(VIDEO) Mitt Romney Announces Candidacy for President in NH: “Obama’s Misery Index Has Never Been Higher”

It’s OFFICIAL!

Governor Mitt Romney announced today that he is a candidate for President of the United States
.

Doug and Stella Scamman, of Scamman Farms in Stratham, New Hampshire, provided the setting for the highly anticipated announcement. Both Scammans spoke glowingly of Romney. (Besides running a huge farming operation, the Scammans both served as state legislators in New Hampshire.) Then, Ann Romney introduced her husband.

With a large American flag on an outbuilding on one side and a big Romney banner rippling in the wind on a barn behind him, Gov Romney strode up stacked hay bales to the microphone and addressed a very large and enthusiastic crowd.

Transcript of Romney’s speech:

Thank you for coming. And I want to thank Doug and Stella Scamman for hosting us on their beautiful farm.

You know, everyone here today can tell a different story. We have different backgrounds and we wake up in the morning and go to different jobs … or, look for different jobs. We go to different churches or maybe don’t go to church so much. I bet some of you have families who go back 200 years or more in New Hampshire. And there must be some who just snuck in across the border, from Massachusetts. I hear the taxes are better over here.

But here we are on a beautiful June day coming together to begin a process that we often, quite naturally, take for granted. But it is really one of the great achievements in the history of the world. For all of our country’s wealth and influence, those are not the source of our greatness. The true strength of America is self-rule, and a government that answers to a free and independent people.

We live in the most powerful nation that ever existed. And it all goes back to a few men and women who had the courage to stand – and even die – for their belief in liberty and equality. Because of their vision, the United States of America is not ruled by a monarchy or controlled by an aristocracy. Though sometimes folks in Washington might act otherwise, we don’t have a House of Lords with inherited power. And as the Red Sox like to remind the New York Yankees, there are no dynasties in America.

Who rules this great nation?

You do. Every four years you decide who will give that State of the Union address, who will set the course of the country, who will be Commander in Chief.

What’s true right here in this New Hampshire farm has always been true in America. Though each of us is different, though each of us will choose to walk a different path in life, we are united by one great, overwhelming passion: We love America. We believe in America.

Today we are united not only by our faith in America. We are united also by our concern for America.

This country we love is in peril. And that, my friends, is why we are here today.

A few years ago, Americans did something that was, actually, very much the sort of thing Americans like to do: We gave someone new a chance to lead; someone we hadn’t known for very long, who didn’t have much of a record but promised to lead us to a better place.

At the time, we didn’t know what sort of a President he would make. It was a moment of crisis for our economy, and when Barack Obama came to office, we wished him well and hoped for the best.

Now, in the third year of his four-year term, we have more than promises and slogans to go by.

Barack Obama has failed America.

When he took office, the economy was in recession. He made it worse. And he made it last longer.

Three years later, over 16 million Americans are out of work or have just quit looking. Millions more are underemployed.

Three years later, unemployment is still above 8%, a figure he said his stimulus would keep from happening.

Three years later, foreclosures are still at record levels.

Three years later the prices of homes continue to fall.

Three years later, our national debt has grown nearly as large as our entire economy.

Families are buried under higher prices for food and higher prices for gasoline.

It breaks my heart to see what’s happening in this country.

These failing hopes make up President Obama’s own misery index. It’s never been higher. And what’s his answer? He says this: “I’m just getting started.”

No, Mr. President, you’ve had your chance. We, the people on this farm, and citizens across the country are the ones who are just getting started.

Long after his speech was over, Mitt and Ann greeted the large crowd of well-wishers. I’ll finish this article with Gov Romney’s final remarks:

These last two years have not been the best of times. But while we’ve lost a couple of years, we have not lost our way. The principles that made us a great nation and leader of the world have not lost their meaning. They never will.

We know we can bring this country back.

I’m Mitt Romney. I believe in America.

And I’m running for President of the United States.

Reminder: Romney will be on the Sean Hannity show tonight on FOX News. Tomorrow morning, June 3rd, he will hold his first Town Hall meeting at 8:30 AM EDT at the University of New Hampshire Manchester. Later in the evening, he’ll speak at the Faith and Freedom Coalition in Washington D.C.

