New Romney Op-Ed: Culture Does Matter

Gov. Romney just penned an op-ed in National Review this evening, titled “Culture Does Matter,” reflecting on his comments on culture in Israel this weekend.

During my recent trip to Israel, I had suggested that the choices a society makes about its culture play a role in creating prosperity, and that the significant disparity between Israeli and Palestinian living standards was powerfully influenced by it. In some quarters, that comment became the subject of controversy.

But what exactly accounts for prosperity if not culture? In the case of the United States, it is a particular kind of culture that has made us the greatest economic power in the history of the earth. Many significant features come to mind: our work ethic, our appreciation for education, our willingness to take risks, our commitment to honor and oath, our family orientation, our devotion to a purpose greater than ourselves, our patriotism. But one feature of our culture that propels the American economy stands out above all others: freedom. The American economy is fueled by freedom. Free people and their free enterprises are what drive our economic vitality.

The Founding Fathers wrote that we are endowed by our Creator with the freedom to pursue happiness. In the America they designed, we would have economic freedom, just as we would have political and religious freedom. Here, we would not be limited by the circumstance of birth nor directed by the supposedly informed hand of government. We would be free to pursue happiness as we wish. Economic freedom is the only force that has consistently succeeded in lifting people out of poverty. It is the only principle that has ever created sustained prosperity. It is why our economy rose to rival those of the world’s leading powers — and has long since surpassed them all.

    Luke, a GREAT post!

I am so glad Governor Romney wrote this piece. OUTSTANDING!

I read the whole article with National Review. His specific examples of cultural influences to prosperity are spot on…… With freedom paramount.

Conspicuous is his description of Israel’s prosperity with no mention of the Palistinian utter lack of economic freedom.

    Thanks Luke.

My issue was with him saying the Founding Fathers said we would not be “limited by circumstance of birth.” The early residents of the U.S. were most definitely limited by circumstances of birth. If you were not a White, Male, Landowner, you could not vote.

I believe that culture most definitely matters in prosperity. But so does the circumstances you are born into.

Brilliant Op-ed! The lefty media and libs are twisiting his comment b/c the speech didn’t come out from King Obama’s mouth. They’re not stupid, they know damn well what he meant. Obama camps are just want to crucify Gov Romney b/c his success in his foreign trip.

The great civilization born in Africa (of course, i’m bias. Look the mind of Egypt’s pyramid ) and Persian then, middle east in science and math. where are they now? Culture is a big factor for civilaization collapse.

    Culture matters!

I am pleased with Governors Romney’s comments about culture. Many parts of the world are oppressed due to the culture they practice. Culture does matter and I am glad that Governor Romney has the courage to speak the truth. I hope he will continue to speak the truth and create awareness.

The media has really lost it.

This piece by Governor Romney is very very inspiring. It is why we defend our country so fiercely and why so many people want to penetrate our borders. We need to let the world know where we stand philosophically.

The belief that at the core of every individual is the desire to be free is part of the Republican philosophy. Economic freedom and other freedoms create an environment that releases creativity, motivation and passion from individuals. Republicans celebrate individual success and believe that any country in the world can experience the same success.

Oddly, however, many on the left do not believe this. They believe that just because it is a culture that we like does not mean it is for everyone. We like it, but it may not be for every country. But Republicans believe that every individual has a desire for freedom and that they can control their own environment.

Romney says that people should not be directed by the supposedly informed hand of government. This the Obama style of government. He does not want to celebrate individual success. Obama wants to control entrepreneurs and minimize them . Obama wants to tell us what is fair and what is not. Government knows better according to Obama and many on the left. He is bad for our country and sends the wrong message to the rest of the world. We need Romney who truly wants the poor and middle class to succeed and contribute to prosperity. Romney 2012!!

    Freedom lover,
I’m not sure why you’ve an issue b/c “the Founding Fathers said we would not be limited by circumstance of birth.” The “American dream”, opportunites are there for millions of people who are not born in US land, but chose to reside here. I beleive iIf you work hard, get education, do the best you can in life, a little luck may be your success won’t be limited by circumstance of birth. Of course, society, the govt system can create obstacles for one not achieve that dream, but it is available for anyone in this country.
