Romney to Deliver Major Health Care Address Thursday (5/12/11)

University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center - Site where Mitt Romney will deliver a major health care speech on May 12, 2011.

Although Governor Romney has commented many times on the private-market health insurance program in Massachusetts how many times do we still hear the following?

“If Romney’s gonna stand a chance at being President, he’s gonna have to explain RomneyCare.”

That’s exactly what he’s going to do.

In a BIG way.

On Thursday (May 12, 2011) Romney will deliver a MAJOR health care address at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center at 2:00 PM ET in Ann Arbor. It’s being discussed as a PowerPoint palooza where he will lay out the nuts and bolts of his plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Associated Press

Romney’s presidential exploratory committee on Tuesday announced the former Massachusetts governor would deliver a speech on Thursday at the University of Michigan. The speech is designed to explain how, as president, he would repeal President Barack Obama’s national health care overhaul that is similar to an effort Romney helped implement in Massachusetts.

Aides say Romney will outline a health overhaul that would give states the responsibility to take care of the poor, uninsured and ill. He is also going to offer a plan that would give patients a tax deduction if they buy their own health insurance.

Romney’s PAC has released an outline

Mitt Romney’s 2012 Principles for Healthcare Reform:
• Restore to the states the responsibility and resources to care for their poor, uninsured, and chronically ill.

• Give a tax deduction to those who buy their own health insurance, just like those who buy it through their employers.

• Streamline the federal regulation of healthcare.

Reduce the influence of lawsuits on medical practice and costs.

Make healthcare more like a consumer market and less like a government program.

(my emphasis)

A Romney critic calls it a smart move:

By putting out a detailed plan well before any of his opponents, Romney has his best chance to move the conversation from the past to the future.

If Livefeed is available or C-Span plans to air the speech, we’ll post details here as soon as they are available. Check back!

This is a biggy!

great article jayde! i hope we can watch it! i hope that the media does not give another candidate credit when they steal mitt’s ideas!

  2. Noelle says:

This is huge. I can’t wait. This should kick of the primary campaign for sure. Looking forward to reading the details of Mitt’s plan.

  3. Mittster says:

    This is awesome! Go Mitt!

  4. Dan Dubrule says:

Good job! The truth will set you (us) free!

  5. ccr says:

Hope he is succinct and can nail it! Would love to see him “nail” the truth about Obama care and distinctly show how they differ. Great article on American Thinker about the bill we HAVE to get repealed :

……….and then………..we’ve got to take our country back from those who want to “fundamentally transform” our country!

  6. Stan says:

This is great, I’ve waited for this moment.

  7. Keith says:

You need to ensure that it is aired. That it is on all social networks. And that the message gets to those most in need of Healthcare.

I will be thrilled to hear Governor Romney take the opportunity to define himself and not let others define who he is and what his REAL record is.

The DNC political strategists and the liberal media are doing all they can to define him to Conservatives before he comes out the gate. They are attacking all their perceived threats and giving extra airtime to those they see as proven (beatable) quantities.

That said, we need to maximize his exposure in all venues. Please contact us locally as individuals if you want us to engage that process.

This is a key moment that the liberals are already preparing to rebutt. That said, it is not far fetched to warn the public what it is that they can expect from the opposition so that they can recognize it when they see it. Please hear me when I say that!!

Define them for what they really are – don’t let them define you/us!! There are NO gloves this time around…

  8. Keith says:

Good luck, Governor Romney and Mitt folk everywhere. Appreciate your efforts immensely. We are pulling for you as our ideal and will rally behind you or the conservative that surfaces as the frontrunner.
Objectively – we will not be voting for Obama or any liberal, socialist, democrat or rino. Given the last election cycle we simply cannot afford to compromise our Constitution and our economy anymore. The penalty for failure here is much too great.
Please know we are standing next to you.

    God Bless.

  9. Evelio Perez says:

I am excited but at the same time a little worried of how this HealthCare address is going to turn out, We need a Homerun!!!!!!

  10. “This better be good.” Actually, it needs to set in motion a reassessment of what MA has; what it doesn’t have; who did what; what other states have; the evolution of healthcare and insurance in other states (compared to MA), etc.

    Go Mitt, Go!

  11. Also, look for lots of astroturfing of “he didn’t make a convincing speech; Mitt is toast”–it’s inevitable; and not just from ;-)

  12. It occurs to me the timing of this is pretty good for another reason: Newt Gingrich is set to announce his own presidential bid this week. If Mitt can steal the spotlight from the former Speaker, then it’ll be just a little embarrassing for Gingrich and company.

  13. Melinda says:

This is great! Mitt is being blamed for a similar program to Obamacare — anyone
who read about it knows that it wasn’t! Plus, his plan was socialized when he
left office. This will clera the slate with a new start! Let me post this question:

Can anyone even imagine Governor Romney, the ultimate entrepreneur/capitalist … putting in a horrifying takeover of the government like Obamacare.

When you think about it — it’s truly a laugh!

  14. Melinda says:

Mitt is the only candidate who can beat democrats! Everyone should read his
book “No Apologies.” He understands the “macro” world and can be done to reverse this sinking ship. We need a profound honorable leader with the ability to turn around a failing
    situation into a major success!

  15. Mark says:

Awesome, looking forward to this speech!
