What They’re Saying About the Presidential Duel in Denver – Obama: “Four Snore Years”

The first debate is over!

It was remarkable…

for Romney.

The day after the first presidential debate of 2012 in Denver, CO, this headline from the Boston Herald says it all… (Oct 4, 2012)

I was going to begin this article by saying Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama went eyeball to eyeball last night in Denver, but that wasn’t the case. It was a night of Romney focusing on Obama, looking directly into his eyes, while Obama’s eyes were oft-times focused… downward… as if he was willing the lectern to morph into his teleprompter. And, in my opinion, as if he knew Romney was on to him. The Boston Herald headline above encapsulates the evening.

Romney seemed to relish the opportunity to speak to Americans without the filter of the nefarious news media. He was the man we know and admire – very well-prepared, precise, focused, in control, filled with conviction and compassion, showed humor, aggressive while affable, and was completely at ease.

Obama was flat, subdued, distracted, passive, at times churlish and bewildered that his royal-highness-stature-and-personality wasn’t cutting the mustard. At one point Obama asked moderator Jim Lehrer to move off a topic (a first!).

From the get-go, Obama attempted to set the campaign narrative as not what has happened in the last four years, but what will happen if he’s given four MORE years. He couldn’t be standing on shakier, flakier ground.

Some Obama proponents today are claiming moderator Jim Lehrer was weak or favored Romney. Not so. Obama was given four more minutes of speaking time – over Romney. The Governor delivered far more substance in his allotted time than Obama with his extra OVERtime. And, Lehrer appeared at times to attempt to coach Obama via his questions, trying to prompt him to give a more cogent response.

Last night’s debate aptly illustrated by Gary Varvel, Oct 4, 2012

Clash of the titans? The only titan present in this race is Mitt Romney.

I’m delighted at what is being said about the Duel in Denver (from Mitt Romney Press):

Obama Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter: “And I Think That Mitt Romney, Yes, He Absolutely Wins The Preparation. And He Wins The Style Points.” (CNN’s “CNN Live,” 10/3/12)

ABC News’ Jake Tapper: “It Was Not A Strong Performance By [President Obama].” ABC’s JAKE TAPPER: “Well, I’ve covered President Obama for about six or seven years now and I’ve seen him inspire crowds of tens of thousands and then I also recall the summer of 2007 when he was listless and flat and uninspired and his campaign manager had to knock some sense in him and get him back in the game. Unfortunately for the Obama campaign that’s the Obama I saw on the stage tonight. It was not a strong performance by him.” (ABC, 10/3/12)

Bloomberg’s Joshua Green: “Dominating…” “On Wednesday night, Mitt Romney attempted a hostile takeover of the presidential campaign … dominating President Obama.” (Bloomberg, 10/3/12)

Politico’s Glenn Thrush: “How Tough A Night Was It For The Incumbent? He Even Muffed Some Of The Basics Of Debate 101…” “How tough a night was it for the incumbent? He even muffed some of the basics of Debate 101, struggling to find the right camera to address once or twice during the mostly civil 90-minute exchange.” (Politico, 10/3/12)

After Mitt Romney’s debate performance, his sweet granddaughter rushed on stage to give him a big hug. Oct 3, 2012 (photographer unknown)

Time’s Mark Halperin: “A Performance That Will Both Delight The Republican Base And Make Undecided Voters Take Note. Was The Dominant Figure On The Stage On Almost Every Exchange.” (Time , 10/3/12)

ABC News’ Russell Goldman: “Romney Came Out Swinging In The First Presidential Debate…” “Mitt Romney came out swinging in the first presidential debate, challenging President Obama over his health care reforms, treatment of the economy, taxes and funding for Sesame Street’s Big Bird.” (ABC News, 10/3/12)

BuzzFeed’s Michael Hastings: “For Weeks, President Obama’s Advisers Have Been Lowering Expectations … Maybe The Expectations Weren’t Low Enough.” “For weeks, President Obama’s advisers have been lowering expectations for the debate tonight, both privately and publicly forecasting that the Commander in Chief could deliver a dud. Maybe the expectations weren’t low enough.” (BuzzFeed, 10/3/12)

Time’s Joe Klein: “Mitt Romney Won This Debate. Barack Obama Lost It. I Mean, He Got His Butt Kicked.” “Well, I’m with all the other talking heads: Mitt Romney won this debate. Barack Obama lost it. I mean, he got his butt kicked. It was, in fact, one of the most inept performances I’ve ever seen by a sitting President.” (Time , 10/3/12)

