Senior Staffers vs Traveling Press Corps

Taking a quick break from presidential debate preparations, Mitt Romney today donned a t-shirt and shorts to cheer on a bit of friendly beach brouhaha. Spirits were high and Secret Service personnel dotted the beach as reporters, who cover Romney on the campaign trail, and senior staffers were getting set to kick up some sand in a game of flag football on Florida’s beautiful Delray Beach.

“Let’s see; look at the captain. Gail’s a captain, is that right? Got a bracelet for you. This is a “Clear eyes, full heart, America can’t lose, all right?” Romney said to Gail Gitcho, his communications adviser.

“Ashley’s a captain. There ya go, look at that,” Romney said to The New York Times Ashley Parker.

“There ya go; shake hands, shake hands,” Romney told Gitcho and Parker.

Gitcho and Parker shook hands, and then Romney asked Parker if she was going to call the flip in the air.

“You’re going to call it really? You want it to hit the ground?” he asked her.

“You can catch if you want,” Parker said.

Romney decided to throw it up and let it drop. Parker called tails, and after searching for the coin in the sand, Gitcho found it and announced that it was tails.

“Tails it is! That’s the last call you guys are getting,” Romney good-heartedly declared.

Before the game started, Romney looked over his team and and jocularly added “Where’s Chris Christie when we need him? He’s our line.”

Romney, who regularly plays football with his family, watched the first play of the game. Then, with less than 48 hours to go until the third and final debate showdown with Obama, headed off to get back to prepping.

Guess who showed up during the course of the game? Mom-to-five-boys Ann Romney. She got in the mix and threw the touchdown that tied the game! Atta girl!

Final score? 14 to 14.

Piers Morgan: “Romney Might Just Save America”, Romney Sons Stop By

(Photo – Win McNamee/AFP)

Looking back at the week, did you catch the Romney sons (minus Dr. Ben) on ‘Piers Morgan Tonight’? They were welcomed to Morgan’s television set the day before the second presidential debate, on Oct 15, 2012.

Besides asking about new brother, ‘Tugg’, Piers Morgan asked the four if they are considering what life might be like as the ‘First Family’. His cretinous slipping in of the term “irrational” in his question regarding the positive poll response for Governor Romney after his first presidential debate was… coyly CNN-ish.

The sons concurred that their father’s first presidential debate was a definite plus, and also added that once the vice-presidential pick was chosen, Congressman Paul Ryan, that’s when people began to really pay attention.

The response to how they might deal with being America’s First Family?

Craig Romney summed it up, “To borrow a sports cliche, we’re taking it one day at a time. We honestly are.”

Tagg, Josh, Matt, and Craig Romney were good-humored, entertaining, and are a credit to their parents and the campaign.

A couple of days before the Romney sons appeared on his program, liberal Morgan pierced the hearts of some of his fans by publishing an article giving a half-way endorsement for Romney. And, that’s beastly for Obama:

The great messianic tidal wave of optimism Obama swept in on has been replaced by harsh reality.

He promised Americans tremendous ‘hope’ and ‘change’ and, frankly, they don’t feel he’s given them much hope, or changed very much.

…[U]nemployment is still running at a scarily high 7.8 per cent, meaning 23 million Americans are out of work. Meanwhile, the country’s national debt has risen to a staggering $16 TRILLION, up $5 trillion from when Obama took over. Factor in a still severely deflated housing market, and petrol prices double what they were in 2008, and it all adds up to a pretty miserable economic picture.

That’s where Romney can win. His track record as a businessman is better than almost any presidential candidate ever. He also almost single-handedly turned round the fortunes of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002, after the organising committee turned to him desperate for help.

While throwing a bone to his fans with the false Romney flip-flop meme (don’t cha know Obama evolves?), Morgan also added:

Should Romney now win on November 6, … America will also have elected the squeakiest-clean man ever to run for the presidency in any country in the world.

That’s right, Piers.

It’s high time for some squeaky cleanness in the White House.

