What They’re Saying About the Presidential Duel in Denver – Obama: “Four Snore Years”

The first debate is over!

It was remarkable…

for Romney.

The day after the first presidential debate of 2012 in Denver, CO, this headline from the Boston Herald says it all… (Oct 4, 2012)

I was going to begin this article by saying Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama went eyeball to eyeball last night in Denver, but that wasn’t the case. It was a night of Romney focusing on Obama, looking directly into his eyes, while Obama’s eyes were oft-times focused… downward… as if he was willing the lectern to morph into his teleprompter. And, in my opinion, as if he knew Romney was on to him. The Boston Herald headline above encapsulates the evening.

Romney seemed to relish the opportunity to speak to Americans without the filter of the nefarious news media. He was the man we know and admire – very well-prepared, precise, focused, in control, filled with conviction and compassion, showed humor, aggressive while affable, and was completely at ease.

Obama was flat, subdued, distracted, passive, at times churlish and bewildered that his royal-highness-stature-and-personality wasn’t cutting the mustard. At one point Obama asked moderator Jim Lehrer to move off a topic (a first!).

From the get-go, Obama attempted to set the campaign narrative as not what has happened in the last four years, but what will happen if he’s given four MORE years. He couldn’t be standing on shakier, flakier ground.

Some Obama proponents today are claiming moderator Jim Lehrer was weak or favored Romney. Not so. Obama was given four more minutes of speaking time – over Romney. The Governor delivered far more substance in his allotted time than Obama with his extra OVERtime. And, Lehrer appeared at times to attempt to coach Obama via his questions, trying to prompt him to give a more cogent response.

Last night’s debate aptly illustrated by Gary Varvel, Oct 4, 2012

Clash of the titans? The only titan present in this race is Mitt Romney.

I’m delighted at what is being said about the Duel in Denver (from Mitt Romney Press):

Obama Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter: “And I Think That Mitt Romney, Yes, He Absolutely Wins The Preparation. And He Wins The Style Points.” (CNN’s “CNN Live,” 10/3/12)

ABC News’ Jake Tapper: “It Was Not A Strong Performance By [President Obama].” ABC’s JAKE TAPPER: “Well, I’ve covered President Obama for about six or seven years now and I’ve seen him inspire crowds of tens of thousands and then I also recall the summer of 2007 when he was listless and flat and uninspired and his campaign manager had to knock some sense in him and get him back in the game. Unfortunately for the Obama campaign that’s the Obama I saw on the stage tonight. It was not a strong performance by him.” (ABC, 10/3/12)

Bloomberg’s Joshua Green: “Dominating…” “On Wednesday night, Mitt Romney attempted a hostile takeover of the presidential campaign … dominating President Obama.” (Bloomberg, 10/3/12)

Politico’s Glenn Thrush: “How Tough A Night Was It For The Incumbent? He Even Muffed Some Of The Basics Of Debate 101…” “How tough a night was it for the incumbent? He even muffed some of the basics of Debate 101, struggling to find the right camera to address once or twice during the mostly civil 90-minute exchange.” (Politico, 10/3/12)

After Mitt Romney’s debate performance, his sweet granddaughter rushed on stage to give him a big hug. Oct 3, 2012 (photographer unknown)

Time’s Mark Halperin: “A Performance That Will Both Delight The Republican Base And Make Undecided Voters Take Note. Was The Dominant Figure On The Stage On Almost Every Exchange.” (Time , 10/3/12)

ABC News’ Russell Goldman: “Romney Came Out Swinging In The First Presidential Debate…” “Mitt Romney came out swinging in the first presidential debate, challenging President Obama over his health care reforms, treatment of the economy, taxes and funding for Sesame Street’s Big Bird.” (ABC News, 10/3/12)

BuzzFeed’s Michael Hastings: “For Weeks, President Obama’s Advisers Have Been Lowering Expectations … Maybe The Expectations Weren’t Low Enough.” “For weeks, President Obama’s advisers have been lowering expectations for the debate tonight, both privately and publicly forecasting that the Commander in Chief could deliver a dud. Maybe the expectations weren’t low enough.” (BuzzFeed, 10/3/12)

Time’s Joe Klein: “Mitt Romney Won This Debate. Barack Obama Lost It. I Mean, He Got His Butt Kicked.” “Well, I’m with all the other talking heads: Mitt Romney won this debate. Barack Obama lost it. I mean, he got his butt kicked. It was, in fact, one of the most inept performances I’ve ever seen by a sitting President.” (Time , 10/3/12)

