Hugh Hewitt – Obama: “Serial Failure”, Romney: “Extremely Well-Qualified”

Hugh Hewitt has written a new must-read book titled ‘The Brief Against Obama’.

Last weekend, while many Americans were watching Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas and swimmers Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky, and Michael Phelps go for the gold in merry old England, C-Span aired a significant presentation on ‘The Brief Against Obama‘ – a new book written by *radio talk show host and pundit Hugh Hewitt.

With the goal of persuading weak affiliation voters (Independents, undecided voters, wavering Democrats and Libertarians) NOT to re-elect Obama, Hewitt engaged listeners as he spoke about the facts of Obama’s many broken promises. An informative and entertaining speaker, Hewitt’s audience was also treated to a Q&A session. The gathering took place on July 30, 2012 at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, CA and later aired on C-Span.

For those who missed the must-see presentation, here’s Hugh:

@13:52 – “I wanted to write a book that would persuade people NOT to vote for President Obama and I knew it had to be fact-based“… [235 pages of text, 45 pages of footnotes]

I made a very long list of all the promises President Obama made, all of the PREDICTIONS he put forward, and all of the polemics he used. Each chapter of the 25 chapters begins with a quotation or series of quotations from President Obama not earlier than 2007. I’m not interested in what he did as a young man. I’m not interested in his biography. I’m interested in what he promised to do as a candidate or as a President – what he predicted would happen as a result of his actions or the language he used as a candidate or President. And, when I think you stack it up HE DID NOT DELIVER.”

@14:55 – “In fact, he is a SERIAL FAILURE when it comes to delivering on his promises. Therefore, I don’t believe he is OWED your vote or anyone’s vote based upon what he said he would do and DID NOT DO – based on what he predicted would happen and did not happen – based upon what was, in fact, the most hyper partisan set of rhetorical devices that we have seen in the modern presidency.”

@15:19 – Hewitt speaks about A Mormon in the White House? – 10 Things Americans Should Know About Mitt Romney, a book he penned in 2007 underscoring Romney’s extraordinary viability as a Republican presidential nominee – the “enormous capacity Mitt Romney has.”

@18:00 – Mentions his prediction that Romney’s experience at Bain would be twisted by Obama and used against him. He also predicts, in the waning days of this campaign, because Obama is desperate, Romney’s religion will be used against him.

@18:16 – “The only reason I thought that President Obama could win reelection based upon the work I completed in ‘The Brief AGainst Obama’ is if we Republicans … nominated a terrible candidate – if they nominated someone who would not win the confidence of Americans. Luckily, we have nominated an EXTREMELY well-qualified individual who is ready to be President on the first day. And, I think that’s becoming very, very obvious.

@18:43 – Hewitt explains why Romney is such a great nominee and speaks of the enormity of the task of saving the 2002 Winter Olympics: Romney took it “from the edge of despair and disaster to an enormous internationally recognized success. We need that kind of capability.”

@20:37 – Addresses Romney critics who say he isn’t aggressive enough. “I’m very confident about Romney.”

@29:30 – Speaks on the ‘Bradley effect’ and Obama supporters.

@31:25 – V.P. possibilities

@34:00 – What’s the worst thing Obama has done? Listen to this list!

@40:00 – Hugh’s three favorite Obama quotes: “The very best arguments to make against Obama are his own statements.”

@42:00 – Mentions In, But Not Of a book he wrote in 1998. With his HHS regulations, Obama has awakened a sleeping giant – Evangelical, Catholic, and orthodox Jewish voters.

@48:00 – “We don’t want four more years of Chicago style politics. And what happens if he’s reelected [Obama] and he’s not even restrained by the prospect of reelection?”

@51:50 – Buy the book, read it, give it to an Independent or a Democrat.

@53:00 – Excellent Q&A session

Hugh’s extensive experience in politics and law, combined with his sense of humor and story-telling capacity (no teleprompter) made listening to him speak for over an hour a very enjoyable and heartening experience. His endorsement of Romney couldn’t be any stronger. I encourage MRC readers to share these remarks everywhere possible and promote his new book. Readers may purchase ‘The Brief Against Obama’ here. As Hugh asked – get it, read it, then pass it along to an Independent or undecided voter!