LIVE CHAT & FEED – Mitt Romney Announces He’s Running for President! 12:30 EST

Full text as prepared for delivery can be found here.

mitt romney drudge

I’ve been looking forward to today’s announcement since February 7th, 2008 and it looks like Matt Drudge is excited about it as well.

Going to be a great day RT @Mitt_NH #Mitt2012 officially begins today in NH at 12:30 pm http://mi.tt/mfcyyXless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Also, Mitt has a new way to show your support for his candidacy on facebook:

This effort is not about more rhetoric. It’s not about a person, or politicians giving speeches – it is about the cause of restoring American greatness. Take a picture of yourself, family, or friends with a sign to show you Stand with Mitt

The new MittRomney.com is here. Check it out! Tagg Romney wrote about Mitt’s announcement:

My Dad made a serious speech today about the serious jobs crisis that we are facing as a nation. The weak economy and lack of jobs are what has compelled him to get in this race. That’s why ultimately I think he should and will win both the nomination and the presidency—with skills that he has learned in the private sector, he has shown over and over that he can take over troubled situations and make them better. He did it at hundreds of companies as the CEO at Bain Capital, at the scandal-ridden and deficit-plagued Olympic games, and as Governor of Massachusetts.

When he assumed leadership of the Olympics, they had a $400M budget deficit. When he was finished, he put on one of the most successful games ever on U.S. soil and turned over a $100M profit to the city of Salt Lake. When he was elected Governor of Massachusetts, the state was in a recession and losing jobs, and the state budget was looking at a $3B deficit. When he left 4 years later, the unemployment rate was lower, the state was creating thousands of jobs every month and he left behind a $2B rainy day fund.

It was a great privilege to attend the announcement at the Scamman farm in NH today. Seeing 1,000 people turn out to hear him is encouraging and leads me to believe that the country is ready for a someone who can lead on jobs and the economy. So many people today told me stories about hardship they are having to go through as a result of the recession.

His announcement today that he has decided to run for President is the first step to help our nation out of its economic troubles. The USA is now facing a string of record-setting budget deficits at the same time that the economy is sputtering and leaving millions of good people unable to find good jobs. President Obama has tried to borrow his way out of a crisis, making matters worse. I believe America wants a leader who not only will talk about cutting spending and creating jobs, but who has shown time and again that he can actually do it.

PS – My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims of the storms last night in Western MA. It was such a tragedy and such a poignant reminder of what is truly most important.

June is Bustin’ Out All Over with Good News for Romney: Leads Iowa Poll, Executive Experience Matters

June is bustin’ out all over
with good news for Mitt Romney: a good poll, a good read, and an exciting presidential announcement tomorrow!

New Iowa Poll - ROMNEY LEADS:

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney leads in Iowa according to a new survey by Public Policy Polling. The poll was conducted between 5/22/11-5/30/11 and included 491 Iowa Republicans. The full results of the poll will be released Wednesday morning, but MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show received an exclusive partial first look (from which I got my screen grab, see left) of the top three contenders.

Among Iowa Republicans, presumably likely to vote in the crucial Iowa Caucus, the first electoral contest of the primary season, Mitt Romney placed first with 21%, followed by a two-way tie for second with Sarah Palin and Herman Cain, the Georgian founder of Godfather’s Pizza, at 15%.
[...]
The PPP survey adds further credence to Romney’s reputation as the nominal nominee. Romney now leads in Iowa and New Hampshire, whose primary follows Iowa’s, as a CNN/WMUR survey published in late May had him as the preferred candidate of 32% of Republicans in the New England state.

More here.

David Frum (CNN) has written a fine article asking why the media obsesses with other GOP candidates (including those who are a ‘maybe’) while ignoring Governor Romney. Is it celebrity versus governing ability?

“Romney’s long-standing advantage is dismissed as pure name-recognition.”

[...]
Meanwhile, Romney continues to raise money, collect important backers and ride along in first place in the polls.

Why?

Well maybe it is all name ID.

Or maybe — does this give voters too much credit? — they are thinking about the close match between skills Romney has and the skills needed in a president.

