Romney Announces TRADE Policy Advisory Group Chair & Co-Chairs

October 14th, 2011 Jayde Wyatt Comments off

Coinciding with his new video on trade, China, and Obama, Governor Mitt Romney has announced the names of the Chairman and Co-Chairs of his Trade Policy Advisory Group:

Boston, MA – … Mitt Romney announced that Secretary Carlos Gutierrez will serve as chair, and Rod Hunter and John Herrmann as co-chairs, of his Trade Policy Advisory Group. The group will help Romney formulate pro-growth trade policies that open markets around the world for American goods and services while ensuring that trading partners play by the rules and welcome robust competition. Romney will discuss his vision for American trade policy, and its role in economic growth and job creation, today at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, WA.

“Free trade is essential to restoring robust economic growth and creating jobs,” said Mitt Romney. “American businesses and workers are unparalleled in their productivity and ingenuity, and when we are given the opportunity to compete we have shown we can win. My Trade Policy Advisory Group has been instrumental in shaping the policies that I presented last month in my economic plan, Believe in America, which will reverse the stagnation brought about by the Obama administration’s neglect of our trading interests. I look forward to working with this team on a strategy for international trade that will produce the right environment for economic growth and job creation.”

“Mitt Romney has the right combination of private sector experience, conservative principles, and leadership to address the enormous challenges that the United States faces in the international economy,” said former Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez. “His trade agenda is unique in its steadfast commitment to free trade coupled with a willingness to confront nations that betray principles of free enterprise to exploit our own open market. This approach is necessary to restore a pro-growth business environment that will create jobs.”

Background On The Chair And Co-Chairs Of The Trade Policy Advisory Group:

Carlos Gutierrez served as Secretary of Commerce from 2005 to 2009. Gutierrez also served as Co-Chair of the U.S. Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba. Prior to entering government service, Gutierrez was the President and CEO of the Kellogg Company.

Rod Hunter served on the National Security Council staff from 2003 to 2007. Hunter was a Special Assistant to the President and NSC Senior Director for International Trade, Energy, and Environment. Prior to the NSC, Hunter served as Special Counsel in the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

John Herrmann served on the National Security Council staff from 2005 to 2009. Herrmann was NSC Director for International Trade and Investment, and then served as a Special Assistant to the President and NSC Senior Director for International Trade, Energy, and Environment.

*NOTE - Secretary Gutierrez wrote an excellent piece on Romney and free trade for FoxNews.com yesterday. It’s worth reading in its entirety:

Romney Will Create Jobs By Opening New Markets for America

Former Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, Chairman of Mitt Romney's Trade Policy Advisory Group

[...]
President Obama claimed to understand the importance of free trade, declaring in his State of the Union address: “We have to seek new markets aggressively, just as our competitors are. If America sits on the sidelines while other nations sign trade deals, we will lose the chance to create jobs on our shores.” Sadly, his habit of talking about jobs while doing nothing to further their creation has been on full display in this arena.

Upon taking office he derailed the robust and active trade agenda pursued by the outgoing Bush administration. He inherited ongoing negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership with countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, and New Zealand, and immediately put them on hold. He also inherited free trade agreements (FTAs) with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea that were signed, sealed, and ready for delivery to Congress. But it has taken him nearly three years to move them forward, and their passage this week has been a bitter reminder of opportunities lost during which time we have watched competitors pass us by.

While President Obama kept America on the sidelines, other countries have been in the game. An agreement between South Korea and the EU went into effect earlier this year giving European companies a significant advantage over American ones in the Korean market. EU-Korean trade increased 17 percent in just the first two weeks.

China has been busily working to supplant our influence in our own hemisphere, making massive investments in places like Colombia that prompted the Colombian president to declare Asia “the new motor of the world economy.”
[...]
Mitt Romney offers the most comprehensive agenda for opening new markets to American goods and services. Just as importantly, Mitt is the only candidate with the skills and experience to put his plan into effect. As president, he will ensure that any pending FTAs are promptly submitted for approval by Congress. He will vigorously pursue successful completion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. And he will pursue new agreements, be they with economic powerhouses in our own backyard like Brazil, close allies like the European Union, or smaller economies across the globe that share a strong commitment to the principles of open markets and fair competition.