*Hewitt is not only the host of a popular nationally syndicated radio show, he is a lawyer (graduate of Harvard College and University of Michigan Law School) and a law professor at Chapman University Law School in southern California where he teaches Constitutional Law.

Romney Heads to England, Israel, Poland: Meeting Cameron, Kenny, Netanyahu, Walesa & More

Governor Mitt Romney is going overseas…

On Tuesday, after delivering a speech in Reno, Nevada to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at their annual conference, Romney will embark on a six-day, full schedule, listening tour to England, Israel, and Poland:

The presumptive Republican nominee and former Massachusetts governor will meet with the leaders of all three countries, other government officials, opposition leaders, and at least one U.S. ambassador. He plans to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics, visit sites of historical significance, and hold public events in at least two of the countries.

Aides say Romney does not view the trip as an opportunity to roll out any new policy proposals. “This trip is an opportunity for the governor to listen and learn, to visit countries that share common values, common interests, and I should say in many cases shared heritage with people here in the United States,” Romney’s policy director, Lanhee Chen, told reporters in a conference call previewing the trip.

… While Romney is likely to highlight differences in his approach to international relations relative to Obama, he is expected to refrain from attacking Obama while traveling abroad.

A preview of The Gov’s itinerary…

England

The Olympic rings are lit up on Tower Bridge in preparation for the start of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. The Opening Ceremony takes place Friday, July 27, 2012.

Thursday, July 26, 2012:

Governor Romney will meet with British leaders including, Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Former Prime Minister Tony Blair, Labour Party Leader Ed Miliband, Foreign Secretary William Hague, and Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne.

Friday, July 27, 2012:

Romney will meet with Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Later, he’ll meet with U.S. Olympic athletes and attend the 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies. USA! USA! USA! (We know the strong passion The Gov has for the Olympics – the spirit of competition – and for the capacity of the games to inspire unity, mutual understanding, and respect across the world. Romney is known for his turnaround of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.) Also, if schedules can be coordinated, he may try to meet with other world leaders who are in London for the Olympics.

Israel

The gleam from the Dome of the Rock reflects the afternoon sun in Jerusalem, Israel. Among the Israeli leaders meeting with Mitt Romney will be Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Sunday, July 29, 2012:

Romney has been to Israel three times in the past, on a family visit in the late 1990s and, in 2007 and 2011, on fact-finding trips focused on security and economic issues.

On this trip, he’ll meet first with Daniel Shapiro, the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, who will give him a briefing. Romney will also meet with Israeli officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, and will also sit down with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. He has met them all on previous trips.

While aides say Romney will not specifically criticize the president’s Middle East policy while he is in Israel, he will continue to make the case for standing with Israel – as he often does on the campaign trail. “America needs to stand by its allies, particularly allies that are under siege like Israel, particularly democratic allies who have such a shared history and shared values with America” Dan Senor, a special adviser on foreign policy, told reporters in previewing Romney’s message.

In an op-ed written yesterday, former U.S. Senator Norm Coleman (GOP) shares the following:

By sheer coincidence, Romney is an old and personal friend of Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Romney’s first job after finishing up at Harvard was at the Boston Consulting Group, and Netanyahu was working there at the time and sat in an office down the hall. The two struck up a friendship and have remained close. If Romney were to become president, it would be an extraordinary chapter in U.S.-Israeli relations.

“There is little precedent,” The New York Times wrote recently, “for two politicians of their stature to have such a history together that predates their entry into government.”

Certainly Israel could use a close friend in the White House these days.

Over the last three years, however, the U.S.-Israeli relationship has been troubled.

President Obama does not seem to have personal affection for the Jewish state. He has publicly castigated Israel, including at the United Nations. He was caught on a hot microphone denigrating Israel’s prime minister, and when Netanyahu came to Washington he received him with marked coolness, neglecting to hold the customary joint news conference before asking the Israeli leader to exit through a rear door.

Romney will also deliver remarks while in Israel.