What do presidents do?

Among other things:

Presidents set goals and priorities. That’s easily said, but hard to do. The natural temptation is to accumulate goals and priorities atop each other. (See Clinton, Bill, State of the Union addresses of.) But if everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. (See Clinton, Bill, presidency of.) To govern is to choose. To choose requires extreme mental discipline: This I do first, this I do second if I can, this must wait for third, these next 997 things probably don’t get done at all.

Presidents align means with ends. Congress is the place where the American people register their wishes: Generous Medicare and Social Security benefits and low taxes; global military predominance but no casualties; perfect airline security with no personal inconvenience. It’s the president’s job to bring the system into balance, to set budgets, to force tradeoffs.

Presidents are deal-makers. There’s a story told about Harry Truman in the last days of his presidency, awaiting the transition to Dwight Eisenhower after the election of 1952. Truman supposedly said to an aide, “Poor Ike. He’ll sit at this desk. He’ll say ‘do this’ and ‘do that.’ And nothing will happen! It won’t be like the Army at all.” The president cannot tell Congress what to do. He can’t tell a governor what to do. He can’t even safely tell the CIA what to do. (If they don’t like it, they’ll leak against him.) And that’s even before we get to foreign governments. A president doesn’t get what he wants. A president gets what he negotiates.

Those requirements happen to look a lot like the skills Mitt Romney brings to the job. And they may be the skills for which Republicans — and Americans — most yearn at the moment:

– The war in Libya, now dragging on for months with no visible strategic goal, reveals an ominous failure of priority-setting.

– The terrifying national debt represents the country’s accumulated inability to reconcile what it wants and what it is prepared to pay for.

– The failure to lift the debt ceiling — and the intensifying risk of a default on the nation’s debts — shows a staggering failure of the Obama administration’s deal-making.
[...]
Is Obama vaporous and utopian? Maybe what Americans are hearkening for is the analytic ability and negotiating prowess of the former CEO of America’s most successful management consulting firm. And just possibly, Republican primary voters have the self-control not to let the controversy over Romney’s health care record cloud their respect for their front-runner’s genuine executive abilities.

(Video) Mitt Romney’s Interview on TODAY: “I Can Get Our Economy Going Again”

While Mitt and Ann Romney were enjoying time with family over Memorial Day weekend at their home in New Hampshire, they had a few extra guests. Jamie Gangle, national news correspondent from TODAY and her crew dropped by to ask Mitt a few questions about his upcoming presidential bid…

Politico:

As Mitt Romney prepares to officially roll out his presidential campaign later this week, he’s giving President Barack Obama an ‘F’ for the last two years.

“It’s failed,” the former Massachusetts governor said of the Obama presidency in an interview taped over the weekend at his New Hampshire home that aired Tuesday morning on NBC’s “Today.”

“He’s been one of the most ineffective presidents at the job at hand that I’ve ever seen,” Romney said. “The number one issue he faced walking in the door was an economy in fast decline. He didn’t cause it, but he made things worse.”

Romney, who is set to formally launch his campaign on Thursday, said he’s running because “I believe I can get our economy going again.”
[...]
“If I become president, I will repeal Obamacare,” he said, repeating a promise he’s made central to his campaign. “My bill was 70 pages. His bill is 2,700 pages. In those extra 2,630 pages, he’s doing a lot of stuff that is just devastating to the health care system in this country. He’s wrong.”

Romney and his wife Ann also pushed back against the perception that he’s too buttoned-up. He uses an iPad to listen to country music and the Beatles, he said, and has read the “Twilight” books.

Des Moines, Iowa Presidential Forum: Mitt Romney’s Smokin’ Hot Speech!

Scroll to the bottom for complete video (including Q&A) of the event…

It was a was busy day for Mitt Romney in Iowa today…

The morning began with The Gov speaking to employees at AgVision Agriculture Software:

Romney: Obama’s policies delayed economic recovery

Ankeny, Ia. – President Obama’s administration has added to business uncertainty and delayed economic recovery, Mitt Romney told agriculture business owners this morning.