Bloomberg’s Ramesh Ponnuru: “Romney Made The Most Focused Appeal To Middle-Class Voters On The Basis Of How His Agenda Would Help Them…” “Romney made the most focused appeal to middle-class voters on the basis of how his agenda would help them — on energy, on health care, on jobs — that he ever has.” (Bloomberg, 10/4/12)

McClatchy’s Richard Dunham: “The Republican Nominee Appeared Relaxed, In Command Of Facts And Persistently On The Offensive…” “Appearing on stage alongside the incumbent Democrat for the first time, the Republican nominee appeared relaxed, in command of facts and persistently on the offensive during the 90-minute encounter at the University of Denver. Obama, who has not debated in four years, looked rusty and found himself responding to the policy agenda set by Romney.” (McClatchy Newspapers, 10/3/12)

Philadelphia Inquirer’s Kevin Riordan: “Mitt Romney Outran The Incumbent … And Ran Away With The First Debate Of The Presidential Campaign Wednesday.” (Philadelphia Inquirer, 10/3/12)

The Hill’s Erik Wasson: “GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney Was Able To Put President Obama On The Defensive On The Deficit In The First Presidential Debate.” (The Hill, 10/3/12)

NBC’s Betsy Fischer Martin: “Bottom Line: Obama Is Simply Not Accustomed To Being Challenged & Answering Questions For A Prolonged Period. In 2008, He Was.” (Twitter Feed, 10/3/12)

Newsweek’s David Frum: “Romney Consistently Looks At Obama When Obama Speaks. Obama Looks Down When Romney Speaks. Not Alpha Dog Behavior.” (Twitter Feed, 10/3/12)

CNN’s Erin Burnett: “Undecided Dial Test Raw #s Show: #Romney Won The ‘Big Moments’ 7 Comments Scored Over 70. #Obama Had 4.” (Twitter Feed, 10/3/12)

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews: “I Don’t Know What [President Obama] Was Doing Out There…” MATTHEWS: “I don’t know what [President Obama] was doing out there, he had his head down, he was enduring the debate rather than fighting it.” (MSNBC, 10/3/12)

MSNBC’s Ed Schultz: “I Think The President Created A Big Problem … I Don’t Think He Explained Himself Very Well On The Economy.” “I think the president created a big problem for him tonight, for himself. I don’t think he explained himself very well on the economy. I thought he was off his game. I was absolutely stunned tonight. Rachel, you just mentioned about time, the president needs to get in and fight for that time. There’s people that expect him to fight for that time.” (MSNBC’s “Presidential Debate 2012,” 10/3/12)

Bloomberg’s Margaret Carlson: Mitt Romney “Came To Fight.” “Overall, Romney looked like a man who’d gone to every class, pulled all-nighters, done work for extra credit and came prepared to ace the exam. He did it without sweating and by ignoring the proctor. He came to fight.” (Bloomberg, 10/4/12)

The Washington Post’s Marc Thiessen: “The Drubbing Romney Just Delivered To President Obama … This Whole Race Has Indeed Been Turned Upside Down.” “In the wake of the drubbing Romney just delivered to President Obama, I can’t think a better way to describe tonight’s contest. Christie was right. This whole race has indeed been turned upside down.” (The Washington Post, 10/3/12)

CNN: “CNN Poll: Romney Wins Debate By Big Margin” (CNN, 10/3/12)

Oct 3, 2012, (day of the first presidential debate in Denver, CO): 7:57 p.m – Earlier tonight Romney’s Body Man, @dgjackson, tweeted a photo of Mitt’s granddaughter Mia ‘Helping “Poppa” prep’ for the debate.

8:34 p.m. ET: 26 minutes before Mitt Romney would appear before the nation at his first debate with President Barrack Obama, he and family members were photographed backstage relaxed and playing Jenga. (Photo – Mitt’s Body Man @dgjackson, Oct 3, 2012) jenga

A closer look… Relaxed because he’s prepared and ready to go.
(Photo – Charles Dharapark/AP) Oct 3, 2012 *Makes me want to dig out my Jenga game!

Even though panicked Team Obama and Obama himself today are hissing their usual nasty stuff – that Romney lied throughout the debate last night – Romney spoke the truth. And, they couldn’t stop him. Underneath their bravado, they’re panicked and livid. They can’t stand having their carefully constructed Obama facade ripped off.

As far as the debate went, I agree with Pat Buchanan. He said our man, Mitt, could not have delivered a better debate.