Poland

The skyline over Gdansk, Poland turns a rosy hue at dusk. Governor Romney will meet with Poland’s former President Lech Walesa in the port city.

Monday, July 30, 2012:

Romney’s final destination is Poland, where he will meet with the current leadership, including President Bronislaw Komorowski, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. Romney will also meet with Lech Walesa, the former Polish president and winner of the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize. Walesa, who was president from 1990 to 1995 and oversaw Poland’s transition out of communism, was the one who invited Romney to visit his country.

Ian Brzezinski, another Romney adviser, said the visit to Poland will highlight an important alliance that is “rich in history” — from Polish support for the American revolution all the way through Iraq and Afghanistan, where the country has sent troops to assist in the U.S.-led war efforts. Romney will also point to country’s economic success, which he will say stems from free market principles and capitalism – the themes he pushes on the campaign trail at home.

“This is a country that stands in sharp contrast economically to the rest of Europe where economies are dropping by about 5% or more,” Brzezinski told reporters.

Romney will also deliver remarks and visit historical sights in Poland. The ‘Lech Walesa Institute’ said in a statement that Governor Romney is visiting Poland by special invitation, issued to him at the beginning of the month, by President Walesa:

Poland and Poles are paying close attention to the election campaign in the United States, focused on choosing a leader for the American nation for the next four years,” Walesa wrote in the invitation dated July 4.

Their choice will influence the fate of America and the world.

Walesa refused to meet with Obama last year, saying “It doesn’t suit me.”

Romney’s invitation from freedom-fighter Walesa is, indeed, a high honor.

This will be a memorable week for Mitt and Ann as they find themselves in the international spotlight. It’s another opportunity for world leaders and the good people in England, Israel, and Poland to see that the USA has an opportunity, through Mitt Romney, to elect a strong, seasoned statesman who will once again respect our allies, strengthen our partnerships, and instill renewed confidence in the mighty cause of freedom.

To Mitt and Ann, Godspeed!

Obama Gives Pinocchio A Bad Name: Open Book? Transparency? Felon?

Obama gives Pinocchio a bad name…

Cartoon by Michael Ramirez

Get a load of this guy…

Obama says a candidate for the White House must be an open book… What a hypocrite!

July 10, 2012:

Notice O’Storyteller didn’t answer the question? How about how easily Obama lies?

His operatives are parroting the lie that Governor Romney is the most secretive guy since Nixon. We know what’s going on here… Tack a label on the opposition describing what YOUR guy is/has been in order to deflect and deceive. In psychological terms it’s called projection; it’s when one projects their problems onto other people:

It is “the operation of expelling feelings or wishes the individual finds wholly unacceptable – too shameful, too obscene, too dangerous – by attributing them to another”.

Obama has been anything but an open book and he’s the real outsourcer. He and his Scheme Team are hell-bent to project those negatives onto Governor Romney. When he ran for President, the main stream media conveniently lost their collective vetting magnifying glass. (Oh, but Romney’s days as a teenager? Pull out the microscope and publish page after page!)

Figuring out the real Obama is a puzzle which has occupied many *heroic modern-day Sherlocks.

More projection? Bill-Ayers-Tony-Rezko-Frank-Marshall-Davis-Obama implies Romney could be a felon? *Take a look at this clip regarding Obama and Davis from the new movie 2016: Obama’s America which will be shown in theaters beginning July 27th (begins @:15):

Regarding the continuing “felon” falsehoods blurting out of Obama talking heads, CNN’s John King spoke last week with four Bain Capital employees; three are Democrats, two are active Obama supporters. They confirm Romney’s truth – that he left Bain in February 1999 and had nothing to do with the company:

CNN Report Debunks Latest False Attack From Obama Campaign

Last week, CNN’s Anderson cooper, John King, and David Gergen reported on Team Obama’s despicable and desperate behavior on Romney/Bain and possibly being a felon. Even Obama-cheerleader David Gergen frustratingly concluded: “The Obama campaign is now playing a very rough form of politics and is that really what we were promised?” Rarely does one see such concern on Gergen’s face for Obama…

July 12, 2012 (begins @2:30, ends @8:44):

Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey sums it up:

“Put it simply: Team Obama is lying, and it continues to lie about Romney. They are desperate to find a way to make Romney’s time at Bain work in their favor, and that desperation has nearly reached pathological levels. Still, for Obama, it beats talking about the economy, jobs, the deficit, and anything else that actually matters to voters.”