“That’s one of my pet peeves of the current administration,” Romney said. “They’ve added so much uncertainty to the overall economy at the very time that businesses need to have greater certainty so that it can get capital, make loans, carry on its business, higher people, raise incomes.

He continued: “That’s one of the reasons that I view this downturn has taken such a long time from which to recover.”

(emphasis added ) Continue reading here.

Romney also did a walk-and-talk event today before being the kick-off speaker at the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Presidential Forum Speaker Series. The event was held in the State Historical Building in Des Moines, Iowa and was sponsored by the Greater Des Moines Partnership, Mediacom and IowaPolitics.com. CNN also provided livestream coverage.

Romney was delivering an excellent no-teleprompter, no-note speech about Obama’s lack of private sector experience and over-reaching policies i.e. Card Check, Cap ‘n Trade, Obamacare, debt spending, depressed economy, struggling home market, and more. Then, this happened:

Burned popcorn ends Mitt Romney’s speech after 27 minutes

After a fire alarm sounded 27 minutes into Mitt Romney’s speech, he decided to cut off the event for safety reasons.

“Uh-oh, they want to get us out of here, don’t they,” he said.

When the alarm paused, he continued speaking, tossing out some jokes. “I wasn’t trying to get out of tough questions,” he said with a laugh.

But the alarm resumed and, citing safety first, he asked everyone to evacuate.

Romney stood just outside the doors in the covered passenger dropoff driveway, talking to Iowans amid a pack of reporters until a state cultural affairs official ordered everyone to cross the street.

“There are things in this building that could blow up,” said the official, Maureen Korte, director of special projects and programming for the State Historical Society of Iowa, as she urgently hustled people away from the building.

The fire department arrived within minutes.

Just as Romney climbed into a waiting Chevy Suburban, Korte yelled, “All clear!”

Good thing The Gov is such a good sport! Being the first speaker for the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Presidential Forum, he helped them work out the kinks – like keeping inattentive popcorn aficianados away from the microwave…

Romney’s SEVEN HABITS FOR HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL ECONOMIES and the entire Iowa event including the Q&A below the fold (more…)

Exclamation Point on Mitt Romney’s Very Good Week: Meets with S. Carolina Small Business Owners

Gov Mitt Romney met with small business owners at Meetze Plumbing in Irmo, South Carolina. The event was organized by S.C. Rep. Nathan Ballentine. 5/21/11

South Carolina was the exclamation point on a very good week for Mitt Romney today!

Romney’s first visit to the Palmetto State this election cycle began with a morning event at the home of S.C. Representative Nathan Ballentine. Gov Romney then attended an informal meeting, arranged by Ballantine (one of Gov Nikki Haley’s top lieutenants in S.C.’s legislature), at Meetze Plumbing in Irmo. The gathering provided an intimate setting for community business owners to voice their concerns about staying viable in this economy.

*Ballentine tweeted earlier this morning:

Enjoyed hosting @MittRomney in our home and our community today! Thanks to everyone (especially the business owners) who attended!

Hoping to blunt Romney’s foray into South Carolina, an “Independent” group, consisting of former Obama White House Staffers and former S.C. Gov. Jim Hodges (Dem), released a negative ad which coincided with The Gov’s visit. It ran on local TV stations.

Romney was undeterred:

Irmo, South Carolina (CNN) – Mitt Romney spoke to a button-downed group of small business owners Saturday in the early primary state of South Carolina, but with frequent nods to the Constitution and states’ rights, he sounded like he might have been at ease addressing a Tea Party rally instead.

Romney, who donned jeans and rolled-up shirtsleeves for his first visit to South Carolina as a potential Republican presidential candidate, questioned President Barack Obama’s understanding of the role of government and basic economic matters.

“I believe in the Constitution,” Romney said. “I believe in what the Constitution said, that the government that would deal primarily with citizens at the local level would be local and state government, not the federal government. I don’t think the president respects states like I do.”

“I respect the rights of states to come up with their own answers and their own solutions to compete with one another,” he added.

The former governor’s argument conveniently dovetails with his aggressive defense of the health care plan he implemented in Massachusetts, which has drawn scorn from some conservatives because of its strong resemblance to President Obama’s health care law.

