The GOP Presidential Endorsement Chart

October 13th, 2011 Nate Gunderson 11 comments

The following is cross-posted here at MRC with permission from Matt Coulter. The original post “Endorsement Chart Update” can be found at Race 4 2012. I appreciate the work Matt has done in gathering and tallying all this info and laying it out in a snappy table. The tally for Mitt is quite impressive.

This afternoon, Romney announced the endorsement of Alaska’s Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell and former U.S. Congresswoman Susan Molinari (NY). In the week since last publishing the endorsement chart, Romney has added quite a few new backers.

The endorsement categories are below, and the list of the endorsers are below the fold. Remember, this does not take into account every endorsement a candidate announces – it is simply an attempt to keep track of some of the more important ones. Therefore, it is not the end all, be all of candidate endorsements – but hopefully it is a useful tool.

  • Group 1: Sitting Governors
  • Group 2: Current U.S. Senators and Representatives
  • Group 3: Current Lt Governors, Attorney Generals, other notable statewide officeholders
  • Group 4: Former Governors, U.S. Senators, and U.S. Representatives
  • Group 5: RNC Members
Group I Group II Group III Group IV Group V
Romney 3 25 13 17 11

Chris Christie stands with Mitt …will you?

Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran, and Illinois Rep. Judy Biggert have endorsed Mitt Romney for president now as well.

Is Rick Perry Intentionally Seeking the Anti-Mormon Vote?

October 7th, 2011 Nate Gunderson 19 comments

Pastor Robert Jeffress

Pastor Robert Jeffress

In five years of blogging for Mitt I have never played the Romney-is-a-victim-of-religious-bigotry card. I never got sucked into the “floating cross” or “are Jesus and Satan brothers?” debates of the 2008 campaign. Sure there are voters out there that may never vote for a Mormon, and I defend their right to think and feel the way they choose. I don’t think it wise for Mitt supporters to claim that he lost in 2008 because of anti-Mormon sentiment – One, because I don’t believe it’s helpful to play the victim card, and two, because I just don’t think such was the case. Romney lost in 2008 because at the end of the day the other guy had more votes.

But today something happened that is not quite like anything I recall in 2008. At the Values Voter Summit today Governor Rick Perry was endorsed and introduced by someone (who I recall very vividly) publicly denounced Mitt Romney as an unbeliever and a member of a cult – from the pulpit of his mega church. That person is Pastor Robert Jeffress of the Dallas First Baptist Church.

The fact that Pastor Jeffress was going to introduce and endorse Perry was published before he spoke today, and I had no doubt as to what the Pastor would say as he has said it many times before.

Here is video of his endorsement today:

The money quote:

“Do we want a candidate who is a good, moral person – or one who is a born-again follower of the lord Jesus Christ?”

What do we make of this? I think Max Twain of Race42012 puts it best:

Mormon card officially played.

Knowing Pastor Jeffress background and past statement, I can come to no other conclusion that Governor Perry is not just willingly, but openly (and with forethought) seeking out the vote of those who are seeking a Christian for president, but more specifically.. not a Mormon.

If the prior evidence is not sufficient for my claim, read what Pastor Jeffress said to press immediately after his introduction of Perry:

Following Debates and Christie/Palin un-announcements, Romney Retakes Lead in RCP Polls and Soars on Intrade.com

October 6th, 2011 Nate Gunderson 1 comment

Debates have consequences. When you don’t prepare you don’t do well, and people will notice.

On August 15th Rick Perry announced his candidacy for the office of President and very quickly surged to front-runner status, a position that Mitt had held for some time. In the last few weeks we have witnessed three GOP debates, and we’ve received news that two major would-be candidates, Chris Christie and Sarah Palin, have declined to enter the race. These events have made a huge impact on the state of the race, which is now entirely different from just 6 weeks ago.

Real Clear Politics has a running average of national polls for the GOP 2012 that includes just the most recent numbers from a variety of polling organizations. The graph below (from RCP) shows the polling trends for each of the candidates. (Romney=Purple Perry=Blue Cain=Red)

Another site I like to follow is Intrade.com, which is online trading exchange website. Real people speculate on the outcome of certain events and basically buy and sell stocks (wager) based on how likely they feel a certain outcome is. It is interesting to follow since these are people who have money on the line and are watching the news and momentum trends with great interest. Below is a graph for the top 3 polling candidates right now and the closing values of their stock going back to the beginning of September. I included in the graph some dotted lines to signify when the debates took place, and when Christie officially declined to enter the race.