2016, Obama’s America – A Documentary That Presents The Truth About Barack Obama

A dear friend, Jerry Molen, who is one of Hollywood’s brightest and most capable Oscar winning producers, is also one of America’s strongest advocates for freedom and liberty. A Marine veteran and conservative who spent his career with Stephen Spielberg producing and/or working on such great films – Schindler’s List, Minority Report, Jurassic Park, Tootsie, Twister and many others has produced, and with Dinesh D’Souza released ’2016: Obama’s America’, the movie. The film premiered in Houston today and is set for national release on July 27th.

I know Jerry and his commitment to America; his patriotism and his love for country and the freedoms America stands for. Jerry’s passion and commitment to America is manifest in this film. Jerry is not an extremist or on the right wing fringe as some on the left have painted him to be – he is a rational and intelligent American who has a sincere concern for the direction of America under the Obama regime. Jerry’s willing sacrifice to put it all on the line in this film has already had blowback as he has suffered censorship when invited to speak to youth about America and been further shunned by Hollywood. I would encourage all to see this political documentary. Unlike the Michael Moore-type films, this documentary is based upon credible facts and the writings of the well respected Dinesh D’Souza.

Below is the text of a recent Texas Tribune interview with Jerry.

A producer who worked on Jurassic Park, Twister, Schindler’s List and other blockbusters has come to Texas to debut his newest movie — a political documentary that says President Obama seeks to weaken America’s global influence.

Gerald Molen will screen 2016: Obama’s America for the first time Friday in Houston. The film, based on books by conservative author Dinesh D’Souza, looks at Obama’s past and speculates on how it could be influencing the present. It asserts that Obama seeks to downsize America’s standard of living because of anti-colonialist ideals held by his father.

“Obama has a dream, a dream from his father, that colonialism be set right, and America be downsized,” the official movie trailer says.

In an interview with the Tribune, Molen spoke of his involvement in the film, why he thinks it is important and his expectations for the premiere. The following is an edited version of the transcript.

TT: Can you tell me a little about the film?

Molen: It’s based on The Roots of Obama’s Rage and also an upcoming book by Dinesh D’Souza coming out in [July] titled appropriately Obama’s America. It’s based on both those books and basically is giving an overview of what America might look like in 2016 if Obama is elected again.

TT: And what does that America look like?

Molen: If you take a look at his own words, his writings, the promises he’s made — I think it pretty well tells the American people what they can expect, and what is on the agenda that hasn’t been accomplished. For me, those things are a little disconcerting.

TT: What do you hope the audience comes away with?

Molen: There’s no particular message that we’re trying to get across besides that we want people to do their own research and basically just become aware of what is going on around them. Everyone wants to understand what is best for their families and best for their children and grandchildren because they care about that, and I think there’s a message for people to get awakened to what kind of dilemma we might have in 2016 if Obama is elected for another four years.

TT: Are there things Obama is doing now that indicate we are on that path? For instance, Obama’s immigration policy and health care reform was recently upheld — do these big issues play into the movie at all?

Character, It Matters (Part II)

Character – Integrity – Trust. Words matter, and these words in particular as we prepare to choose the next President of the United States. Character, integrity and trust are measures and standards that we must consider when entrusting the leadership of our nation to the next POTUS. Our nation is in turmoil! We are over-burdened with debt and spending; we suffer from failed leadership; the basic fabric of our society under attack – family, life and liberty. We suffer fissures and fractures in our society as never before in our respective lifetimes. Judicial appointments to the Supreme Court over the next four years will define, not just the nature of the Supreme Court, but all US District Courts as well. With Europe in severe financial distress, the Middle East in turmoil and contrary nations asserting their totalitarian regimes for world domination – the world is in commotion and tumult. As a nation, we sit atop a precipice where strong and principled leadership will make all the difference. If ever there was a time choose a leader with character, integrity and trust – it is NOW! If ever there was a time to choose a principled leader with capacity and experience – it is NOW! If ever there was a time to choose a man of principle; a man who understands and abides the founding principles of our nation; a man who is aligned with the interests of our American values – it is NOW! This is not a time for passivity and sitting on the sidelines – this is a time for active ADVOCACY; a time to stand for what we believe in and speak out – becoming voices of reason in a dark and boisterous world!