Later, taking questions from the roughly 30-member audience, Romney went out of his way to address the elephant in the room.

“Someone’s got to ask me about health care right?” Romney said with a chuckle, prompting several voters to raise their hands.

He responded that, if elected, he would immediately repeal “Obamacare” and give states block grants to develop their own health care programs.
[...]
Romney cited a complaint filed by the National Labor Relations Board that could halt construction of a new Boeing facility in South Carolina. The North Charleston plant is expected to create thousands of jobs.

“How in the world can the president justify the federal government taking power from South Carolina and not allowing South Carolina to compete on a fair and level playing field?” he asked. “It’s simply unexcusable.”

(my emphasis)

Romney was also asked about Rep. Paul Ryan’s plans for Medicare:

Romney responded that he will roll out his own ideas for Medicare at a later date but blasted the president for not coming up with his own solution.

While he applauded Ryan for thinking seriously about fixing the entitlement debt burden, Romney said Ryan’s plan “is not the same as my plan.”

“The Ryan plan and my plan are on the same page,” he said. “We have the same objectives. My plan is different than his. It’s not identical.”

AP:

A crowd of about 40 in a hot warehouse stacked with plumbing supplies cheered when he said it was time for politicians to spend less time thinking about getting re-elected and more time on “thinking about how to get the country on the right track and put Americans back to work.”

Mitt Romney fills containers with food from Farm Boys restaurant in Irmo, S.C. to serve later at a meeting with local business leaders. 5/21/11

Although Governor Nikki Haley was unable to attend the event due to scheduling, Romney spoke with her on the phone on Friday. Hayley’s spokesman, Rob Godfrey, said this:

“They were just touching base,” Godfrey said. “The governor told Governor Romney she was sorry they couldn’t catch up this time, and he let her know that he’d be back often.”

After the confab concluded, Romney treated the audience to trays of barbecued pulled pork, hush puppies and jugs of iced tea (which he and his staff purchased beforehand from Farm Boys restaurant).

*Note on S.C. Rep. Nathan Ballentine:

Did you know? Nathan doesn’t keep his State House salary. He donates his salary to local community groups and organizations and in 2006 designated funds specifically to scholarships for deserving seniors in our community.

Who else does this sound like?

UPDATE 3 by Ross: Interesting insight here.

The issue at hand is, what does that mean for Gov. Nikki Haley? Ballentine and Haley, former deskmates in the House, rarely make a move without the other. Haley supported Romney during the 2008 primary, and Romney endorsed Haley during her campaign for governor. Miss. Gov. Haley Barbour and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin did as well.

But, with Barbour out and Palin unlikely to run, and her best friend siding with Romney, is this a sign Haley is with the Romney camp, too?

Mitt Romney Talks With Crowd in Arlington TX Restaurant, Obama on Menu

Amid the wafting aroma of wood fired slow roasting barbecued brisket, Governor Romney chewed the fat with an eager crowd at Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q (similar to photo) in Arlington, Texas yesterday. He spoke on foreign policy, our comatose economy, why we need to lower taxes, balancing the budget, and education.

Romney also complimented Gov Rick Perry.

He didn’t compliment President Obama:

Romney takes jabs at Obama in Arlington appearance

ARLINGTON — Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney dropped in at a barbecue restaurant Thursday, taking jabs at President Barack Obama for his economic and healthcare policies and newly espoused stance on a Palestinian state.

Romney also heaped praise on Gov. Rick Perry, whom commentator Rush Limbaugh has been advancing as a candidate for president in 2012.

“He’s done a heck of a job,” Romney said of Perry, citing the state’s business-friendly environment. “The rest of the country could learn a lot of lessons from Gov. Perry.”

Romney drew an enthusiastic midafternoon crowd at Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q off Interstate 20 in Arlington, after local Republican groups publicized the appearance over the weekend. Dressed down in bluejeans and a button-down shirt, he reeled off a string of one-liners, signed autographs, and posed for pictures before sitting down to a $9 lunch of a pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw and beans with several of the restaurant’s managers.

Romney accused Obama of having “thrown our ally Israel under the bus” after Obama on Thursday laid out his vision for the Middle East, including a Palestinian state based on borders in place before the Six-Day War of 1967, in which Israel seized the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

“You stand by your friends,” Romney said, drawing one of several ovations.