Bloomberg’s Ramesh Ponnuru: “Romney Made The Most Focused Appeal To Middle-Class Voters On The Basis Of How His Agenda Would Help Them…” “Romney made the most focused appeal to middle-class voters on the basis of how his agenda would help them — on energy, on health care, on jobs — that he ever has.” (Bloomberg, 10/4/12)

Obama’s Nasty Habit of Deception to Go Unchallenged? — Karl Rove

Karl Rove (Photo: Twitter: @karlrove)

Because of what I am about to write regarding President Obama, I must begin this post by stating this is my opinion alone and is not intended to reflect the opinion of my fellow MRC writers, Mitt Romney, or the Romney campaign.

I’m not entirely sure why pundits, Romney surrogates, and other “political experts” are so reticent to call out Barack Obama for what he is: A liar. Five days ago I wrote this piece outlining four inherent advantages that Mr. Obama has over Mitt Romney. As President of the United States, prestige alone allows Mr. Obama to lie with impunity as the mainstream media covers for him. Many Americans trust their president implicitly and would never disbelieve him because of their respect for the office of president. Frankly, I strongly believe President Obama, Secretary Clinton, and other senior administration officials are actively involved in a cover-up to prevent disclosure of solid intel they had before the consulate attack in Libya, indicating it was pre-planned and was terrorism.

Yesterday morning, Eric Fehrnstrom was outlining how Barack Obama had been deceptive and did so by providing excellent examples. When asked directly by the FOX anchor if he was calling Obama “a liar” he basically backed down and said “no.” What? Obama is not just dancing around the truth; he is outright lying and he is getting away with it! Before you get after me for writing this, I must say that I do think Governor Romney has definite plans to take care of Obama’s nasty habit of prevaricating.

Yesterday, Karl Rove published his weekly opinion piece entitled, “Obama’s Biggest Opponent Is the Truth.”

When George Stephanopoulos asked Mitt Romney in a Sept. 14 “Good Morning America” interview what he’s learned about President Obama as a debater, the former Massachusetts governor replied, “I think he’s going to say a lot of things that aren’t accurate.”

If Mr. Obama’s debate performance mirrors his campaign, Mr. Romney’s prediction will be dead on. To get a sense of how comprehensive the president’s assault on the truth has been, consider some of his false claims in recent speeches and ads.

One Obama spot says, “To pay for huge, new tax breaks for millionaires like him, Romney would have to raise taxes on the middle class: $2,000 for a family with children.”

That claim has been thoroughly discredited, including by PolitiFact Virginia and editorials in this newspaper. [...]

Another ad says, “As a corporate raider, [Mr. Romney] shipped jobs to China and Mexico.” In response, the Washington Post editorialized, “On just about every level, this ad is misleading, unfair and untrue.” As recently as Sept. 17, Mr. Obama claimed in Ohio that Mr. Romney’s “experience has been owning companies that were called ‘pioneers’ in the business of outsourcing jobs to countries like China.” But that claim, too, is a fabrication.
[...]
Candidates always have disagreements, arguing over the meaning of events or evidence. But Mr. Obama has taken ordinary political differences beyond anything we’ve seen. Every day, it seems, he attempts to disqualify his opponent through deliberate and undeniable falsehoods.

[VL: I call "falsehoods" ------> "lies"]

Barack Obama plans to be re-elected through cunning deceit…lying

This is only one side of a two-sided coin. The president can’t tell the truth about his own record either.

For example, Mr. Obama said at a Univision Town Hall on Sept. 20 that his biggest failure “is we haven’t gotten comprehensive immigration reform done.” The president then did what is second nature to him: He pinned the blame on Republicans. The problem with this excuse is that the Democrats controlled Congress by huge margins in the first two years of his presidency—and Mr. Obama never introduced an immigration bill or even provided the framework for one.

In the same interview, Mr. Obama claimed that his Justice Department’s botched “Fast and Furious” gunrunning program was “begun under the previous administration.” This time it was ABC’s Jake Tapper correcting the record, pointing out, “it was started in October 2009, nine months into the Obama presidency.”

The most troubling recent example of Mr. Obama’s serial dishonesty is his administration’s effort to deny that the attack on our consulate in Benghazi was a premeditated terrorist assault, as if the truth would somehow tarnish Mr. Obama’s foreign-policy credentials.

Voters expect politicians to stretch the truth. But when the offender is as persistent with mistruths, half-truths and no-truths as Mr. Obama is, voters expect the other candidate to blow the whistle. They want their leaders to show toughness and be competitive. Which brings us back to the coming Oct. 3 debate, to be followed by two others on Oct. 16 and 22.