Character, It Matters (Part I) was a comparative of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. It is clear to me, in spite of my bias, that on the character measure, Mitt Romney stands well above Obama in this regard; in the company he keeps, in his core values and principles, in the manner in which he has lived and continues to live his life, and in his commitment to America. Character, It Matters Part II is less of a comparative and is intended to dissect in greater detail the true character of Barack Obama. Absent knowing Obama personally, we can only look to his actions, associations, and seek to measure his intent. It has been said, you can measure the true character of a man when his back is against the wall and when things are down; his actions will reflect who and what he is. As a nation, we have been tolerant and treated this man with kid gloves – NO MORE! Simply put, Barack Obama has been corrupted by power and greed, in fact, Barack Obama has proven his weakness of character by his actions of late, with truth revealed – no more hiding in the shadows of subtlety.

Let’s consider the revealing facts of Obama’s character:

Firstly, it was revealed much to the chagrin of Obama’s campaign that it’s primary strategy is to destroy, or ‘kill’ Mitt Romney. Ann Romney addresses it below.

Secondly, at Obama’s direction, he and his campaign have fabricated and spread lies about Mitt Romney, not distortions, but flat out lies in an effort to elevate their standing in this election. Further, they have covered up their own indiscretions. Pride is a terrible thing and is most often manifest when one undertakes to diminish another for personal gain and elevation. However, when intentionally deceptive and driven by lies to cover one’s own sins, or achieve an agenda, it is no longer pride but an evil construct of power and greed for self, above principle and others.

Breitbart provides a good summary HERE and below. Who do you think directs David Axelrod’s agenda?

Obama and Mainstream Media Lies (they are inseparable):
1) Bain Capital and Mitt Romney’s outsourcing agenda (independently proven to be false)
2) Bain Capital and Mitt Romney’s role therein, regarding greed and ‘vulture capitalism’ that cost American jobs (independently proven to be false)
3) Mitt Romney’s failure to create jobs and his competence and capacity in the economy (independently proven to be false). Parenthetically, Mitt Romney, through this efforts, has created billions of dollars of wealth for many American’s, including the jobs represented, and more.
4) Mitt Romney’s hidden wealth, ie, ill-gotten and hidden gains (independently proven to be false)
5) Mitt Romney’s bullying (independently proven to be false)
And yet, the Obama campaign continues their distortions, lies and attempted destruction in spite of truth to the contrary…

Obama’s Realities Untold in the Media:
…Obama purchased his million-dollar home with the help of a man who’s now a convicted felon. Talk about “murky” finances.
…Obama lied about his relationship with a domestic terrorist.
…Obama told three dozen falsehoods in his autobiography.
…Obama lied about his socialist New Party membership.
…Obama is lying about Romney’s record as an outsourcer.
…Obama refused to disclose who all of his donors were in 2008.
…hundreds of innocent Mexicans were gunned down by Fast and Furious guns.
…manufacturing is contracting.
…the GDP plunged to 1.9%.
…wages just fell for only the fifth time in 33 years.
…that the Administration hides its White House guest list in plain sight.

And, there’s more -
– Imperious edicts on immigration, contrary to Constitutional checks and balances, and Constitutional law.
– Czar appointments to obviate Congressional authority and responsibility.
– Security leaks of serious and threatening magnitude to burnish one’s foreign policy bona fides.
– Taking personal credit for the willing sacrifice and service of others for our nation, and then outing them to the enemy (SEAL Team 6)
– Associations with individuals whose lives have been revealed to be contrary to the interests of our nation.
– Distorting truth about his being overspent by Romney’s campaign to prospective donors and pleading campaign disadvantage and poverty. Check out Jim Geraghty here.