Mitt Romney Delivers Big Laughs at Alfred E. Smith Dinner

Amid tuxedoed, evening toggery, Governor Mitt Romney handily charmed the audience at the 76th annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner tonight at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York. In the tradition of the yearly white tie, ‘roasty’ charity fundraiser for Catholic charities, Romney garnered great laughs poking fun at himself and President Obama. Throughout most of the evening, only host Cardinal Timothy Dolan separated Mitt and Ann Romney from Obama.

The event was a refreshing pause from the nitty-gritty election grind.

Romney’s timing and delivery were perfect. See for yourself:

Brilliant, simply brilliant! And, I must say, The Gov looked very dapper and Ann was dazzling.

See the whole thing, including Obama’s remarks, here.

Mitt and Women’s Issues: Told in Part By Ann

The latest straw man to be set aflame by Democrats in the presidential election is Mitt Romney’s supposed lack of energy for womens’ issues. If anyone shows a lack of energy, showing up for only one of two debates, and frankly only about half the time generally, it’s President Obama. For Barack Obama to ask women rely on him to defend their interests in this election is laughable. So let’s clear the air right now: Mitt Romney stands strongly for equal pay for equal work and workplace opportunity.

Let’s hear first from the woman who knows him best, Ann Romney:

President Obama’s Grand Accomplishment Not That Impressive

In the debate the president’s great claim to advancing women’s’ issues was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, which extends the time women can sue for discrimination well after they’ve left their job. While it has a marginal benefit to those women who find out much later they were discriminated against, it has some unintended side effects, such as increasing risk and insurance costs to businesses since they will be subject to suit, well-founded or frivolous, for a much longer period. It also reduces good businesses’ ability to fight frivolous lawsuits, since the relevant witnesses may also be long gone by the time an aggressive trial attorney decides to file suit. It can also result in punishing shareholders of companies who had nothing to do with past discrimination. It was, prior to the Lilly Ledbetter Act, and will remain, whether Mitt Romney or President Obama is elected, against the law to discriminate in pay and workplace advancement. The law President Obama claims as his grand achievement just made it easier to sue, in some ways benefiting the cause of trial lawyers as much as women. Let’s also note this act was signed by President Obama in 2009 and he’s done nothing else of note in the four years since.

Mitt’s Record vs. Democratic Rhetoric

Meanwhile Mitt Romney has a demonstrable record of fighting for women’s rights. When asked in the second debate about his stance on equal pay for equal work, Mitt pointed out he worked to make sure women were equally represented on his cabinet in Massachusetts. He was ranked number one in terms of having women represented in positions of authority. Still the Democrats seized, not upon the substance of his comment or performance, but on his chosen wording, and are trying their best to manufacture an issue out of it. He said he’d had his staff look for qualified women when the applicants came in predominantly male, and they came back, he said, with “binders full of women” qualified for the job. It’s easy enough to understand Mitt was referring to binders full of qualified women’s names and resumes, but that’s just not good enough for Democrats, who clearly aren’t looking out for women’s rights as much as to promote a stereotype of Mitt Romney unencumbered by facts. Kind of like the undeserved stereotypes women have been fighting for years. So I ask, who here is part of the problem versus part of the solution?

I admit my female radar is sometimes deficient, as my cells carry around just one X chromosome. So I realize there are some women’s issues I will not understand as well. I agreed when Ann Romney said in her convention speech that some things are harder on women in ways men do not understand, in particular Obama’s flailing economy that has disproportionately affected women. But I think that trying to turn Mitt’s words into an issue when his actions speak much, much more loudly, insults everyone’s intelligence, and this insult is aimed principally at women. Again my radar may be deficient, but even mine is on alert when hearing this Dem attack. I use as my backup my wife’s comment to me this morning that she couldn’t even stand to watch the news reports of people trying to attack Mitt in this way. Her radar was going off, but not for the reasons the Democrats thought. It’s because they’re trying to make something out of nothing.