Romney also poked fun at Obama’s handling of the economy, telling the crowd “it helps if you’ve had a job.”

(my emphasis)

The crowd of about 200 was described as a ‘mix of tire kickers and others who said they were firmly in Romney’s camp.’

David Smith, a Dallas financial analyst who unsuccessfully challenged U.S. Rep Pete Sessions in last year’s Republican primary, said he’s backing Romney because of the governor’s business background.

Smith said the Republican Party needs to settle quickly on a nominee during the primaries. “We can’t have a long, protracted battle like we did in ’08,” he said.

UPDATE
In Houston, Romney raised more than $600,000 at a fundraiser hosted by Mica Mosbacher, a national co-chair of John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign and the widow of former U.S. Commerce Secretary Robert Mosbacher.

President Obama has Thrown Israel Under the Bus

President Obama gave his anticipated Middle East Speech. This speech was particularly important because the President’s foreign policy stances in regards to the Middle East seem so incoherent and devised on a case-by-case basis. As Governor Romney said at CPAC, “I surely hope that at some point in the near future, the President will finally be able to construct a foreign policy, any foreign policy.” However, Gov. Romney and all of us are horrified by what the President revealed today. Despite warnings that President Obama may be the most anti-Israel President in our nation’s history, this situation is something we’ve hoped we would never have to confront. Many Americans are struggling to make sense of what President Obama said today.

The Drudge Report picked up on The Hill reporting that Gov. Romney led republicans in criticizing the speech:

Romney strongly criticized Obama, who, in a speech at the State Department, called for Israel to return to its border lines as drawn before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

‘President Obama has thrown Israel under the bus. He has disrespected Israel and undermined its ability to negotiate peace,’ Romney said in a statement.

‘He has also violated a first principle of American foreign policy, which is to stand firm by our friends,’

The timing of this speech by our President is even more despicable. Israel’s Prime Minister is scheduled to address Congress tomorrow and that fact explains why President Obama made this speech when he did. The speech wasn’t scheduled at all until Prime Minister Netanyahu announced he was coming to the U.S. to address Congress. Trying to upstage an American ally like this is unbelievable. President Obama treated Prime Minister Netanyahu horribly on his last visit and this treatment is even worse. Here’s what Netanyahu said when he heard about President Obama’s speech today:

Netanyahu, in keeping with his previous statements, called the proposal militarily ‘indefensible’ in a statement. ‘Israel believes that in order for peace to prevail, the establishment of a Palestinian state cannot come at the expense of the State of Israel’s existence,’ he said. ‘The Palestinians, and not only the United States, must recognize Israel as the Jewish people’s nation-state’.

President Bush signed an agreement with Israel in 2004 that we would never ask Israel to return to pre-1967 borders in return for their concessions. Today, President Obama essentially ripped the agreement up and threw it away. Israel didn’t make this agreement with President Bush. Israel made this agreement with the United States of America.

What makes this even more disappointing to the Jewish community is that President Obama is scheduled to deliver an address at the AIPAC Policy Conference this weekend. The group sent out an e-mail to attendees before the President threw Israel under the bus today urging members to applaud the President and essentially not boo. That is going to be even harder to accomplish now.

OneNewsNow is conducting an online poll asking “How would you rate Barack Obama’s treatment of Israel since he took office?” Feel free to make your opinion known by voting in that poll.

If you’re still confused by this whole ordeal, Dr. Charles Krauthammer explains “What Obama’s MENA Speech Means“.

UPDATE
Democratic senior statesman Ed Koch says Israel is facing its “most dangerous and critical period” and he is ready to break with his party in the next presidential election over President Obama’s policies on the Middle East. the former New York City mayor said, “Mitt Romney correctly summed it up when he said that President Obama has once again thrown Israel under the bus.

Add Ed Koch to the growing list of people who regret voting for President Obama in 2012 and who will likely vote for Gov. Romney in 2012!

What Happens When President Obama Doesn’t Get His Way?