As each of these points are considered, I repeat: Character – Integrity – Trust. Words matter, and these words in particular as we prepare to choose the next President of the United States. Character, integrity and trust are measures and standards that we must consider when entrusting the leadership of our nation to the next POTUS.

By any measure, Barack Obama does not meet the standard.

Complete Book Review of “The Real Romney”

Today, two writers who work for the Boston Globe released a biography of Gov. Romney titled “The Real Romney”. I’ve known about this book in the work for quite some time, and I’ve worried that it will paint Gov. Romney in an unfair light since the Boston Globe has notoriously treated Gov. Romney quite toughly. However, other than the authors’ tired attempts to portray Gov. Romney as someone who will change/hide his opinions to suit whatever political position he aims to hold, the authors couldn’t seem to find anyone with intimate knowledge of Gov. Romney who had much of anything negative to say about him. At worst, people who know Mitt best have a neutral view of him, while the overwhelming majority of people quoted in this book speak glowingly about the man who may become the next President of the United States.

Here are what I found most memorable in the book “The Real Romney”:

Jack Welch: “Mitt Romney, the best I have ever seen!” Gingrich’s Opus: “The Audacity of Capitalism”

Jack Welch is the former Chairman and CEO of General Electric. The 77 year old businessman gave what I think is the single best endorsement of Governor Romney that I have ever seen. This interview, given to Piers Morgan Monday night, is extraordinary on all counts. This clip is only 2:22 minutes in length, but look at the expressions, enthusiasm, and excitement! Rarely do you ever see a man pushing 80 this excited about anything. Literally every phrase and sentence ends with an exclamation point. The best part is at 1:50.

Following are just a few quotes by Mr. Welch from the interview. This video is extraordinary. Watch this short video clip ————————————>

Jack Welch, Former CEO of General Electric

“In this case, [Mitt Romney] really is perfect as a candidate for President of the United States, in these tough economic times!”

“As a presidential candidate, Mitt Romney is the best I have ever seen in the last 50 years!”

“Piers, you pick one person who is better than Romney!”

“You really can’t challenge my statement and pick a better candidate!”

“Look at his background!”

- – - – - SEE WHAT OBAMA IS UP TO BELOW THE FOLD – - – - -

Gingrich has completely lost it I think. Seriously! Quoting incessantly from The New York Times during the debate and in his townhall meetings? Gingrich and Perry are so desperate they are morphing before our eyes into the perfect Obama lemmings. Shills both. Maybe Perry and Gingrich are planning to co-author a new book titled, THE AUDACITY OF CAPITALISM. What do you think? I heard they have reached out to Obama’s publisher for ideas. Brilliant! Perry took the lead with the idea but Gingrich thinks himself smarter and told Perry he was his junior.

In all seriousness, I honestly believe that Gingrich has cast the dye for himself in history this week. As I have said many times in this forum, Gingrich’s peak as a presidential candidate was December 13th, his lucky day. Had he stopped speaking at that moment, he might still be in the hunt. I believe that Gingrich is allowing his wife and others to temper his temper while he expresses anger in the form of vengeance by spending millions in petty immaturity. In days to come, he will probably tell us again that he has matured since he now has grandchildren. Whatever goodwill he developed as Speaker of the House will soon be completely diminished by his base emotions in pursuit of revenge. The irony is that his rhetoric and actions will likely help Governor Romney’s candidacy as Americans are offended by Gingrich’s frontal attack of capitalism. It would not surprise me at all if we witness a backlash in the voting.

Consider that yesterday alone, at least 18 major news sources reported capitalism under attack by Gingrich or Perry or both. Extraordinary no matter how you cut it (see Jayde’s article below for greater detail of these). All 18 are listed here as follows:

Club For Growth’s Chris Chocola: “Newt Gingrich’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital are disgusting. … Attacking Governor Romney for participating in free-market capitalism is just beyond the pale for any purported ‘Reagan Conservative.’ Newt Gingrich should stop his attacks on free markets and apologize to Governor Romney for them.” (Club For Growth, Press Release, 1/9/12)

Does Newt Gingrich Really Want to be President?