Hannity Snags Coveted Interview with Chris Christie After Endorsing Romney (VIDEO)

October 12th, 2011 Jayde Wyatt Comments off

After the fantastic news yesterday – that Governor Chris Christie had endorsed Governor Mitt Romney for president – FOX News’ Sean Hannity was pleased to snag an interview last night with Christie:

Part 2:

Romney’s statement on Christie’s endorsement:

It is an honor to have Governor Chris Christie’s support,” said Mitt Romney. “Governor Christie is a national leader in the fight to reform government and cut spending. His efforts in New Jersey are an example for the rest of the country. In my campaign for president, I am fighting for these same reforms and I am humbled to have his support.”

Christie’s statement of support:

… “This is the most important election in generations. Whether we are able to fix our economy and get our country on the right track will have ramifications for decades. We cannot afford to continue on our current path. Mitt Romney has a life history of coming into struggling organizations and turning them around. Right now, we need someone like him in theWhite House to fundamentally change our economy and reverse three years of failed policies. Unlike our current president, Mitt Romney understands the economy from the inside out. Fixing the economy will not be easy, but Mitt has shown throughout his life that he has the leadership ability and expertise to lead our country toward a recovery. Republicans should recognize the importance of this election and realize that if they are serious about regaining the White House, Mitt Romney is the only candidate to back.”

UPDATE from the Washington Post (The debate was held at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire):

WINNERS

* Mitt Romney: We expected Romney to shine in this economic-focused debate and shine he did. Romney was knowledgeable and detailed — as expected — but also relaxed to the point where he let a little bit of his personality show. Romney’s biggest hurdle in this race is that he strikes lots of people as inauthentic and awkward. Not only was the head and shoulders above the other candidates on stage when it came to looking presidential, Romney also showcased his human side. His best debate in a string of very solid performances.

Also, The Page by Mark Halperin grades the debate:

UPDATE by Jayde
Mitt Romney’s performance leaves others on the sidelines in GOP debate

In a debate which was dominated by the economy and short on policy detail, Romney’s main rival Rick Perry failed to deliver.

Former governor Mitt Romney consolidated his front-runner status on Tuesday night in the Republican presidential race, overshadowing his rivals in the latest debate which was dominated by the country’s faltering economy.

His main rival, the Texas governor Rick Perry, needed a strong performance after seeing his poll ratings drop sharply, the result of doing badly in the previous two debates. But he again failed to deliver.

Republican strategists were scathing about Perry’s inability to mount a comeback, and his lack of fire. The veteran Alex Castellanos said Perry’s team had complained that he had been tired in the last debate because he had had to stand for so long. This time, he had been sitting down, but was still lacklustre.

“Next time he is going to have to get a mattress,” Castellanos said on CNN of the Texas governor’s sleepy performance.

In a debate short on policy detail, Romney, emerged as the most fluent and most at ease[...]

Romney’s success in the debate came only hours after he secured the much-prized endorsement of the New Jersey govenor Chris Christie, who last week announced he would not be joining the race.

GOP12 from The Hill only passed out 1 A grade and it went to Gov. Romney.

He didn’t just run circles around everyone. He ran squares and isosceles triangles. He can talk forever on economic issues; whereas, Rick Perry’s answer for everything is just two words — “energy independence”, which means that, at least, he can’t literally be accused of one-word answers.

Romney was that rarest of phenomenons last night. He was placed in an environment that perfectly suited him, and was close to perfect in it.

Everyone lowers expectations for debates. Romney neither lowered nor raised them before last night’s seated scrum. He just went in and showed his economic chops without showing off.

It’s exactly why Democrats fear him the most. Right now, he’s running about evenly with Barack Obama in national polls, but that’s before debates or any significant exposure before the nation. You put him in a debate, with a bad economy and Barack Obama on the other side, and even Mesopotamia would prefer taking its chances against Alexander the Great.

It’s been said before, but above all, he exudes competence, which is what voters want. Instead of putting on ideology on and then trying to fit his conclusions around it, he seems to find conclusions and then use his ideology to explain them.