No time to rest, though. We must double-down on our outreach efforts for Romney/Ryan! It’s also important to donate here.

UPDATE – Laugh of the day: A sign of how embarrassingly desperate liberals are, Al Gore tried to blame Obama’s debate loss on Denver’s high altitude. Read here.

Now THIS is what a President looks, acts and sounds like!! Mitt came prepared to win and WIN he did!!!
Did you feel our millions of prayers for you Mitt? They were there, and will be there for you in every debate and beyond. We are so proud and grateful for your love and sacrifice for us and the country. Blessings to you and your lovely family and darling grandkids. We will never quit until you’re in the Whitehouse…the fight is on.

  2. Cathy Fritz says:

Thank you, Mitt Romney, for your uplifting encouragement. After four (4) years of wondering where our country is headed, I am reassured that the American dream isn’t gone…we’ve just been waiting for you and Paul Ryan to help us find it, again.

  3. CS says:

As the previous commentor states, the nations praying people sent many up to heaven on your behalf yesterday, and we will continue to until you are the next POTUS of our great country~Thank you & your family for your dedication to help us be heard in exposing the current administration for their fraudulant behavior. God’s grace is covering & blessing you ALL!

  5. Ron Richey says:

I don’t remember exactly what comment it was, but in CNN’s post analysis, one of the commentators wondered out loud about how Romney could have done so well. I turned to my wife and said, “It was the power of fasting and prayer”.

We along with tens and perhaps hundreds of thousands, contributed our fasting and prayer to the cause this past Sunday. Our collective supplications to The Most High were indeed answered in SPECTACULAR fashion!

  6. AfricanforRomney says:

The media empty skirts were almost crying to his Chicago thugs demanding an answer for his shitty performance. I was laughing my ass off listening to them. I’ll give them another day until they blame t-party. LOL! Obama’s Titanic ship with media boarding pass suddenly stopped in the middle of the ocean with no warning. hehehehehe

Gov Romney was simply the BEST!!

  7. James Taylor says:

I can hear Jim Lehrer repeating to himself under his breath…..”20 miles out to sea and we hit a STUMP!!!!” Way to go Mit!! Shut the man DOWN!!!

  8. Roy says:

How about a little analysis regarding Myth’s words. While you were all patting yourselves on the back, the fact checkers are having a field day exposing all of Myth’s many lies. In fact, it’s hard to find many of his utterances with any element of truth. Does truth matter? What should we make of a man who seems to have disregard for the truth?
I know that African doesn’t as he/she’s previously weighed in on this. Do we really want a liar to be the leader of our nation? Or is this just rah, rah stuff where integrity is totally meaningless? What do you tell your kids? Really??

  9. Cathy says:

Hello Roy, I’m sure you’re speaking of Obama lies in your post. The only “Myth” is the one in your own head.

Mitt speaks the truth…listen and learn.

  10. Roy says:

Cathy, Did you too pray for Romney? I prayed for him and for President Obama to have an honest discussions of the issues facing our country. I believe in the 10 Commandments. As you may know one of the Commandments is ” Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness.”
Apparently Mr. Romney does not believe in this Commandment. Did you really listen to what Mr. Romney said last night??? He walked completely away from many of the positions he has been espousing since he started the campaign and away from many of the positions still posted on his own website. I guess this is another of those etch a sketch moments.
Do you truly condone lying? Is this election that important to you? Are you willing to sell your soul for this election. Apparently Mr. Romney is.
Don’t believe this??? Go to any fact check web site. ( What’s your favorite? Can’t wait to go and check it out for myself.) If you don’t care to invest a few minutes to get past the spin and learn the truth, I feel very badly for you. Did President Obama tell 100% truth last night. No, he had some moments which were less than wholly truthful. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find any statement which Mr. Romney made last night which is wholly truthful.
Again I ask you, does truth matter. If so, prove it.
    I await your response.

  11. 4theRepublic says:

@Roy–uh, just what are all of these lies Gov Romney stated? You really need to be very specific if you’re going to even come close to making a plausible argument. You have offered no information other than the usual ad-hom attacks which have been spouted for the past 6 months.

  12. Cathy says:

I don’t respond to misguided souls. Yes, prayer might help you to see the light and the truth. Be blessed my man.