President Obama’s administration shut out a reporter from the Boston Herald from his Wednesday fundraising event in Boston. You might think that it would be insane for a politician to treat an important blue-state newspaper like this with an election coming up relatively soon, but hey, you’re not the President of the United States so what do you know!?

In any regard, what is the reason the Boston Herald was treated so poorly? The Obama administration is angry that Mitt Romney’s op-ed “The Obama Misery Index Hits a Record High” was put on the front page. We’ve all suspected that Gov. Romney is the candidate President Obama fears most, but can there be any doubt now? President Obama just can’t get Mitt Romney out of his head.

Fortunately for truth-seekers everywhere, Gov. Romney fired back at President Obama for barring the Herald from full access to the presidential visit to Boston yesterday.

‘I know the president and the White House are very sensitive about anyone who talks about the failures in the economy,’ Romney said. ‘They’re in denial about putting people out of work and the under-employed. When the Herald speaks the truth, they lash out.’

‘I think the president’s campaign promises in too many cases have gone by the boards. The transparency pledge was the first to go,’ Romney said. ‘The inclination toward retribution and lashing out toward people who disagree with his economic posture is only the latest chapter.’

‘I think it’s very hard for a Republican administration to try and punish the media for a story they don’t like,’ Romney said. ‘And this is not in keeping with the First Amendment principles that have governed the White House.’

If you actually click on either of the Boston Herald articles, they both link to Mitt’s original op-ed that the administration seems to angry about, so all President Obama has achieved is to bring even more attention to Gov. Romney’s op-ed. I can’t wait to see how the President reacts when Gov. Romney actually releases the Obama Misery Index and the American People have a visual depiction of how terrible President Obama’s policies have been for our economy!

UPDATE
Hugh Hewitt asks “Why is President Obama Trying to Raise Governor Romney’s Negatives?

“It is almost as if the president wanted to make sure that Romney wasn’t the GOP nominee.” Yeah, almost ;)

Romney Attends Arizona Fundraiser, Hires Evangelical Sr. Adviser, Heads to South Carolina

It’s turning out to be a BIG, busy week for Governor Romney.

After his $10.25 million lollapalooza fundraiser on Monday, The Gov stopped by The Grand Canyon State for a couple of days to continue meeting with concerned citizens. Ever mindful of Obama’s projected $1 billion reelection piggy bank, a fundraising reception in Tempe, AZ was also on his schedule:

A veteran public relations consultant has joined Romney’s campaign team. Evangelical Mark DeMoss, founder of the nation’s largest PR firm exclusively serving Christian causes, will serve as senior adviser to Team Romney. Besides his outstanding credentials, what is unique about DeMoss is that he felt so strongly about Governor Romney on the very first day he met him, he told The Gov he wanted to work for him and wouldn’t take any pay.

Mark DeMoss is currently president of the DeMoss Group, which is a large Atlanta-based public relations agency that focuses on serving Christian leaders, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

Governor Romney is uniquely qualified and competent to lead our country out of turbulent economic times and create jobs,” DeMoss said in a statement released by Romney’s exploratory committee. “He has worked in government long enough to know how government works, but not so long that he only knows how to work for the government.”

The campaign press release did not mention any religious component to DeMoss’s role, although in 2008 he was on the Romney campaign’s Faith and Values Steering Committee and spoke out prominently about why evangelical Christians should not discount Romney because of his Mormon faith.

DeMoss said in an interview later that he would play a similar role this time.

“I’ll reach out to evangelicals I’m sure, because I know that audience pretty well,” he said. “I’ll help organize meetings, to get people of influence in front of the governor or get him in front of them.”

UPDATE: More good South Carolina news today… Romney hires former Bush campaign staffer for SC

COLUMBIA, S.C.—Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will use one of former President George W. Bush’s campaign lieutenants as a top South Carolina adviser to his presidential exploratory committee.

Romney’s campaign said Thursday that David Raad will be a senior adviser.

In 2000, Raad was Bush’s regional director in South Carolina’s northwestern counties. He went on to work for the U.S. State Department and returned to direct Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign in Missouri.

Great to have @DaveRadd on board in SC. He has a long history of success and I look forward to working with him as we move forwardless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply
