It is not my normal practice to point out negative attributes about political candidates, but I am amazed at how gullible so many Republicans are in buying the re-invention of Newt Gingrich from the bombastic, dishonest, ego maniac into an older, wiser and gentler statesman. I don’t buy it!

I can understand how uninformed people would be impressed with this smart, knowledgeable person with a strong personality and good communication skills who says the right things, but we have a track record on this guy to put things into perspective.

Gov. Mitt Romney’s First Letter to Us Since Forming an Exploratory Committee

As a donor to Gov. Mitt Romney in the past, I received this letter in the mail and altered it to apply to all of us. It’s obviously very important that Gov. Romney raises a lot of money to catch up as quickly as possible to the enormous and potentially unprecedented campaign President Obama is assembling.

There has been a lot of speculation lately about the 2012 Presidential Election.

I have officially taken the first step to run for President of the United States by filing a Presidential Campaign Exploratory Committee.

Obviously, running for President is a huge undertaking and it’s not a decision I take lightly.

In this campaign, I need the strong early support of friends like you.

As part of this exploratory process, I am gauging support and need to know if you’re behind me. What we do in these early weeks will lay the groundwork for a successful campaign.

Will you do me the honor of pledging your early support to our Exploratory Committee by contributing $20.12, $50, $100, or some other amount?

I believe in America — in free enterprise, capitalism, limited government, and federalism. I believe in the American dream. I believe that the principles that made America the leader of the world today are the very principles that will keep America the leader of the world tomorrow. And I wholeheartedly believe that America needs unapologetic conservative leadership.

Our country is facing an economic crises and an increasingly uncertain world. Our President has failed us. It’s become painfully clear that he does not believe in America and that lack of faith in our American values and way of life has made us weaker and less free.

I do not apologize for America because I “Believe in America”!

Once I officially announce my decision to run, we will need to hit the ground running. The best way to do that is to have a head start on fundraising.

Establishing the Exploratory Committee is the first step in the process of becoming a candidate. I am excited to embark on this journey and need you by my side every step of the way.

Sincerely,
Mitt Romney

Show Mitt the Money!

Mitt Romney has announced his Exploratory Committee! Though we don’t know the details we are certain that a big kick-off fundraiser will occur some time in May. In 2007, Gov. Romney’s campaign raised a record-breaking $6.5 million in a single day! Can we help break Mitt’s record this time around? We want to do our part to help make this a huge event for Mitt. PLEASE click here to make your pledge and we’ll contact you on that hopefully record-making day so you can be a part of history!

Mitt Romney’s Best Letter to His Donors so Far this Year

Mitt’s sent out some inspirational letters to his donors this year, but this one is my favorite so far:

How does it feel to know that you’re helping throw a farewell party for the liberal Harry Reid-Nancy Pelosi agenda?

As one of my Free and Strong America PAC’s most generous members, you’re playing a big part in our efforts to reclaim majority control of Washington.

Thank you for that. Thank you for standing with me.

I have been incredibly busy traveling the country campaigning for our conservative candidates and meeting with voters. It is exciting and exhausting and inspiring and I won’t let up until we win. I know you won’t, either.

The other day, someone asked me why there is so much more passion surrounding this election than in other election years. It’s because people realize that Obama and the liberal majorities in Congress are taking our country down the wrong path.

The liberal politicians are just not listening to Americans.

Barack Obama’s approach is putting in jeopardy the very values that have made America the freest and strongest nation on earth. Liberals in Washington and in capitols across the country are attempting to smother the quintessential American values of freedom, opportunity, and innovation.

We will not let them do it

We’re doing what we conservatives have always done: standing up for our values. But more than that, we are standing up for America. For our troops. For our families. For our businesses. For our future.

The liberls promised that they would “fundamentally change the way Washington works.” They misled us. They are trying to change the way America works.

We will not let them do it.

What they believe and what the American people believe are not the same. The liberals believe in spending and borrowing on behalf of my generation even though it will bankrupt my children’s and granchildren’s generations. They believe that government knows best how to care for your health — not you, not your doctor. They believe that the rewards of success should be taken from the person who created them and given to those who did not.

That’s not how America works. It’s not what our Founding Fathers intended and it’s not what the American people want.

Right now, the liberals are running scared as they see their majority in jeopardy, so they are doing what they do best: spending money hand over fist. They are furiously pumping money into campaigns across the country to ensure their liberal candidates win and they can maintain control in Washington.

We will not let them do it.

The toughest phase of the campaign is now upon us and I’d be grateful if you give an additional contribution to help us elect conservative candidates.

Thank you for standing up for America.

Sincerely,
Mitt Romney

A Letter from Ann Romney

Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe, but Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner.

This is a busy time of year for all of us. But it’s also a wonderful time for families to get together, socialize with friends, and renew old acquaintances.

Now we know it’s not the easiest time of year to be asking for your generous financial support, as we’re sure your attention is starting to turn toward buying gifts for your loved ones for the holidays. But we’ve come up with a great way at Mitt’s PAC for you to help us and help yourself.

Holiday Package

Holiday Package

The Free and Strong America PAC recently launched a new online store where you can obtain all sorts of fun gear, for yourself and for all your gift-giving needs. And here’s the best part — 100% of every purchase you make at the store counts as a contribution to the PAC, which will go directly to helping Mitt stay active on the political scene. The store makes it easier than ever before to order multiple items and quantities, as well as send gifts directly to your friends and family.

This month, in addition to fleece pullovers, t-shirts, hats, and many of the other items that have been offered in the past, the PAC is also featuring limited edition “Holiday Packages,” from which you can choose to get a Free and Strong America PAC knit blanket and his-and-her mug set for a contribution of $150, the mug set alone for $50, or a single mug for $30. The knit blanket is a great way to keep warm as we head into the winter months!

We wish you and your family happy and safe holidays and we look forward to working with you in the year ahead.

Best,

Ann Romney

P.S. Even if you don’t want to contribute toward official PAC gear, we hope you will nevertheless consider making a contribution toward our efforts today. We need to start preparing now for 2010.