Newt Gingrich announced this morning that he would be taking the weekend off in order to “pace” himself. So what will Newt be doing this weekend? He has a book signing scheduled in Virginia and then he will be attending his wife’s French horn concert. The only event Newt has scheduled is a tele-townhall Sunday evening.

With voting in Iowa being a mere 17 days away, it seems an odd time to take a weekend off. One would think that Newt, given his falling poll numbers, would be working feverishly (like the other candidates) to solidify his support and build a strong organization as we head into voting season. Apparently that’s not Newt’s top priority.

The question has been hinted at before by large media outlets but none have just come out and said it, “Does Gingrich even want to be president?” Or perhaps more appropriately, “Does Gingrich have the ‘fire in the belly’ to run for president and take on Obama in the fall?” Remember, Obama is going to have almost one billion dollars of campaign funds at his disposal to defeat the Republican challenger. Conservatives will need a highly motivated, energized and passionate candidate to challenge Obama.

Last summer Newt’s entire staff resigned in protest because, according to them, “Newt wasn’t taking running for president seriously.” Newt had disappeared for a week prior to the resignations and no one in his staff knew where Gingrich had gone. Only when Gingrich returned did they learn that Newt had been gone for a week on a luxury cruise through the Greek Isles with his wife. Understandably, Newt’s staff was furious at the candidate’s disregard for his own campaign. The staff later claimed that Newt seemed more concerned about selling books and DVD’s than running for president.

The New York Times recently wrote of the experience saying:

Mitt Romney’s Health Care Consistency

It may come as no surprise to you but the press has gotten a bit lazy. All too often, the press spews out stories about how Romney has “flip-flopped” on an issue without doing their due diligence and actually finding out if the charges against Mitt are true.

Let’s talk about health care. Despite what Romney’s detractors and rivals would have you think, Romney’s health care policies remain the same today as they always have. Romney’s health care plan for America can be stated simply and succinctly: Romney wants each state to have the same freedom that he had in Massachusetts to innovate and design their own unique health care policies.

Byron York, chief political correspondent of the Washington Examiner, summarized it best when he said this:

On many, many occasions, Romney said he believes Romneycare is a model for some states to follow but would not be a model for all states and certainly not for a federal plan.

“I think it’s a great plan, but I’m a federalist,” Romney said on “Meet the Press” in December 2007. “I don’t believe in applying what works in one state to all states if different states have different circumstances.”

In that 2007 interview, Romney pointed out that a relatively small number, 7 percent, of the Massachusetts population was uninsured. “Texas has 25 percent,” he said. “Given the kind of differences between states, I’m not somebody who is going to say, ‘What I did in Massachusetts I’m going to now tell every state they have to do it the same way.’”

But as much as he stressed federalism, Romney also stressed that he would be happy to see many states adopt his plan. “I think it’s a good model for other states,” he continued. “Maybe not every state but most.” At the federal level, Romney said he would “give every state the same kind of flexibility we got from the federal government.” That’s the Romney position, then and now.

Romney wants the same kind of flexibility for other states that “he had” because Romney received special approval from the federal government (the Bush Administration at the time), to bring about the Massachusetts health care reform plan now known as “RomneyCare.” The federal government allowed for Massachusetts to spend federal dollars in a totally different way than any other state was allowed to do at the time. Romney got approval to use Medicaid money to not just pay for health care services, but to help the poor buy a health insurance policy from a private insurance company. In order to give each state the same flexibility and freedom that he had, Romney wants to “block grant” all Medicaid funding to the states so that states don’t have the excessive rules and regulations that typically come with accepting money from the federal government.

Since the passage of RomneyCare in 2006, Romney has been consistent regarding his plan for other states: States are free to adopt some, all, or none of the MA health care plan.

