Jewish communities worldwide will mark the beginning of Hanukkah (also known as Chanukah), and the ‘Festival of Lights’ at sunset tonight, Tuesday December 20, 2011. It is an observance that commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greek army in 165 BC and the Jewish people’s struggle for religious freedom.
From Governor and Mrs. Mitt Romney:
Tonight, as Hanukkah begins, Ann and I extend our best wishes to all our Jewish friends celebrating the Festival of Lights.
Ablaze on evening’s forehead o’er the earth,
And add each night a lustre till afar
An eightfold splendor shine above thy hearth.