But if you still find me hopelessly handicapped by my maleness, let’s also let Mitt’s former lieutenant governor, Kerry Healey, respond:

Amid Autumn’s Heated Campaign, Do Romney/Ryan Families Find Time to Chill?

With the Romney’s attending church today in Belmont, MA and the Governor spending time preparing for Tuesday’s presidential debate, I thought it might be relaxing for Romney/Ryan supporters to look back on the week. Let’s see if the Romney and Ryan families are finding time amid the heated campaign to enjoy October, a bit of Mother Nature’s beauty, and just chill…

Kick off your shoes and take your time.

Ann Romney, bundled up to stay warm, took a detour on the way from Hudsonville, Michigan to the Detroit suburb of Franklin to visit the Peanut Shop in downtown Lansing. She bought some trick-or-treat goodies including cashews and cinnamon almonds she said were Mitt’s favorite. She also picked up some ‘sour jelly pumpkins’ for the grandchildren. Yum! Obama, Failing American Families

Below are two of Mitt Romney’s latest ads, mostly broadcast in swing states. There is no doubt about the battle ahead: Mitt Romney, principles, integrity and freedom vs Barack Obama, the mainstream media, Labor Unions, lies (say and do whatever it takes to retain power), dependency and debt. The lines are drawn and America will have a clear choice. Even so, Obama and his cronies will conform their message with guile and duplicity to try and purchase our society. The agendas are clear, and so must be the message. Obama will shade his message to appeal to all with a “flaxen cord” approach trying to reel us in before binding us in untenable chains of debt and subordination. Romney will deliver a message of reason, rationale and hope for restoring what made America great and exceptional; a strong and free economy; a strong and free America that defends freedom around the world. Romney will also have to call Obama out for his lies and those of the media. The cause is freedom and it is worth the fight!

The messaging of these two ads are indicative of some of what we will see in the future. You have to ask the question, how do you feel when viewing the ads?

Further, the upcoming debates will have a profound affect on the hearts and minds of American’s. Our prayers should be with Governor and Mrs. Romney, and Paul Ryan and their advisors, that they might be endowed with discernment in knowing how to communicate their messages of light and truth that will resonate with American’s and the world, and further how to expose the lies and deceit of those who seek to flatter America to its demise.

Rosh Hashanah Greetings from Mitt and Ann Romney

At sunset this evening, the Jewish New Year shall begin. A time for reflection, it also marks the beginning of Jewish High Holy Days.

Earlier today, Mitt and Ann Romney sent greetings to the Jewish community:

Jewish New Year explained:

To our Jewish friends across the world

from everyone at MRC

sincere wishes for a

Happy Rosh Hashanah!

UPDATE - Iran Tensions Loom Over Israelis on Jewish New Year

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had this message for Jews in Israel and around the world. “I want to wish you all a happy New Year, a happy New Year in your personal lives, a happy New Year for the Jewish people and the Jewish state. The Jewish state and the Jewish people are facing great challenges. Iran is racing to develop nuclear weapons. A rising tide of militancy is sweeping our region,” he said.

Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. But it sees Israel as a Zionist enemy.

Netanyahu says Iran could achieve nuclear weapons capability in just six or seven months, something Israel sees as a threat to its existence.

Netanyahu has accused the United States of failing to get tough on Iran; and despite strong opposition from Washington and the international community, he has threatened to launch a preemptive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The Obama administration says it is not yet ready to draw a red line concerning Iran and continues to pursue a deepening of international sanctions against Tehran.

Ann Romney: “The people hurt the most by this economy have been women” (VIDEO)

Ann Romney , wife of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, speaks at her first solo campaign rally ‘Women for Mitt’ in Findlay, OH on Sept 5, 2012.

Yesterday, FOX News’ Neil Cavuto was lucky enough to have Ann Romney on his show ‘Your World. If you’re like me, any time I get to see Ann the sun shines a little brighter.