During these widely watched events, Mr. Romney must call out the president. That is not so easy: Mr. Romney can’t call Mr. Obama a liar; that’s too harsh a word that would backfire. Mr. Romney must instead set the record straight in a presidential tone—firm, respectful, but not deferential. And a dash of humor is worth its weight in gold.

While Mr. Romney must point out the president’s misrepresentations, he can’t take on the role of fact-checker-in-chief. He should deal comprehensively with several of Mr. Obama’s untruths and, having done so, dismiss the rest as more of the same.

By carefully calling into question the president’s veracity, Mr. Romney will have the opportunity to provide context: Mr. Obama doesn’t shoot straight because he can’t defend his record and has no agenda for the future except the status quo, stay the course.

What exactly about the past four years do Americans like? And why would they want four more years like them? Mr. Obama knows how most Americans would answer these questions, which is why he is being so fast and loose with the truth. Mr. Romney’s job is to shine a light on this for voters.

Romney on Democratic Convention: “So far, a celebration of failure” (VIDEO)

After learning of some of the distortions and lies slamming out of the first day of the Democratic National Convention, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney today interrupted his debate prep to speak with FOX News’ chief political correspondent Carl Cameron.

Cameron characterized Romney as “chomping at the bit” to speak. The interview place took before Democrats this afternoon stunningly flip-flopped on removing ‘God’ and Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel in their platform. (‘God’ and ‘Jerusalem’ were restored; the vote took three times. Even then, the majority call was questionable.)

Cameron asked Mitt Romney specifically about the president’s recent comments giving himself an incomplete grade for his first term. Romney responded, “Incomplete usually means that you’ve got to go back and take the course again. I don’t think the American people want to see this president get another four years. The last four years have not been good for the middle class in America. There’s no question but that his policies have led to more people falling out of the middle class into poverty.”

Romney continued, “Those who think that they’re better off than they were four years ago, they may decide to vote for him, but the great majority of Americans, who recognize we’re not better off than we were four years ago, recognize his policies are not what is needed to get the middle class growing with more take-home pay and more jobs.”

Here’s Governor Romney (location was in an auto supply building in New Lebanon, New Hampshire):

Not one speaker at the Democrat convention has said Americans are better off today than they were four years ago. Another statistic they’re ignoring is when Obama took office, the number of Americans on food stamps was 32 million. Today, 47 MILLION Americans rely on food stamps. And, not a peep from them today about Obama’s latest staggering whoop-ti-doo accomplishment… America has passed the $16 trillion debt mark.

From the Democratic Natl Convention in Charlotte, NC…
By Glenn Foden – Sept 3, 2012

Obama isn’t an “incomplete” president, he’s disastrous (completely).

After listening last night to the angry, distorted rhetoric coming out of Charlotte, NC, it’s great to see Romney speak out today.

It’s also imperative we share this interview far and wide.

Joe ‘Chains-Blunder’ Biden / Does Stephanie Cutter Really Want to Go ‘THERE’?

UPDATE: Jesse Jackson’s daughter, FOX News contributor Santita Jackson, said that Biden’s remarks were “profoundly insulting” and he should apologize. Former Democrat Governor of Virginia Douglas Wilder (first African-America governor since reconstruction) also blasted the Vice President (see end of article).

Our Vice President – Joe Biden.
(Photo – Carolyn Kaster/AP)

While campaigning in Danville, Virginia on Aug 14, 2012, the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, rode in on his verbal backhoe to further dig himself and Obama into their seemingly bottomless hole. Watch the video (nearly half of Danville is populated by African Americans):

Later that same day, MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell got Stephanie Cutter (Obama’s Deputy Senior Adviser) to sit down with her to talk about ol’ Joe’s mouth and Mitt Romney’s denunciation of Biden’s statement. She squirmed and obfuscated:

Mitchell: “… [L]et’s get back to the question of when you said the president agrees with the sentiments, are you saying that the vice president went too far –“

Cutter: “No, I’m not”.

Mitchell: “–and that the president does not agree with the words that he used?”

Cutter: “If you look at the entire context of what the Vice President was talking about, he was making a point that if we repeal Wall Street reform which is what Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want to do, we’re going to go back to the days where they’re writing their own rules, and we saw what happened. Taxpayers had to bail them out. We had to spend billions of dollars of taxpayer dollars bailing them out. Now I would think that that, you know, that is a problem for middle class taxpayers. That would hamper their ability to take care of their own finances.”