  13. Roy says:

    4th Republic,
Are you and Cathy really that dim? Won’t you take a moment away from Fox News to look for the truth. Victor was running such a nice website here but now it’s being taken over by folks like you. This is supposed to convince anyone who happens to come along that Mr. Romney and his supports are anything other than a bunch of juveniles who spent their time with the types of comments they write. How about some intelligent conversation. Victor, please get these people under control. I thought this would be a good site to discuss issue but it’s turned into junior high school foolishness. Can someone discuss an issue????

  14. Victor Lundquist says:

Roy: It is called whining. Whining is very unbecoming a man.

    Check this:
    http://www.wnd.com/2012/10/romney-best-debate-performance-in-52-years/

To your last point: Mr. Obama could not answer any questions last night without falling back into his MSM memes. Stumbling along was completely listless and if he is the all confident, wonderful leader of the free world, why could he not look Mr. Romney in the eye?

Last night appeared as if Mitt Romney was the President of the United States while Mr. Obama was the manager of a banana republic.

I realize you cannot answer this simple question: Why could Obama not look Romney in the eye last night while showing weakness and meekness? Why? Because he had no answers to support his sorry record of failure and driving good people out of work.

And yes, it is 23 million. Unless you prefer not to count all of the people that gave up looking for a job altogether. If so, the number is less. Mitt Romney and I consider those people important too. They want to work as much as I do; they just became too discouraged and they gave up.

I recommend you head back over the ditch to MoveOn.org

  15. Victor Lundquist says:

Roy: I cannot wait until the debate next week when Ryan mops the floor with your Mr. Exaggerbiden when he starts to cry.

Most of all, I cannot wait to see Mr. Obama in two weeks and watch him cower again. Obama will come out punching and swinging into the air. Mark my words!

  16. Roy says:

    Victor,
You are becoming like the rest of these partisan hacks. Is that what you want your site to turn into? Just a forum for head nodders who spend all of their time blowing smoke up each other’s butts? I see no intelligent discussion here. Just a lot of people setting themselves up for a huge disappointment. Why can’t even ONE person here address the issue of fact checking. Apparently they won’t go there as they are afraid it might take some of the luster off Mr. Romney. He’s still way behind and these lies are nothing than desperate attempts to salvage some ray of hope- hoping that enough people in this country are unable to see or to seek the truth. That’s what your site is turning into. How are you going to feel on 11/7?
Let’s have at least one intelligent person step up to the plate to show the others that an intelligent argument can be made for Mr. Romney. Is he proud of what this site is becoming??? This is how he wants his campaign and legacy to be remembered??
Victor, are your proud that you are the leader of this band of people afraid of a FACT (TRUTH) or do you want to be someone who led an honest discussion of the issues and didn’t resort to name calling for being unable to make a cogent argument. Let’s turn it around and have some pride in your ability to lead an intelligent discussion. I’m praying for you, Victor.

  17. Jean D. says:

People may not believe what happened last night and spin Pres. Obama’s poor performance to a altitude or a sound boom that distracted him, but the truth is God answers prayers and fastings that were quietly but passionately offered in behalf of our an honest and faithful man.

  18. Jean D. says:

You don’t have to be a democrat or a republican to know in your heart who told the truth during the debate. Mitt Romney spoke with passion and facts. Because truth was exposed, those who don’t want to accept truth are crying ‘foul.’ Losers!!!!

  19. AfricanforRomney says:

    Roy,
We know it hurt to stand in the loser side. Just wait! we’ve two more Presidential victory debate to go and one for VP. I wish it is today. For many of us, Gov Romney’s superb performance was very familiar. What you get from Gov Romeny is always SUBSTANCE. Pay attention to him and you’ll learn the truth.

    Obama EXPOSED!

  20. Victor Lundquist says:

Roy, you completely avoid the obvious. Your man will not answer questions. Playing T-Ball with Letterman and THE VIEW as “eye candy” is a little different than facing truth to fact and looking a man eye-to-eye as an equal.

Please stop you patronizing and come back when you have something positive to say about your man. He has never been a leader his entire life. He has not led these past 45 months and he wants to takes us further down the same dismal path.

Mr. Obama is a little man in character by comparison to Romney. He does not even compare. Their reputations are worlds apart as regards accomplishments. Obama is the welfare king and bragging in the past about getting more people on food stamps as he leads more people off the cliff into discouragement. The more he can take that way, the faster he can lower the unemployment rate because they drop off radar. Nice.

Come back when Mr. Obama can look Mr. Romney in the eye. There is no need to receive further patronizing from the likes of you when you cannot even support a person that cannot even meet with Congress. He is a weak, feeble man.