Cavuto asked Ann about the election, women’s vote, Governor Romney coming under attack for commenting on unrest in the Middle East, upcoming debates, her knock-out convention speech, and more:

“This is going to be an economic election… The people that have been hurt the most by this economy have been women. They have higher unemployment rates than men. There are more women going into poverty – since the last 40 years.” – Ann Romney

Ann reassured listeners that Governor Romney “gets it”. He will focus on restoring jobs and better paying jobs for women and Americans, and he’ll tackle America’s deficit woes so the unthinkable won’t happen – forcing America’s children and grandchildren to pay for our current outrageous, wasteful excesses.

If you missed Ann’s wonderful, engaging speech on September 5th at the ‘Women for Mitt’ rally in Findlay, Ohio have a listen here.

Cincinnati.com – Sept 5, 2012:

FINDLAY — Ann Romney fired back Wednesday at critics who have accused husband Mitt Romney of being out of touch with average Americans, saying her own bout with multiple sclerosis taught the family what it means to suffer and lose hope.

When people say that we’ve led a charmed life and we don’t relate to people that are having trouble, I want to remind you that I’ve been in a very dark place, and I know what it is like to have no hope,” Mrs. Romney said at a rally for women supporting her husband, the Republican presidential candidate, at the University of Findlay in Ohio. “So believe me when I tell you these words: We are there for you because we know what it feels like.”

She described her struggle with the disease, which coincided with her family’s move to Utah so her husband could oversee preparations for the 2002 Winter Olympics there. She said she lost the use of her right side and had problems getting out of bed, but said that despite initial second thoughts the move turned out well.

“Sometimes when you take a risk like that and you just go and do what you know is the right thing to do, sometimes God looks over you,” she said.

Mrs. Romney has been in remission for years.

I’m telling you, the woman has a gift. Ann speaks with such friendly ease one doesn’t want her to stop.

Ann, keep up the great work and keep telling it like it is!

Democrats Say Romney “Out of Touch” with Middle-class and Minorities - Here’s Why That Line Won’t Work

Photo credit: Austen Hufford/ Daily Michigan

Now that Mitt Romney is the Republican nominee, the Democrats are seeking to damage Romney by portraying him as someone who is “out of touch” with the concerns and difficulties of the middle-class and minorities. Democrats are making the spurious argument that due to Romney’s wealth, he doesn’t understand the struggles of the “common man/woman.” Allow me to provide a few reasons why Romney is not out of touch with everyday Americans and will easily overcome this line of attack.

1) Romney’s Company was voted “Best Employer” in the Nation this Year – Romney founded a company called Bain Capital which was awarded the honor of “BEST EMPLOYER IN THE NATION” according to employee surveys done by a large and reputable website called Glassdoor. Bain Capital even beat other popular companies such as FaceBook and Google. Romney’s company has been in the top 4 every year Glassdoor has run the survey. If Romney can’t relate to the middle class or the average American, why is the company he founded doing so well with its employees who are mostly middle class? Romney was instrumental in establishing the culture within the company that so many of his employees enjoy. Romney’s company provides a powerful example of how “in touch” he is with the average American.

2) Romney Understands the Discrimination and Bigotry Often Felt by Minorities – As a member of a religious minority, Romney has experienced first hand discrimination and bigotry. Due to Romney’s Mormon faith, Romney understands quite acutely the injustices and pain caused by judgements against him simply because of his religion. While I don’t pretend to know whether Romney’s membership in a religious minority will help or hurt him in the election, it is just plain wrong for Democrats to say that Romney doesn’t understand the bigotry and discrimination of minorities.

3) Romney’s Health Care Law in Massachusetts – President Obama’s biggest domestic achievement has been the passage of Obamacare. But if Obamacare represents how “in touch” Obama is with average Americans, then how can Obama claim that Romney is “out of touch” when Obama got his inspiration for Obamacare from Gov. Romney’s health care law in Massachusetts? I cannot count how many Obama surrogates, including Obama himself, have tried to damage Romney’s reputation among conservatives by “thanking” him for the model they used to create Obamacare. So, to the extent that Obamacare represents the type of policy that exemplifies Obama’s connection with average Americans, Romney should easily gain the upper hand.