In short, it would be very difficult for the Obama campaign to demonize him as a dangerous ideologue, which is exactly what they’ll try to do to any Republican nominee, including Romney.

Romney Talks JOBS in Tallahassee, Trump Says Christie’s ‘No’ Benefits Romney

October 6th, 2011 Jayde Wyatt Comments off

Mitt Romney campaigns in Tallahassee, Florida. Oct 5, 2011 (Photo by Christian Clements)

Lunch time yesterday found Mitt Romney mingling with patrons at Seminole Wind Restaurant in Tallahassee, Florida.

Local business owners met with The Gov to share their concerns on the Obama economy. Focusing mainly on jobs and the president, Romney then addressed the group. The round table meeting ended with a meal of fried chicken, barbecue, and other delectables from the restaurant’s buffet.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney used a lunchtime visit at a Tallahassee restaurant to criticize President Barack Obama’s handling of the economy.

Romney took direct aim at Obama’s contention that he was a warrior for the middle class, saying that ordinary Americans were the victims of how the president has steered the nation.

“This week, the president, he said to the American people that he is a warrior for the middle class. If that’s the case I think there has been a severe case of friendly fire,” Romney said. “This guy’s friendly fire has hurt the American people.”

Romney was spending his second straight day in Florida, which looms large in the presidential primary calendar now that its Republican voters will head to the polls Jan. 31.

He did make the unusual decision to campaign in the state capital, which has more Democratic than Republican voters even though the GOP controls state government.
[...]
“Let’s have some great chicken and let’s take back America,” Romney said.

The former Massachusetts governor focused solely on Obama, jobs and the nation’s economy. He held a roundtable with some local business owners, including Thomas Bryant, the owner of the restaurant which features pictures of Jesus Christ along its walls.

Bryant told Romney that he was competing with the federal government for employees. He said that he has had trouble getting employees to work more hours because to do so would render them ineligible for various types of government assistance.

Before the roundtable Bryant said he was undecided about who to support in next year’s primary.

“I just take it as a sign from the Lord for him to come to my restaurant,” Bryant said.

Read more here.

Romney at Seminole Wind restaurant:

Donald Trump opined on Fox & Friends (FOX News) yesterday morning on Chris Christie’s decline to make a bid for the White House:

“I think the field is starting to look pretty interesting and pretty good. And look, the key is that [President Barack] Obama be beaten. You’ve got to get rid of Obamacare, we’ve got to put this country back in order, we’ve got to stop China from just ripping us left and right,” he said.
[...]
I think Romney could be the big winner in this. I think that a lot of the people that would have supported Chris are going to be going to Romney. I think that probably is a likely outcome[.]” …

Romney: President Obama Has Failed, Americans NOT Better off

October 5th, 2011 Jayde Wyatt Comments off

President Obama made two confessions to ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos a couple of days ago (Oct 3, 2011).

Obama admitted that he is “absolutely” the underdog in the upcoming presidential election (running unopposed so far - thus, donations aren’t divided among other candidates, the bully pulpit, main stream media, and George Soros just aren’t enough for him).

He also said…

Americans are not better off under his watch:

The next day, Mitt Romney was interviewed on radio program ‘America’s Morning News’. Co-anchor John McCaslin asked The Gov about President Obama’s earlier ‘confession’ to George Stephanopoulos about the state of Americans:

John McCaslin: “Now, yesterday we heard echoes of 1980’s campaign question posed by Ronald Reagan of whether the country was better off under Jimmy Carter than it was four years ago. Now fast forward to President Obama speaking to ABC News yesterday where he admitted that the country today is not better off than it was four years ago. How can a man who has been on the job, sir, since January of 2009 make such a statement?”

Mitt Romney: “I’m glad he’s finally admitting the truth although he’s trying to find someone else to blame for his failure. The truth of the matter is that Americans are not better off than they were three years ago. They won’t be better off than they were four years ago as of November of 2012 and I think that’s why he’s in such trouble politically and why it is he’s casting about for someone else to take the fall. But the truth is, the buck stops at his desk and he’s failed.”