MITCHELL: “The bottom line that the President agrees with Joe Biden’s sentiments but not his comments?”

CUTTER: “The bottom line is that we have no problem with those comments.”

Governor Romney doesn’t want to “let Wall Street write their own rules” but Team Obama believes if they hamster-wheel this lie over and over, like all the other lies they spout, Americans will believe it.

Does “Romney-is-a-felon” Cutter really want to go there – talking about taxpayer bailouts?

Hmm. Let’s talk about GM – headed for bankruptcy again? Or, how about that $535 million of vanished taxpayer money Obama showered on Solyndra?

Have you heard about A123 Systems?

It’s a green company based in Waltham, MA, that makes hybrid/electric car batteries. In 2009, A123 was handed a quarter BILLION grant by Obama. The company also received another $135 million in grants and tax breaks from Michigan. A123 also sucked up another $30 federal million for a wind energy whim. Their stock peaked at $25.77 per share. It’s now at 45 CENTS per share. In July, company officials said they only had five months of operating cash. Get this: A Chinese auto parts maker, Wanxiang Group, is investing up to $465 million in the broke company – buying A123 (owning 80% of the firm) for pennies on our dollars. Obama used OUR money to bankroll green technology which has ended up in CHINA’s hands.

Other Obama green energy companies receiving taxpayer money who have stuck it to us: Tesla – $465 million, Fiskar Automotive – $529 million, Ener1 – $118.5 million, Beacon Power – $43 million, Abound Solar – $400 million, Amonix Solar – $15.4 million DOE grant plus another $9.5 million in federal tax credits, Energy Conversion Devices & United Solar Ovonic LLC – $13.3 million tax credit, Evergreen Solar – $125 million plus $58 million from Massachusetts, Mountain Plaza, Inc. – $424,000, Spectrawatt – $500,000, Azure Dynamics – couldn’t find exact amount, but MILLIONS lost, and Solar Trust of America – $2.1 billion.

Troubled green companies for which taxpayers could be on the hook:
Ecotality
BrightSource Energy
Cogentrix Energy

A few other companies receiving Obama stimulus money or tax breaks:
Babcock & Brown,
Granite Reliable Power
Johnson Controls
NextEra Energy
Nissan
NRG Solar
Olsen’s Crop Service
Range Fuels
Schneider Electric
Thompson River Power LLC
Willard & Kelsey Solar Group

What about all those “shovel ready” jobs Obama touted to help push through his stimulus bill? Well, the shovels weren’t ready.

The half of America that actually pays taxes are on the hook for Obama’s $787 BILLION Recovery Act Bill – better known as the Stimulus Stinker DUD. He did that to us. And don’t forget, in January 2011, Obama whined and pouted for another $447 BILLION – which, thankfully, he didn’t get.

But, I digress…

Back to ol’ Joe. American Crossroads Super PAC reminded us today why Biden is good for the Romney/Ryan ticket:

Run, Joe. Run

It’s been a bad week for Team Obama.

Obama/Biden Worried About Romney/Ryan’s Large Crowds

This brought a smile to my face… VP crowd numbers (Aug 13, 2012):

Vice President Joe Biden spoke before a crowd of 660 people in Durham, N.C., at the Durham Armory during a campaign stop for President Barack Obama on Monday.

Biden’s appearance before a comparatively meager crowd came a day after the newly formed Republican ticket — presidential candidate Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan — rallied a crowd of over 10,000 in High Point, N.C., about an hour away, and a crowd of approximately 4,700 people in Mooresville, N.C., about two and a half hours away.

Jeffrey Bunnell, the assistant chief of special operations for the City of Durham Fire Department, provided The Daily Caller with the 660 crowd estimate, attributing the number to the Secret Service.

Tomorrow, FOX News’ Britt Hume has snagged the first official ‘single’ interview with Paul Ryan. The interview will air at 6:00 PM ET on FOX.

More on crowd sizes; “The Republican base is energized.”:

New Obama panic: Romney crowd sizes
August 13, 2012

The recent frantic email theme to supporters from Team Obama about Mitt Romney’s run-away fundraising successes has been expanded to the crowd size gap between the thousands who rushed out over the weekend to see Romney and new running mate Rep. Paul Ryan and the hundreds who cheered on President Obama.

The big worry expressed in a new email from Obama’s Chicago HQ: “The Republican base is energized.” The reason: Romney attracted 15,000 at a rally over the weekend.