  21. AfricanforRomney says:

    Roy,
Here’s the latest Obama’s job #s on tonight report “the jobless rate, from 8.1 percent in August to 8.2 percent.” His failed record reflects on the jobless rate, clearly. What else do you want to see as evidence? This Prez is not capable handling this economy. He’s a spectacular failure!

  22. AfricanforRomney says:

    Roy,
wait a sec. i’m smelling something fishy here. Are you “Judith” signed up as “Roy”? Why your comments are soooooooo familiar that i had conversation with “Judith” about “fact” check orgs. Can fact check org detect you’re roy or judith? what the heck, i’ll go and find out.hehehe

Listen, Juidth i mean Roy, this website is not wapo, nytimes editorials. Why should i give a damn for you or any other Odummer supporter feelings? Libs are always about feelings. This’s important election we don’t have time what you’re felling. Okay?

You and I can’t even come to an agreement the simple FACT who won the debate. As i said i heard it on the radio the fact ck org claims for both candidates. Actually they were labeling it as “half truth”. What the f.. is half truth? you know the reason b/c it didn’t fit their narratives.

One thing you didn’t answer for me. Obama even open the debate with a LIE. Obama’s opening statement his anniversary “20 years ago comment about his wife” was a LIE. It was not “half truth”, it was 100% a LIE. If you find from the debate incorrect statements, the Blame-in chief was there standing @ the debate. How come he didn’t challenge gov Romney? B/c he knows gov Romney is telling the truth.
The bottom line is Obama doesn’t understand the economy. He’s destroying it. The jobless rate reflects his performance.
    Gov Romney=Integerity=Authentic Leadership!

  23. Roy says:

Victor, Why can’t you or your followers answer ONE simple question? Is this what the Romney team has become, sniveling cowards who only have insults to bring to the table? Does Mr. Romney condone this type of juvenile behavior?
Let’s have a line by line analysis of the debate, with fact checks to back up your argument. I know that not ONE of you will take me up on this as you would lose and have to admit that Myth is far less than truthful. His debate answers are already coming back to haunt him. How many times can he try to etch a sketch his way thru this? Has he no concern for how the historians are going to view the way he has run his campaign when they write about his campaign. McCain was fully aware of how history would judge his conduct during the campaign and he ran a very honorable campaign.
Despite all of the bluster I read here, Romney is FAR behind by any objective measure. Perhaps we should turn this discussion to a state by state analysis. I would be most interested to see how you think Romney can get to 270 electoral votes. Intrade is taking bets that Obama will get more than 320 electoral votes. Good chance to make some money for any of you with guts. Show me your Intrade receipt!

  24. Cathy says:

Sorry Roy, debating a relentless liberal is like getting a root canal without novocain…no takers here, we value our sanity.

  25. Adam says:

    Cathy,
Been watching your posts. Sorry to see that you don’t have much to offer other than insults. What IS it about facts that bother you so? Why don’t you make a list of three facts which Romney said the other night that can be fact checked and then a serious discussion can begin. I’m waiting!

  26. Adam says:

    Cathy,
Still waiting! Ok, I’ll make this easy. You give me ONE fact from Wednesday and we’ll address that. Can you do that or would you prefer just to make another childish, snarky remark?

  27. Roy says:

    Cathy,
Are you out there? Still looking for ONE Romney fact? Still waiting!!!

  28. Roy says:

Either Cathy is still out there looking for ONE fact or she couldn’t find one and has given up. Predictable. Asking some of these people for a fact shuts them down in a heartbeat. Too bad they have nothing factual to add to the discussion.
Cathy, I’m disappointed but not surprised.

  29. Annette S says:

    Roy & Adam….

On another thread you made the claim that the 23 million number for people looking for work or under employed was an exaggeration. This figure was put out by the US Dept. of Labor. So that is a pretty weak argument. In fact the number went up to 23.2 million. Please understand some of these people who are under employed are still looking. The 23.2 number doesn’t account for the 3 to 4 million people put on social security disability insurance since Obama took office. 3 to 4 million people who used to hold regular jobs.

Obama cut $716 in Medicare and I covered that argument in another thread, but both of you ignored it. Instead of a counter argument you went back to calling Romney a liar. You complain about posters not engaging you in a civil debate, but you ignored my argument which was substantiated with facts.

Here is a question for both of you…how is Obama going to cut spending besides raising taxes on the so called rich which is not only an oppressive redistribution policy, but it won’t work. It will pay for about 11 days of government spending.

So how is Obama going to CUT spending besides taxing the so called rich?