My take: Team Romney is soaring high right now and it is evident by the high number of endorsements and fundraisers that are jumping aboard. But Team Romney shouldn’t become complacent (I don’t think they will) because as Perry’s campaign is taking a nose-dive Herman Cain is there picking up much of the slack. It is true Cain is rising very fast in the polls, but whether that rise mounts to a strong challenge against Romney… we will have to wait and see. Much will be decided in the coming debates.

Perry Ads Against Romney Receive “Three Pinocchios” from The Washington Post

September 27th, 2011 Nate Gunderson 9 comments

Three Pinocchios

Though I’m well aware of the facts behind these issues, I take no credit for this researching these specific ads. Glenn “The Fact Checker” Kessler of The Washington Post investigated claims made against Governor Romney, by Team Perry, in two web ads released just yesterday and this morning. His findings: Three Pinocchios (out of four) for the first and a There-are-only-so-many-Pinocchios-one-can-award-in-a-day! for the second.

Video One – Words Have Meanings:

Perry claims the first edition of Romney’s book states that the Mass Health Care was a model for a national plan.

Guest Post: Perry Comes Out Swinging, Knocks Himself Out

September 23rd, 2011 Nate Gunderson 2 comments

Many of you may know Mike Sage of America Needs Mitt. With his permission we are cross-posting his very apt view on last night’s GOP debates. Take it away Mike…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rick Perry
Last night’s Fox News Google Debate started out as something of a snoozer, but it definitely got better as it progressed. It was clear from the beginning that Rick Perry was hoping to land some punches on Romney, but in the end, he only succeeded in hurting himself. Romney, on the other hand, did a masterful job of avoiding any major mistakes, connecting with the audience, staying focused on the issues voters want to hear about, and making Perry seem amateurish and ineffective in his attacks. Just an hour after the debate, Rick Perry’s “stock” at Intrade.com had dropped 12.5%, while Mitt Romney’s had risen by 9%. In the post-debate focus group conducted by Frank Luntz of Fox News, Romney emerged as the undisputed winner of the debate, and a significant number of the audience members stated that they were switching their allegiance from Perry to Romney.
How does a candidate like Rick Perry, who has had a week since last week’s debate to improve his game, manage to deliver a debate performance this time around that was even worse than his underwhelming offering last week? Let me count the ways…
First, he was tentative and uncertain about many of his answers. At times, it seemed he was stumbling around, just hoping to bump into a right answer by pure chance. A prime example was his muddled response to a question about what the U.S. should do in the event that Pakistan loses control over their nuclear weapons. His rambling and incoherent response involved tangents on our relations with India and China, and said nothing at all about nuclear weapons.
He trotted out the same answers that didn’t work last week, and seemed genuinely surprised that they didn’t work this week, either. When asked a question about how his HPV vaccine mandate smacked of corporate cronyism, he once again did his song-and-dance about how much he cares about cancer and how he will always (with much righteous indignation and emphasis on the word “always”) err on the side of life. That’s really great, and all, but the question was about corruption and cronyism, and he never even came close to responding to that.
He attempted to attack Mitt Romney as a flip-flopper on several occasions, but failed miserably each time. When he made a reference to Romney’s book, “No Apologies”, Romney shot back, “I stand by everything I wrote in my book. On the other hand, Governor, you’ve attempted to distance yourself from the things that you’ve written in your book, which was just published 9 months ago!” When Perry continued this particular line of attack, it fizzled badly when it became painfully obvious that it was a canned laundry-list of supposed flip-flops that Perry could barely remember and recite effectively, much less persuasively prosecute.
Transcript of Perry’s response:
I think Americans just don’t know sometimes which Mitt Romney they’re dealing with. Is it the Mitt Romney that was on the side of… against… the Second Amendment before he was for the Second Amendment…was it was..before he was before these social programs, uh, from the standpoint he was standing, uh, for Roe vs. Wade before he was against Roe, uh, Roe vs. Wade… uh… he was… uh for Race To The Top… Uh…[pause]…he’s for Obamacare and now he’s against it…I mean, we’ll wait until tomorrow and, and, and wait to see which Mitt Romney we’re really talking to…
Here’s an idea. Let’s not wait until it’s time to debate President Obama to see if Rick Perry can string some words together into a coherent sentence.
At one point in the debate, Perry made such an inarticulate attack on Romney, that Romney (and much the audience, as well) wasn’t even really sure what the criticism was. At another point, Perry’s attack was swatted away with Romney simply laughing it off and saying, “Nice try, Governor.” The overall effect was devastating to Perry’s credibility, as it became more and more obvious that, as a debater, this candidate was out of his depth. He came across as some one going well out of his way to pick a fight with Mitt Romney, who infuriatingly, wasn’t taking the bait.
Most of the other candidates failed to distinguish themselves much in this debate. Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Herman Cain did very well, scoring some impressive and persuasive points in some of their responses. Unfortunately, Bachmann, Paul, and Johnson were practically invisible at last night’s debate, and Huntsman, as usual, came across like a snarky used car salesman who’s had one too many margaritas at lunch.
Bottom line, Mitt Romney walked away from this debate the clear and unequivocal winner. Some peoples’ eyes were opened, and a few minds were changed last… and that’s a good thing.
Quick and Easy Fact-Checking of RickPerry.org
September 21st, 2011 Nate Gunderson 9 comments
Via Twitter I stumbled upon an article at RickPerry.org and it only took me 2 minutes to find a major flaw in the numbers that blows open Perry’s claim to be the superior job creator. Team Perry responds to a “false, desperate attack” from Mitt’s team that points out while the US added no jobs to the economy in August under Obama (President Zero), Texas actually lost jobs to the tune of minus 1300 under Perry (Governor Sub-Zero).
The tables of data that RickPerry.org provides yield some unintended consequences when placed under the tiniest bit of scrutiny. First, here is the data taken directly from RickPerry.org, though I added a row of data (in red) on the second table for analysis purposes:
While Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts (Jan. 2003 – Jan. 2007):
Private Sector Jobs Jan. 2003 Jan. 2007Change
Massachusetts 2,729,1002,768,60039,500
Texas7,637,8008,395,400757,600
Population 20022006AverageChange
Massachusetts6,431,0006,437,0006,434,000+6,000
Texas21,661,00023,339,00022,500,000+1,678,000
Now this is not too difficult to figure out, just look a the “change” columns. In Massachusetts during Romney’s tenure the state population only grew by 6000, but in the same time MA added 39,500 jobs added to the private sector. In Texas on the other hand (Perry as Governor), the population grew by a whopping 1.6 million but only added less than half that amount of jobs in the private sector, about 750,000.
What is the end result? Obviously in MA that equals a much lower unemployment rate, but oddly enough Texas’ unemployment rate dropped as well. Does that mean the “other” jobs created were actually created in the government? Perhaps that could be why Texas’ government spending has doubled while Perry has been Governor.
The Big Question for Perry: Sure Texas is creating a lot of jobs, but is that rate high enough to match the growth in population? If not, unemployment rates will not go down.
The Cold Hard Facts: #1-Unemployment in Texas hit 8.5% last month, the highest it has been in 24 years! #2-The state of Texas also happens to be 46th out of 50 in poverty rate – 28% higher than the national average!!
If that is a fantastic record of economic prowess, then I have a Texas-sized bridge I want to sell you.
Factcheck #2: Team Perry calls Romney’s campaign “flailing”, but according to Rasmussen (and backed by other polls) in the space of one month Perry’s lead over Romney has shrunk from 11% to 4%. One does not “flail” when they are edging up in the polls. Perhaps this article by Team Perry is “flailing” as they are now edging downward.
~Nate G.
Bonus: On twitter Dave Weigel jokes: So if Perry is Governor Sub Zero, that makes Romney Governor Scorpion. #getoverhere
I was stumped by this for awhile until I recalled my junior-high Mortal Kombat video game days.