4) Romney’s volunteer work as lay minister for his church in Boston – During his time as a lay minister for his church, which totals over 20 years of service, Romney spent much of his time meeting with and counseling members of the congregation who were struggling in one way or another. Recently, an article from the LA Times reviewed Romney’s church service over the years and said:

“Romney’s friends and family say his instincts are rooted in his Mormon faith and sharpened over his years as a lay leader in the church. For years, Romney’s church work amounted to a half-time job, as he counseled members of his congregation who were dealing with marital problems, substance abuse and financial difficulties related to lost jobs or health issues.

Often Romney would sit down with a pad and help a couple scratch out their budget — urging them to differentiate between wants and needs. In a privileged life, those experiences had a lasting effect.

“It allowed him to see so many different people and so many different problems that people are facing — to really have empathy for people who are struggling, and to recognize that almost everybody in every walk of life has one sort or another of struggle,” his son Josh said in an interview. “There are so many people out there in need of help or support — he learned a lot of that through those experiences.”

Romney listened and counseled with those members of the congregation for over two decades as they dealt with the typical struggles of the average American. That kind of extensive volunteer work sets Romney apart as a man who does indeed understand the average American

5) Romney’s wife with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – Nothing is more trying to a person’s life than to have a spouse or loved one diagnosed with a debilitating and incurable disease. Romney’s wife of over 40 years has MS and has been treated for breast cancer. Both Mitt and Anne have said publicly many times that one of the most difficult times in their lives was when Anne was diagnosed with MS. For a time, Mrs. Romney was unable to move about the house or even get out of bed due to her MS. Many Americans and their families who are also struggling with intractable health problems would find a very sympathetic ear from Mitt Romney.

6) Romney’s handling of victims from Hurricane Katrina – The LA Times discusses a powerful example of Romney’s compassion that occured during Romney’s time as Governor of Massachusetts:

The Rev. Jeffrey Brown, who heads a faith-based gang intervention group in Roxbury, Mass., and spoke frequently to Romney during his governorship, saw two facets of the man — the executive and the spiritual counselor — come together after Hurricane Katrina when the Massachusetts Legislature provided shelter on Cape Cod for evacuees. Romney wanted members of the black clergy to attend to the arrivals — because he said some would rather talk to pastors than mental health professionals — and asked Brown to lead the effort.

Romney arrived a few days later, telling Brown he wanted to hear the stories directly from the victims, many of whom were from New Orleans’ hard-hit Lower 9th Ward.

“He wanted to make sure that their needs were being met,” Brown said. “He brought 50 state agencies down there, and everybody’s needs were attended to. I’m talking about people who left their houses in such a rush that they forgot their teeth. He had dentists down there to get them their dentures.… He was on it.”

But Brown was most surprised watching Romney interact with victims — praying with them, sitting with them on park benches asking about their families, scooping up children and asking for hugs.

“He was pastoral,” Brown said. “He was that person with those people.”

Romney’s connection with average Americans was exemplified by his compassion to the evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.

In Conclusion, What about JFK? With all the focus Democrats place on Romney’s wealth, what is left out is that JFK, one of the Democrats most beloved presidents, was just as wealthy as Romney, if not more so. In fact, JFK came from one of the richest families in America and then married a woman who was an oil heiress who also had great wealth of her own. Despite JFK’s wealth, JFK was still able to connect with minorities by famously calling federal marshals to allow Blacks to attend the University of Alabama in 1962. Even though JFK was assassinated in 1963, his presidency was instrumental in developing and passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

One very important difference between Romney and JFK, however, is that almost all of JFK’s income and property came from a trust fund created by his rich father and then shared with other family members. Romney, on the other hand, created his wealth for himself through hard work by founding a successful company. Romney did not inherit his fortune from his father.