Here is an interview with Gov. Romney on NPR on April 8, 2006 shortly after RomneyCare was passed where he said this:

Q: Stepping back, what impact do you think this will have outside Massachusetts?
A: Around the country, people are watching because they know this is big. Some on the far left don’t like it because it’s not a single-payer universal coverage program. Some on the far right don’t like it because they don’t like government telling people that they need to get insurance. But the great majority of people, both on the left and the right, believe that this is a step forward.

Q: Can this model be used in other states?
A: My guess is a lot of states will choose to adopt one or another of the measures we’ve put in place here. But most will give it a little time and watch to see what our experience is. That’s the great thing about having 50 states and the principle of federalism. Let us experiment ourselves. Let us learn from one another.

Romney believes that states should have the power to experiment and innovate by giving them Medicaid funds without all the regulations. Additionally, states can be encouraged to innovate by offering “innovation grants” to states that come up with the most promising plans on how to lower costs or increase access to health care in their particular state. These innovation grants would help pay for the cost of implementing the new policy.

Here is what Romney says in his book, No Apology:

“My own preference is to let each state fashion its own program to meet the distinct needs of its citizens. States could follow the Massachusetts model if they choose, or they could develop plans of their own. These plans, tested in the state ‘laboratories of democracy,’ could be evaluated, compared, improved upon, and adopted by others.”

In summary, Romney’s health care policies remain the same today as they have from the beginnning. Romney’s health care plan for America is simply to give each state the same freedom that he had in Massachusetts to innovate and design their own unique health care policies by block granting Medicaid funds and providing “innovation grants.” From the outset Romney has said that states are free to adopt some, all, or none of the Massachusetts health care law and that the MA health care model would not work in all states. Romney has always emphasized state-level initiatives to improve health care and certainly never advocated a federal plan.

In regard to the press, it’s disappointing that the press continues to mindlessly repeat exaggerations and supposed flip-flop stories without doing the research to confirm whether the stories are true, or if a political opponent is behind the exaggerations. As Romney supporters, we can make a difference. If you read an article that falsely claims Romney has flip-flopped or distorted Romney’s views, send them an email. Having sent many such emails myself, I can tell you that these emails are often read and considered. For example, there used to be a lot of stories in the press stating how RomneyCare was bankrupting the state of Massachusetts. We don’t hear that story being told much anymore because most news organizations now see that it is false. Sending a short email where you back up your claim with links can make a big difference.

Democrats Attempt to Deceive Michiganders and Mitt Romney Fights Back + Stephanopoulos Interview

Not only are democrats running newspaper ads against Mitt in Michigan, but the DNC has a new video that attempts to make Mitt feel unwelcome in the state of his birth. Mitt is fighting back with the truth in interviews, with a great op-ed, and with the following video:

Ahead of tonight’s debate in Michigan, Gov. Romney has decided to take the battle back to the democrats who have been trying to deceive the voters in Michigan into thinking native son Mitt Romney doesn’t care about Michigan and wants to see Michigan fail. CNBC has Mitt’s op-ed titled “President Obama has Failed Michigan” on their front page. You should read the entire op-ed. It’s great to see Mitt go on offense in one of the only areas he’s been playing a little defense on. For those of you who remember, the Democrats have been trying for years to twist Mitt’s words from a 2008 op-ed to make voters think Mitt is heartless and callous when anyone who reads the piece will see that Mitt is pragmatic and perhaps clairvoyant. He was exactly correct on his prescription for the domestic auto industry, but President Bush and President Obama wasted billions of taxpayer dollars before they came to the realization that Mitt had been right all along.

I wish I could say these attacks on Mitt have had no effect on Michigan voters, but I have had numerous conversations with people here in Michigan who were fooled by these democratic attacks on Mitt. Back in June, Mitt Romney Came to Michigan and Liberals Had a Hissy Fit. Thanks to that experience and others, I didn’t need to wait for the proof that the occupy movement was in coordination with the labor unions because their chants are exactly the same. Both groups have been fooled into hating Mitt as well. The good news is that Mitt should win the primary here, but the general election is where the real battle will be. Mitt will turn Michigan red and take those 16 electoral votes if he can prove to Michiganders that the Democrats are lying about Mitt’s love for Michigan.