The email:

Paul –

I just got this disturbing report: Yesterday’s Romney-Ryan rally in North Carolina pulled in an overflow crowd of 15,000 people.

There’s no spinning that number. It’s a LOT of people, and the Republican base in energized.

And that’s not all. Since the VP announcement, Romney’s campaign has brought in over 70,000 donations from his Tea Party base.

We’ve got to step up our game and mobilize our supporters — starting right now.

Donate $3 or right now to help us rally our base around President Obama’s agenda >>

Listen to what one Republican supporter said about Paul Ryan: “I love him…He’s going to excite the Tea Party and get them on board…”

We can’t let the Republicans claim the momentum. …

Romney Scorches Obama’s Crony Capitalism / Levin, Portman, Sununu Concur

If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Barack Obama 7/13/12 Roanoke, VA

Governor Romney was on fire yesterday!

The news was a-buzz with his blazing no-teleprompter speech at Irwin, Pennsylvania, which scorched Obama for his crony capitalism, job outsourcing, his belief that business owners didn’t create their businesses, and more. If you missed it, check it out here.

Team Romney today followed up with a new web ad:

President Obama’s time in office has been marked by political payoffs to the donor class and layoffs for the middle class. He showered his friends with stimulus funds and sent millions of taxpayer dollars overseas. If we can’t trust him with our money, why should we trust him for another four years?

Where Did All The Money Go?

Liberal politics don’t make good jobs! – Mitt Romney

Conservative radio host Mark Levin loved what he heard from Romney so much he had to call Neil Cavuto (FOX News):

“What Obama said on Saturday [Friday] was so outrageous – he’s disrespecting the American people. Everybody out there who holds a job and works hard, and applies their skills, and puts in an honest day for a paycheck, or starts a business – he just slapped everybody around – because it has never been about millionaires or billionaires with Obama. He despises the capitalist system.” – Mark Levin

Fox & Friends invited Senator Rob Portman to share his opinion on O’Liarbama’s revealing declaration (July 17, 2012):

MUST SEE VIDEO – Obama Insults Business Owners: “You Didn’t Build That!”

Insulting.

This is the video everyone is talking about today. And no, it isn’t taken out of context or edited in any way. And that’s what makes this so baffling.

I mean, this is the President of the United States here — going on and on about how American entrepreneurs are in no part responsible for their own success; rather, it was “someone else” who helped them achieve it. And “someone else” in liberal speak means the heavy hand of government. Take a listen:

Mitt responded to Obama’s foolish remarks today at an event in Pennsylvania:

“It’s insulting to every innovator, every entreprenuer in America.”

Mr. Obama’s Excuses are Revealing his Impotence as “Leader”

President Obama is becoming a laughing stock. I really believe that now. Just tonight I was talking with a close friend of mine about decisions Mr. Obama is making. The latest was to invoke executive privilege in the Fast & Furious congressional investigation. To that point yesterday, everybody believed the president had no knowledge of the operation; by invoking executive privilege, he is basically informing the world he is connected to it and now people are routinely using the words “cover up” in reference to him.

We could discuss dozens of such decisions over the last year that make Mr. Obama appear weak among Americans and world leaders. It is almost as if he is trying hard to lose the election in November. In fact, I don’t think I could think of more damaging actions he could be taking right now than those he has taken!

The single most important attribute of this president, which informs Americans and world leaders Mr. Obama is a weak man, is his propensity to blame other people and entities for his failures. Any person that has had a basic leadership course understands well that a good leader shoulders responsibility. To do otherwise is a sure sign of weakness; even vulnerability. The last thing we need in our nation right now is an impotent or feeble leader as POTUS.

Those of you that followed President Reagan’s leadership closely will remember the Iran-Contra scandal. Without describing all the details, Pres. Reagan was being accused of knowing about an operation that was led and directed by others. Then, one day from the Oval office, he went on national television and took direct responsibility. In effect he said he was the president and as such, he was fully responsible. From that moment, his stature as a leader catapulted. People forgave him and the nation moved on.

President Obama cannot do that. He is not a leader. He does not know how to negotiate. He does not command respect. He does not know how to tell the truth. As a narcissist, he cannot accept the blame for any of his actions. It is not in his DNA. I honestly believe Mr. Obama is on course to be perceived by history to be one of America’s worst presidents of all time — certainly the weakest president we have ever had.

The following political cartoon, in my opinion, so perfectly conveys the place in history Mr. Obama has chosen to place himself:

Pres. Obama: “Excuse Maker in Chief” (artwork by Michael Ramirez)

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
